  • Patent number: 4365816
Abstract: A self-damping bellows seal assembly for providing a seal between a rotatable shaft and a stationary member through which the shaft extends. The assembly includes a flexible bellows surrounding the shaft and secured at one end thereto. An annular face seal is fixed and sealed to the other end of the bellows and is biased by the bellows into sealing engagement with the stationary member. The means which secures and seals the face seal to the bellows includes a flexible member which closely surrounds the shaft and dampens vibrations induced in the bellows. The bellows seal assembly includes stamped sheet-metal parts and can be used when the assembly is to be secured to the stationary member and the face seal to engage a radial face on the shaft.

  • Patent number: 4361333
Abstract: An improved rotating retort seal having integral bearings for aligning the retort seals relative the sealing surface on the rotating vessel portion of the retort. The sealing function and bearing or seal alignment function are separated to extend seal life and improve sealing. Radial alignment bearings and axial alignment bearings are provided for continually positioning the seal assembly housing during sealing surface nutation. The sealing elements, which are fixed relative to the alignment bearings, is thereby continually aligned and realigned in response to sealing surface nutations during retort rotation. The alignment bearings are extended radially outward from the seals on the sealing surface to prevent damage of the bearings by materials processed in the retort. A lubrication passageway is placed between the alignment bearings and seals to provide for common lubrication of both alignment bearings and seals.

  • Patent number: 4358121
Abstract: A ring gap seal for use on the top compression ring of a piston in an internal combustion engine, an air compressor, a fluid pump, a refrigeration pump, or a rotating shaft seal. In one embodiment, the ring gap seal comprises a lip portion adapted to be seated in a slot formed in the upper face of a compression ring and overlying the ring gap in the ring. The seal lip portion is carried by a supporting wall portion disposed at a right angle to the lip portion. A pair of integral spring arms are integral with the wall portion and they engage the inner wall of the ring groove of a piston in which the compression ring and gap seal are mounted so as to urge the seal lip portion outwardly. The explosive gas pressure created in the operation of the engine exerts a downward and outward pressure on the gap seal to seal the top and inner ends of the compression ring gap.

  • Patent number: 4357026
Abstract: Radial gaskets for use in connection with shafts which are axially movable within a cylinder containing a pressurized fluid, particularly in connection with McPherson type dampers. The gaskets include a rigid support ring and a shaped body of flexible sealing material having a lip on the surface of the shaft which when submitted to fluid pressure forms a cutting angle substantially equal to 90.degree. when the gasket is in its working condition. In this manner, the scraping effect of the gasket is increased and the possibility of fluid blow-out and the resultant stresses due to fluid pressures are avoided without negatively affecting the positioning of the lip with respect to the relevant articulation line of the gasket.
