  • Patent number: 4028035
Abstract: An industrial-sized briquetting press having two independent bearing housings for supporting the drive shafts of the briquette-forming rolls. One of the bearing housings is rigidly mounted and the other is pivotally mounted to the first by a pivot located midway between the longitudinal axes of the drive shafts. The axes are substantially parallel and the pivotally mounted housing moves in the plane of the axes. The rolls are biased together by hydraulic cylinders. Connecting rods attached to the rigidly mounted bearing housing, slidably passing through the pivotally mounted bearing housing and hollow piston rods of the hydraulic cylinders, and supporting the hydraulic cylinders prevent movement of the briquette-forming rolls in relative longitudinal and lateral directions. The press has no overall frame permitting easy access for repair and maintenance and the pivot is demountable permitting removal of the pivotally mounted bearing housing.

  • Patent number: 4028040
Abstract: Molten coke forming material is processed by infeed through sealing gates to an elongated housing within which it is mixed, cooled and compacted into a solid mass. When sufficiently hardened, the compacted mass is expelled from the housing. A gas may be injected into that zone of the housing within which the material undergoes mixing while in a molten state.

  • Patent number: 4028033
Abstract: This invention concerns an apparatus for embossing a plastic workpiece using vibratory energy. A workpiece to be embossed is brought into forced engagement with indicia carried by an embossing ring which is disposed at or in proximity to the antinodal region of longitudinal motion of a resonator. The resonator is caused to vibrate at its natural frequency of oscillation in a direction substantially parallel to the workpiece surface. After embossing the workpiece is removed from contact with the resonator.

  • Patent number: 4025252
Abstract: The present granulating apparatus is especially suitable for chopping strands or thermoplastic material into small pieces as the strands emerge from nozzles. For transporting these strands when they are still hot and partially liquid from the nozzles to a cutting apparatus, there is arranged a chute between the nozzles and a pair of feeding rollers just upstream of the cutting apparatus. The feeding rollers exert a slight pull on the strands. The chute has an entrance end or inlet and an exit end or outlet, as well as a chute path interconnecting said ends, said chute path protruding at least at said ends from a common plane defined by the nozzles and by said feeding rollers, whereby the strands are pressed against the chute at least at the chute ends. A housing surrounds the cutting roller. Cooling water supplied to the housing is divided into a main stream and into a water curtain. The water curtain is so located that the cut off granules must first pass through the curtain before contacting the housing.

  • Patent number: 4025254
Abstract: The present apparatus deposits a fleece of wood chips, particles or shavings on a conveyor belt for manufacturing panels. In order to avoid a uniform orientation of all particles in one direction and to assure an orientation of the particles in all directions in substantially uniform distribution, there is provided a particle flow disturbing device for disorienting the chips, particles or shavings as they are directed toward a conveyor belt. The particle flow disturbing device includes a plurality of screens, which intersect at a common axis, which is located slightly above and across the conveyor belt and which extends normal to the direction of movement of the conveyor belt. The wood chips are directed downwardly through the screens by an air current flowing generally in parallel to the conveyor belt to mix the descending wood chips. The common intersection axis of the screens is located upstream of the opposite edges of the screens with respect to the air current.

  • Patent number: 4025249
Abstract: An improved apparatus is set forth wherein powder is produced by melting metal in a crucible where it is then poured into a tundish which directs the molten metal onto a spinning disc means. A nozzle plate has a central opening through which the metal is directed from the tundish to the disc means. An efficient annular nozzle means directs a cooling fluid around the disc means. The crucible has means for tilting it which keeps the molten metal entering the tundish properly as the metal is poured therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4025263
Abstract: An apparatus for manufacturing thermoplastic duplication plates having a relief image transcribed thereto from a matrix which has a relief pattern in complemental relation to the transcribed relief image. To this end, the apparatus includes a hollow cylinder heated to a predetermined temperature and by which a thermoplastic resin sheet is, while clinging thereto, transported towards a transcription clearance. A movable platen supported for movement between standby and operated positions cooperates with the hollow cylinder to define the transcription clearance. During the transportation of the thermoplastic resin sheet towards the transcription clearance, it becomes substantially semi-fluidized so that, during passage of the thermoplastic resin sheet together with the matrix carried by the platen being moved towards the operated position, the thermoplastic resin sheet penetrates deep into indentations in the matrix which define the relief pattern, thereby completing a thermoplastic duplication plate.

  • Patent number: 4025268
Abstract: Plasticizable material is pressure molded into articles free from flash in mold cavities of specialized molds defined by separate mold sections with removable cores. Prior to and during molding, the sections are held clamped together to fully confine the material which is pressurized by reducing the volumetric capacity of each cavity. This pressurization is maintained until the material is set or cured, and may be increased before final set to forge or densify the material further. The method employs a conventional press and two gangs of specialized two-piece, multi-cavity molds. The molds of each gang are supported in a horizontal row, with their juxtaposed flat faces and parting planes disposed vertically, for movement of each mold section flatwise endwise of the row to open and closed positions. The mold sections are clamped closed by power means which apply extraneous clamping pressure independently of the press operation.

  • Patent number: 4025272
Abstract: A mat formed of a mixture of board particles and a bonding agent is conveyed to oppositely rotating rollers which compress said mat to a desired thickness as the mat passes therethrough. A conveyor associated with the rollers is provided for carrying the compressed mat between a pair of platens mounted in a fixed relationship with respect to the continuously moving mat. As it passes between the platens, the mat is supported by a fluid bearing and is exposed to heat to cure the bonding agent. The platens are internally divided into separate subcompartments. The pressure in these subcompartments is regulated such that the mat is subjected to controlled pressures as it moves past the platens.

  • Patent number: 4025278
Abstract: A board is formed by accumulating a mass of sugarcane rind fibers in a collection zone ahead of a horizontally reciprocable first-stage plunger that has a sweep face. The first-stage plunger is shifted horizontally toward a fiber compression zone to horizontally compact the sugarcane rind fibers and orient the fibers in vertical planes disposed substantially parallel to the sweep face. A second-stage plunger is shifted vertically downwardly from above the compression zone to push the horizontally compacted sugarcane rind fibers downwardly into a generally vertical passage means while vertically compressing the fibers. Consequently, the fibers are oriented in substantially horizontal planes to define a board segment comprised of sugarcane rind fibers having their axes disposed substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the board segment. The steps of accumulating, horizontally shifting, and vertically shifting are repeated to establish a column of abutting board segments in the extrusion passage.
