Abstract: A rotor centering device comprising two radial bearings each one constituted of first and second opposing members with angular contact races, mounted with axial clearance so that if one of the said members is in abutment, the other member has a radial clearance. The first angular contact centering members of the first and second bearings are also opposing, and the second angular contact centering members of the first and second bearings are likewise opposing, so that by relative axial movement of the inner and outer contact races of both first and second centering means belonging to the two bearings, simultaneous contact of the inner and outer faces is achieved either with the first centering members or with the second centering members which happen to be opposing on the two bearings.
Abstract: A guide and seal assembly for a piston of a drowned piston type pump comprising at least a chamber within which the said piston reciprocates to suck into and supply from the said chamber a liquid. The assembly comprises a ring having a first frontal seat for a first annular seal element having a substantially C-shaped cross-section and an annular groove formed in the inner cylindrical surface of the ring and arranged to accommodate a second annular seal element of substantially U-shaped cross-section; a first and a second annular cavities formed in the ring communicate with each other by means of at least a radial hole, and the first annular cavity communicates with at least a discharge hole for the liquid which gathers in the first cavity.
Abstract: A packing nut which when retrofitted to or assembled into a stuffing box and hydraulically or manually actuated applies force to packing in the stuffing box, compressing the packing to seal on stationary wireline or pump rods or to wipe or seal on moving wireline or rods passing through a hole in a piston rod on which there is an operating piston in the packing nut body. The piston rod may be rotated to adjust its length for packing contact, and desired packing compression may be maintained by further rod rotation if pressured fluid is not available for hydraulic actuation. A connection for a remotely pressured fluid conduit is provided on the packing nut housing to deliver actuating fluid to the operating piston.
Abstract: A face-seal arrangement for effecting a fluid seal between a housing and a shaft rotatable therein and comprising a sleeve-like diaphragm interposed between an annular shell and a sealing member and having compression spring means loading the diaphragm outwardly relative to the shell further includes a forged sealing ring having a profiled periphery thereto, a sealing surface being provided on the sealing member for engagement with a smooth sealing surface on the sealing ring. The arrangement is a unitized structure in that the sealing ring is held captive relative to the annular shell with the spring-loaded sealing member interposed therebetween and freely movable in the axial direction of the arrangement.
Abstract: A pump is provided with an adjustable tapered seal mechanism so that when wear occurs a simple adjustment is required rather than a dismantling of the pump and replacement with a new seal.
Abstract: A seal for use in rotating machinery such as a gas turbine engine comprises two pole pieces attached to the engine casing and defining a gap in which a magnetic powder is held by a magnetic field generated by a permanent magnet, electro-magnet or a combination of the two. The non-magnetic fins of the adjacent rotor (e.g. turbine blades), extend into the gap and distort the magnetic field so that while there is a small clearance between the fin and the powder, this small clearance can be maintained approximately the same whatever the position of the fin in the gap. A seeding tube allows magnetic powder to be supplied to the gap to make good any loss of powder.
Abstract: A shaft seal including a sealing element and a drive ring assembly for mounting the sealing element with respect to a shaft, for rotation therewith; the drive ring assembly comprising a pair of concentric rings one mounted within the bore of the other, a plurality of circumferentially spaced radial clamping screws in screw threaded engagement with the outer ring, so that they may be tightened against the outer surface of the inner ring, the abutting surfaces of the screws and the inner ring being mutually inclined, so that tightening of the screws against the inner ring, will cause the inner ring to move axially towards a shoulder on the bore of the outer ring, so as to compress a sealing ring positioned between the shoulder and the opposed end of the inner ring, thereby causing the sealing ring to expand radially into sealing engagement with the opposed surfaces of the shaft and the outer ring, while at the same time said screws deform the inner ring into clamping engagement with the shaft.
Abstract: A clearance-type seal for use in rotary fluid handling machinery for preventing lubricant from leaking into working fluid by flowing by capillary action along a fixed surface wherein a coating which is not wetted by the lubricant is placed on the fixed surface of the machinery such that any lubricant which may flow onto the coating is caused to bead up and is thus easily swept away by flow of seal gas.
Abstract: A packing assembly (10) for sealing the annulus between concentric tubular members (12, 14). The assembly (10) includes upper and lower sealing ring assemblies (31, 32) on each side of a lantern ring (33), and upper and lower retainer rings (36, 35) located atop and below the sealing ring assemblies and bolted together to maintain the rings in stacked concentric relation. Each sealing ring assembly (31, 32) includes a central lubricating packing ring (34) having inner and outer lubricating surfaces of graphite material; an inner pair of upper and lower metal seal rings (69, 70) seated in annular grooves in the central lubricating packing ring (34); and an outer pair of upper and lower metal seal rings (83, 84) located in annular grooves in the outer periphery of the lubricating packing ring (34).
