  • Patent number: 5381325
Abstract: A self-positioning light fixture with a stabilizing base comprises a self-righting member in the shape of a spherical segment and a separate lamp supporting member with connecting means to join the two together and to separate each from the other. When separated, a filling neck or spout on the top wall of the self-righting member is exposed through which fluid ballast material such as sand may be poured into the cavity of the self-righting member. The filling neck has external threads to engage the internal threads of a recess opening to the bottom wall of the lamp supporting member when received therein to thereby couple the two members together. Additional fastening screws are provided to more securely connect the self-righting member to the lamp supporting member. A shock absorbing mechanism is provided comprising mounting springs to secure the lamp bulb socket member to the lamp supporting member and thereby protect it from shocks transmitted to the lamp fixture.

  • Patent number: 5381322
Abstract: A floodlight knuckle or pivot joint has a ballast incorporated into it, rather than into the housing or hood of the fixture that holds the reflector and lamp. Preferably, the ballast is incorporated into its own waterproof housing in the lower portion of a vertically oriented knuckle, below the bottom-most of the two flanges of the knuckle, i.e. so that the pivot flanges are disposed between the ballast-containing portion of the knuckle and the fixture hood. Alternatively, the ballast might be contained in the top channel of the knuckle (between the top flange and the fixture hood), or, perhaps, in an enlargement of one of the flanges.

  • Patent number: 5381320
Abstract: A light fixture includes a housing having a top wall and a front wall. An upright lip on the housing projects up above the top wall generally adjacent the front wall. Fasteners mount at least one lamp on the housing forward of the front wall. A light diffuser is further provided including a hollow shell having a back with an opening therein to permit entry of the lamp and the housing lip into the shell as the diffuser is installed on the housing. When the diffuser is installed on the housing, the lip extends up on the inside of the shell closely adjacent an interior surface of the shell above the opening. The lip and interior surface of the shell are engagable to hold the diffuser on the housing, without the need for mechanical fasteners, in a position in which the diffuser shell is suspended on the housing with the back of the diffuser shell in close, generally abutting relation with the front wall of the housing.

  • Patent number: 5373426
Abstract: A vehicle brake light signal for alerting pedestrians or other vehicle drivers positioned in front of a vehicle to a deceleration of the associated vehicle. The device includes signal assembly which may be secured to a front area of the vehicle. The signal assembly is electrically coupled to both the brake lights of the vehicle and a variable rate flasher. Upon a depression of the brake pedal of the vehicle, the signal assembly will illuminate or flash to warn others of the vehicle's deceleration. Alternate embodiments of the present invention further include a variable aperture assembly controlled by a deceleration sensor for varying the intensity of the signal assembly as a function of the vehicle's deceleration, and a lens cover positionable over the signal assembly operable to produce three distinct light zones.

  • Patent number: 5371660
Abstract: An illumination system includes an artificial radiant source that emits energy in the visible and infrared regions of the spectrum. A radiation splitter splits the majority of the visible energy from the majority of the infrared energy to form an illumination beam and a heating beam. A light conductor conducts portions of the visible light to at least one area to be illuminated, and a heat recovery system recovers energy from the heating beam and provides it at an energy output. A solar collector may direct a solar beam on the radiation splitter to supplement the artificial source beam. A supporting portion may support a lighting fixture. An artificial illumination source is placed at a position that is unsupported by the supporting portion, and a light conductor provides an optical path for radiation produced by the source to the fixture.

  • Patent number: 5369557
Abstract: A searchlight (40) includes a high-power xenon-arc lamp (12) having a longitudinal axis (16), and an anode (18) and cathode (20) which are spaced from each other along the axis (16). The lamp (12) becomes inoperative when the anode (18) is disposed below the cathode (20) by more than a small distance. A first reflector (28) is integrally movable with the lamp (12) and has a parabolic reflecting surface (28a) for collecting light from the lamp (12) and reflecting the collected light generally parallel to the axis (16) as a beam (34). A second reflector (44) is also integrally movable with the lamp (12) for receiving the beam (34) from the first reflector (28) and reflecting the beam (48) away from the axis (16) at a right angle. With the anode (18) of the lamp (12) maintained at the same height as or above the cathode (20) and the searchlight (40) rotated such that the axis (16) sweeps a 180.degree. arc from horizontal through vertical to horizontal, the beam (48) from the second reflector (44) sweeps a 180.

  • Patent number: 5365734
Abstract: A plurality of lean NOx catalysts are installed in passages of a dual passage portion of an exhaust conduit of an internal combustion engine. A space velocity changing means including a valve is provided at a connecting portion of the passages so that the amount of exhaust gas flowing through the lean NOx catalysts is altered periodically. When a space velocity of exhaust gas at the lean NOx catalyst changes from a low velocity to a high velocity, an NOx purification rate of the lean NOx catalyst increases momentarily. By repeatedly generating the NOx purification rate increased conditions, the NOx purification rate of the NOx purification apparatus including the plurality of lean NOx catalysts is greatly increased.
