  • Patent number: 5178041
Abstract: A control system for controlling both a lean combustion engine equipped with a swirl control valve and an automatic transmission. The control system includes a shift detector for detecting that a shift is being executed in the automatic transmission and a valve control inhibitor for inhibiting the switching the ON/OFF state of the swirl control valve in the course of the shift in the automatic transmission. A shift inhibitor inhibits the shift for a constant time period in case the ON/OFF state of the swirl control valve is switched. A regulation level changer changes the regulation level of the oil pressure of the automatic transmission in accordance with the ON/OFF state of the swirl control valve.

  • Patent number: 5176037
Abstract: An actuator suitable for use with a valve has a design allowing for easy control or adjustment of the force applied to the valve. The actuator motor has a cam which operates a follower surface of a spring-loaded arm mounted for rotation on a carriage. The carriage is mounted for linear motion and connected to the control element of the valve. The actuation force can be controlled or adjusted by changing the relative positions of the arm's center of rotation, the point on the arm at which the spring applies force, and the position of the cam. In a preferred embodiment, the position of the arm's center of rotation is changed by moving a pin from one set of holes in the carriage and the arm to a second set of holes in the carriage and the arm.

  • Patent number: 5174424
Abstract: The invention is an apparatus for producing clutching and de-clutching particularly adaptable for use in a tapping attachment for threading holes. The clutching apparatus includes clutching members driven by the driver or driving machine and clutching members carried by the driven part. An intermediate member is provided which provides for clutching engagement and de-clutching between the members on the driving part and the members on the driven part. The clutching apparatus has the capability of producing de-clutching in response to excessive torque applied to the apparatus, and also, it has the capability of producing de-clutching in response to the tap having reached a predetermined depth and the hole being tapped. The apparatus can be built into a tapping attachment or into a tap holding adapter having the capability of quick change release, and also, the mechanism can be built directly into the driving apparatus.

  • Patent number: 5174426
Abstract: A clutch wheel for a plate type friction clutch comprises a clutch disc carrying a plurality of friction pads spaced coaxially around it. Each friction pad consists of two pad elements arranged back to back and movable axially with respect to each other against the action of a Belleville ring inserted between them. This axial movement is controlled within predetermined limits by abutment means consisting of cooperating elements of the two friction pads, or of at least one of the friction pads and the clutch disc. The Belleville ring is precompressed in such a way that, within the limits of the axial movement defined by the abutment means, it works only on a part of its characteristic curve in which the reaction force which it exerts is substantially constant.

  • Patent number: 5172576
Abstract: An anti-theft steering shaft lock on an automotive steering column including a first clutch element on a rotatable steering shaft and a second clutch element on a stationary part of the steering column. The first clutch element has notches accessible in the direction of the centerline of the steering shaft and the second clutch element has axial lugs for engagement in the notches. The second clutch element is mounted on the stationary part of the steering column for bodily movement in the direction of the centerline of the steering shaft between locked and unlocked positions relative to the first clutch element. An annular control element is rotatably supported on the stationary part of the steering column around the second clutch element and has a circumferential cam slot which receives a radial lug on the second clutch element such that rotation of the control element effects bodily shiftable movement of the second clutch element between its locked and unlocked positions.

  • Patent number: 5172611
Abstract: An engine-rpm-dependent arrest device to prevent non-permitted down shifts in motor vehicle transmissions containing a pilot valve (1) and a control valve (2), both having two shift positions. One shift position of the control valve (2) is engaged by the pressure acting upon a piston surface (36) of the control-valve piston (31) and exceeding a given value of an engine-rpm-dependent low-pressure pump (20). The control valve (2) is exclusively in contact with the pressure medium conveyed by the low-pressure pump (20) and controls the large end surface (40) and the annular surface (41) of a pilot-valve piston (38) designed as stepped piston. If when the high gear is engaged and the engine rpm is above a certain limit value, the gear-shift valve (7) is moved to its position for low gear, then an actuation of the actuation device (15) for the low gear is prevented via the pilot valve (1).

  • Patent number: 5170868
Abstract: A method of controlling a friction type clutch of a vehicle having an engine and a drive train, which clutch is operated by hydraulic oil and is frictionally engageable to transfer rotational driving force from an output shaft of the engine to the drive train, includes the steps of causing the clutch to assume a slipping state of engagement upon starting of the vehicle, and defining a first amount of time as a function of the temperature of the hydrauilc oil. When the first amount of time has elapsed since the starting of the vehicle, the clutch is positively urged from slipping state of engagement into a locked up state of engagement.

  • Patent number: 5170872
Abstract: The outputs (17-18) of a pair of intermittence devices (16) operated in phase with a clutch driving shaft (6), clutch however, generate equal movements, however in a 180.degree. out-of-phase relation with each other. With the interposition of respective electromagnetic friction clutches (27-28), these outputs are connected to the driven disc of the clutch. The two clutch discs are normally interconnected by at least one respective dog (9-10). A control logic (22) connected to a generator of clock signals (K1-K2) in phase with the uniform motion and rest times of the outputs from the intermittence devices, commands the clutch to be opened and closed, when the friction clutch at the selected output is closed, and when the said output travels at the same speed as the input into the intermittence devices.

  • Patent number: 5168777
Abstract: The rotational speed of an engine Ne and a drum rotational speed Nt of a clutch Cl are compared against each other to determine a power on/off. For a 2.fwdarw.3 and a 2.fwdarw.4 shift in the power off condition, a timing solenoid SL5 is turned on (duty cycle of 100%) to accelerate the termination of a preceding speed range, thus increasing a time delay between such termination and the activation of a new speed range to be established. For other shifts, a time difference between the termination of a preceding speed range and the activation of a new speed range to be established is adjusted, by energizing the solenoid SL5 in accordance with the throttle opening .theta. and the vehicle speed No such that SL5 is energized with a high duty cycle for a longer .theta. and with a low duty cycle for a smaller .theta..

  • Patent number: 5168973
Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus for controlling a hydraulic pressure usable for a clutch wherein the appratus is employed for a transmission mounted on a construction machine or the like in such a manner that it is provided separately for a plurality of clutches 1 and it is controlled individually. The apparatus includes a first valve 3 for allowing a large amount of hydraulic oil to flow in the clutch and a second valve 4 for electronically controlling a clutch pressure so that the termination of filling and the clutch pressure are detected by a simple structural arrangement on the basis of a displacement of a spool 21 for the first valve 3 and a separately disposed piston. In addition, appearing of an overshoot pressure on the termination of filling is prevented by providing a difference in pressue receiving areas on the spool 21 for the first valve.