Abstract: A dual planar compression ring arrangement where first and second compression rings for fitting into a single groove of a piston coaxial with and abutting one another. The first ring has a flat surface provided with an axial projection for fitting into the gap of the second ring to prevent rotation of the ring gaps towards one another. The gap in the second ring is contoured to permit full closure of the second ring upon itself around the projection.
Abstract: A shaft-seal assembly is disclosed which includes a thin polytretrafluorethylene sleeve-like member in line sealing contact with the sealing face of a flexible, frusto-conical support and through which the sealing pressure of a garter spring and the support is applied to the shaft to be sealed.
Abstract: A gasket device for statically sealing high pressure and temperature fluids, comprising a metal liner shaped to define at least two cavities laid beside each other in inverted positions, wherein inserts of an elastic material are accommodated which protrude from the cavities and ensure a tight seal contact with mating surfaces on two flanged elements to be interconnected.
Abstract: An improved heat resistant seal assembly for sealing across an annular recess between the interior of a wellhead member and the exterior of a tubular member including a heat resistant seal ring in the recess, a pressure responsive ring for moving the seal ring into sealing position in the recess, latching means to retain the pressure responsive ring in set position and spring means between the seal ring and the pressure responsive ring to maintain a sealing force on the seal ring.

Abstract: A mechanical seal made in a unit construction in which a seal unit case is fitted into and held by the inner periphery of a seal housing in a non-rotatable but axially slidable manner, the seal housing houses a rotary ring disposed on a rotary shaft in a non-rotatable but axially slidable manner, and a stationary ring in contact with the rotary ring at the sealing end surfaces thereof is securely fixed to the seal housing. The mechanical seal can be automatically moved to a position where a first fluid and a second fluid are balanced in pressure in response to a difference in pressure between these two fluids.
Abstract: A packoff for sealing between an external cylindrical surface and a member therearound having a resilient ring, metal seal rings on the end surfaces of the resilient ring, the exterior of the resilient ring being concave to provide an annular recess, means for injecting and pressurizing plastic packing in said annular recess to cause sealing engagement of said metal seal rings and means to prevent leakage of pressure from the annular recess, and the inner and outer flanges on said metal seal rings providing a metal-to-metal seal.
Abstract: A slip ring arrangement for steering wheels of motor vehicles, with the slip ring arrangement being adapted to not only supply power to a signal horn of the motor vehicle but also to a gas generating unit for an inflatable air bag installation. The slip ring arrangement is sealed with respect to a passenger compartment of the motor vehicle by a contact sealing system in the form of a labyrinth seal.

Abstract: A mechanical face seal adapted to withstand a pressure differential across its sealing faces, includes a bellows unit of monolithic construction, comprising a plurality of corrugations, the crowns of the convolutions directed towards the high pressure side of the seal being of greater radius of curvature than the crowns of the convolutions directed towards the low pressure side of the seal.
Abstract: An electric furnace electrode seal assembly includes a seal ring mounted on the furnace adjacent the electrode opening. The seal ring is stationary and supports a telescoping arrangement of a plurality of cylindrical sealing glands which can be air or convection cooled and extend upwardly along the electrode from the seal ring. The largest diameter gland can be located on top of the seal ring and the uppermost gland can be the smallest diameter and is supported by the electrode holder. Seals are interposed respectively between adjacent glands and these seals permit vertical telescopic movement as well as lateral movement of and slight tilting of the glands relative to each other. The bottom gland can slide on the seal ring to provide for additional lateral movement of the electrode and seal assembly. The assembly prevents leakage of gases and acts as a heat shield.
Abstract: A symmetrical package seal containing two balanced end face seals, the stationary components being adapted for use with shafts of different sizes. In addition, the package seal has means for centering the rotating components relative to the stationary components, for aligning the sealing faces parallel contact, and for bleeding fluid from the chamber formed by the end face seals.
Abstract: A gas seal for a rotatable shaft of a housing which comprises, a first rotatable dimensionally stable seal ring connected to the shaft. A diaphragm is connected to the housing which exerts an axial bias on a second rotatable seal ring. The bias of the diaphragm provides a gap space between the rotatable and fixed seal ring which is supplied with a sealing gas. The material of the fixed ring is different from that of the diaphragm. A compensating ring is connected unilaterally to the fixed ring and of a material at least partly the same as the fixed ring. A slide seat is defined between the compensating ring and the fixed ring to permit axial movement of at least a part of the compensating ring. This part is connected in turn to the diaphragm so that stress free transmission of axial thrust is provided between the seal ring and the diaphragm.
