  • Patent number: 5184852
Abstract: A rod casing for activating vertically arranged latch bolts, the casing and latch bolts arranged in an active stile of a door and engageable to a door frame. The rod casing provides a vertically slidable actuator cam engageable by both a lock/unlock actuator and a delatch or dogging actuator. The lock/unlock actuator and the delatch actuator are rotatably mounted upon a spindle piece which itself is rotatable by a user such as by a key-activated lock cylinder. The lock/unlock actuator when rotated slidingly abuts the actuator cam and drives the actuator cam vertically upward to cause unlatching of the latch bolts. The delatch actuator, upon rotation of the spindle piece in an opposite direction underlies the actuator cam and dogs the actuator cam in its vertically risen position. To deactivate the delatch actuator, the lock/unlock actuator can be rotated to interfere and displace the delatch actuator to release the actuator cam from the dogging position.

  • Patent number: 5184853
Abstract: A door lock mechanism that allows either tool operable locking or padlocking of a handle and escutcheon assembly. The lock includes a tool operable insert inset in the lock base and adapted to receive any one of number of standard tools. Such tools are used in industry to restrict access to specific groups of craft persons. For applications desiring padlock capability, the tool operable access can be disabled. A pawl coupled to the tool operable insert, is operable between first and second positions. When the pawl is biassed toward the first position, corresponding to the locked state, it will engage the latch, thereby effecting locking, whenever the latch is brought to the latched position, by turning the handle to a vertical position, and the use of the tool operable insert is enabled for disengaging the pawl from the latch and the pawl. When the pawl is biassed toward the second position the pawl is prevented from engaging the latch, thus disabling the tool operable lock to provide for padlocking.

  • Patent number: 5183302
Abstract: A handle housing intended for attachment on a vehicle door panel is of injection molded plastic construction and has a base adapted to engage against the surface of the door panel. The housing carries at least one anchor leg, and preferably several, which project from the base and extend through registering apertures provided in the panel. Each of these anchor legs has a foot at the end thereof which is adapted to engage and underlie the underside of the panel when the housing is slid longitudinally along the surface so that the foot will engage with the underside of the housing and thereby prevent the housing from being pulled away from the panel. The housing also has a plurality of locking legs projecting from the base and extending through registering openings in the panel.

  • Patent number: 5183300
Abstract: A fastening arrangement for a movable part especially a folding top or a roof of a motor vehicle. The arrangement includes a rotary latch which serves for securing a fastening pin of the movable part and is rotatable by means of an actuating device for a blocking and release of the fastening pin which can be retained by means of a detent pawl. In the locked position of the fastening, the detent pawl rests in an undercut principal notch of the rotary latch. High frictional forces and disturbing noises therefore are avoided during the unlocking operation. The rotary latch is rotatable through a specific angle oppositely to the blocking direction of the detent pawl by means of a control device activatable by the actuating device.

  • Patent number: 5183301
Abstract: A security seal has an elongated flexible strap integral with a housing at one end. The other end of the strap can be moved through a passageway in the housing to form the strap into a closed loop. Facilities in the housing and on one surface of the strap permit movement of the strap out of the passageway and prevent reverse movement of the strap if the strap is properly inserted without a half-twist and into the proper end of the passageway. These facilities are ineffective to prevent reverse movement if the strap is improperly inserted. The seal is improved by forming a groove longitudinally in the passageway. A surface feature on the other surface of the strap is conformally received in the groove when the strap is properly inserted into the passageway without twisting. If the strap is improperly inserted, the passageway interferes with and applies force to the surface feature. This force discolors or deforms the surface feature to provide a visual indication of improper insertion.

  • Patent number: 5180199
Abstract: A flap door for closing a hatch through a floor separating an upper and lower deck, e.g. in an aircraft, is equipped with a locking and unlocking mechanism in which a locking roller can be moved out of a locking position prior to any force applied to the door in an upward opening direction. For this purpose a bearing block is secured to the body of the flap door and a bell crank lever is journalled in the mounting block. One lever arm of the bell crank lever is constructed as a handle, while the other substantially shorter arm of the bell crank lever carries at its free end the locking roller. In its locking position the locking roller engages a spring biased locking claw. When the flap door is to be opened, the initial angular movement of the handle lever caused the roller to first disengage from the claw and then roll along a guide rail. When the unlocking is completed, the handle lever is in a substantially vertical position enabling the operator to apply an upwardly directed force to the flap door.

  • Patent number: 5180200
Abstract: An improved security seal includes a plastic housing with a chamber open at one end and a plastic rotor which is insertable in the chamber. The housing wall contains bores aligned across the chamber and two annular grooves adjacent the chamber entrance. Tabs are formed adjacent the chamber entrance. The rotor has a bore and two annular ridges near its top. The ridges are relieved complementarily to the tabs. The rotor may be partially inserted in the housing by snapping the lower ridge into the upper groove and locating the tabs in the relieved areas to align all of the bores so that a seal wire may thereafter be inserted through the seal. The ridge-groove and tab-relief cooperation prevent inadvertent relative rotation of the rotor and housing and full insertion of the rotor. With a seal wire inserted, the rotor and housing are relatively rotated to wrap the wire about the rotor. The rotor is then fully inserted into the housing so each ridge snaps into one groove.

  • Patent number: 5176417
Abstract: A tilt cab latch has a piston which is biased to cam on a rotor to capture and exert a preload force on a pin. The end of the piston is formed by cylindrical and conical surfaces which match respective internal cylindrical and angled cylindrical surfaces on the rotor. The conical and angled cylindrical surfaces cam on one another to exert the preload force on the pin, and the cylindrical surfaces provide positive locking against retrograde rotation of the rotor.

  • Patent number: 5174141
Abstract: In a cylinder lock, half tumblers are slidably arranged in pairs in the tumbler inserting holes formed in the key rotor in such a manner that, when the key is not inserted into the lock, the half tumblers are elastically urged in one direction to cause their engaging end portions to engage with the locking engagement grooves formed in the cylinder body to inhibit the rotation of the key rotor. When the key is inserted into the lock, the key engaging portions of the half tumblers engage the key crests to move the half tumblers to disengage their engaging end portions from the locking engagement grooves. When, instead of the key, a picking tool is used to disengage one of each pair of half tumblers from the locking engagement groove to thereby allow the key rotor to turn through a predetermined angle, the other half tumbler is engaged with the locking engagement groove deeper than usual, and the protruded portion of the key rotor covers the key engaging portion, thereby preventing the picking of the lock.

  • Patent number: 5171048
Abstract: A door lock assembly includes a housing-carried set of interactive operating components for mounting on a closure for releasingly engaging a keeper that is carried by structure located adjacent to an opening through which access is controlled by positioning the closure selectively in open and closed positions. The lock assembly is "slam-capable" in that its operating components include a pair of oppositely pivoted, spring-biased jaws that are movable into latching engagement with the keeper as the closure is closed. The lock housing includes a pair of interfitting, cast metal housing members that cooperate to define a housing assembly that has a keeper-receiving formation along a curved end region thereof. Channel-like central formations are defined on the hollow interior of the housing assembly for mounting operating components that include a pair of opposed jaw members that function to latchingly interengage portions of the keeper when the closure is in its closed position.
