  • Patent number: 5162026
Abstract: A front axle drive assembly is disclosed which requires less lateral distance than known prior art assemblies. The drive is preferably for use in four wheel drive vehicles having an offset differential case. In such systems, the differential case is offset toward one side from the vehicle center line to accommodate the engine at the center line. An axle half on the offset side thus has reduced lateral space. The invention includes the use of a planetary system, requiring relatively little lateral space to split torque toward the two front wheels, thus providing additional lateral space for the axle half on the offset side. A constant velocity universal joint mounted between the planetary drive and the offset side axle half is received within the differential case. The lateral space savings resulting from the use of the planetary system allows the offset side axle half to be longer, providing benefits to the vehicle suspension system.

  • Patent number: 5161658
Abstract: A novel viscous coupling for transmitting rotary torque via a viscous fluid has first and second torque transmission members, a working chamber hermetically packed with a viscous fluid, and first and second plates alternately disposed in the working chamber. The transmission of rotary torque between the first and second transmission members is carried out via viscous resistance of the viscous fluid between the first and second plates. The aforesaid viscous coupling is characterized by providing with a multi-plate clutch to adjust transmission power of the rotary torque between at least one of the plates and the torque transmission members. The coupling includes an externally operable engaging means for fastening the multi-plate clutch by pressing clutch plates of the multi-plate clutch. Also, the coupling has passages for leading the viscous fluid to contact portions between the clutch plates and the plates.

  • Patent number: 5160006
Abstract: The present invention provides an adjustable and automatically disengaging overload clutch for driving a tool, comprising a first clutch half frictionally engaged with a second clutch half and a coupler bracket for transmitting torque from the second clutch half to the tool. The clutch further comprises a spring connecting the second clutch half to the coupler bracket to transmit torque from the second clutch half to the coupler bracket. The spring is designed so that if a predetermined torque is exceeded, the second clutch half is released from the coupler bracket, thus preventing the transmission of any further torque. Levers associated with the coupler bracket and the second clutch half are also provided for disengaging the second clutch half from the first clutch half.

  • Patent number: 5159846
Abstract: An apparatus for rotatably moving and positioning an indexing table is disclosed. The apparatus of the present invention allows an indexing table to be quickly rotated between a plurality of index positions to within an accuracy of less than 0.001 inches on a repeated basis. Further, the apparatus has no looseness or physical separation between motion transmission elements while at or near each index position that would otherwise allow for externally induced movement of the indexing table. While at or near each index position, a first side of the cogs of a first planetary gear is kept in continual contact with the first side of the cogs of a main gear, and the second side of the cogs of a second gear is kept in continual contact with the second side of the cogs of a main gear.
