Abstract: A seat for a valve stem comprised of two spaced rings of carbon fiber coated with a dispersion of polytetrafluoroethylene between which is interposed a ring of polytetrafluoroethylene.
Abstract: A ring seal between a housing and a rotatable shaft comprising a plurality of ring members generally concentric with the shaft. A first ring member is provided having an outer annular surface facing externally of the housing, an inner annular surface facing internally of the housing and an annular recess in the inner surface. A flange is provided in the first member, projecting radially inward into the annular recess, thus forming an annular channel in the first member. An opening is provided, opening from the lowest point in the channel of the first member to the outer surface. The first member is fixedly attachable to the housing so as to allow for free rotation of the shaft within the first member. A second ring member is positioned axially internal to the first member and is provided with an outer annular surface facing the inner surface of the first member and an inner annular surface facing internally of the housing.

Abstract: A fluid packing comprising a stacked assembly of V-ring seal elements, special backup/energizing rings interspersed between the seal elements, and a spring-energized lip seal ring that is retained in functional position by an adapter ring having a generally tee-shaped cross-sectional configuration. As the assembly is installed in a stem packing chamber of a valve or choke, or in the packing chamber of a wellhead lockdown screw, with the T-adapter ring at one end of the assembly and a backup ring for the V-ring seal elements at the other end, the lip seal ring and the V-ring seal elements are radially compressed to establish an initial seal between the stem or screw and the chamber wall.
Abstract: In a bushing around a pin, where the bushing is separated from the pin by a series of rollers, as in the pin of a cardan joint, the free space between the bushing and the pin is closed by an axially short packing. An annular protective cap disposed over the packing extends around the pin. The cap has a radially extending section that extends over the axial end of the packing and has an axially extending section covering the packing and extending toward the bushing. A rib inside the radially extending section of the cap extends into a cooperatingly shaped groove in the adjacent radially extending surface of the packing so that the protective cap is elastically held to the packing. The outer end of the rib is thickened and the bottom of the groove is correspondingly widened for holding the cap to the packing.

Abstract: A spiral piston ring made of self-lubricating material and having at least two complete convolutions and having a gradual and continuous taper except for the terminal portions thereof which taper at a steeper angle than the gradual and continuous taper, and with indentations in the convolutions adjacent to the terminal portions which are positioned and which have a size and shape to receive exactly the terminal portions.
Abstract: A novel seal for a magnetic particle brake or clutch of the type having a rotatable shaft made of a non-magnetic material. The seal comprises (a) one or more permanent magnets adapted to be mounted in close proximity to but not engaging the adjacent surface of the rotatable shaft or a movable member that is exposed to the magnetic particles, and (b) means for mounting the one or more magnets and protecting them from excessive external magnetic fields.
Abstract: Means for reducing gas flow in the space between first and second relatively moveable members. The means include a support bracket which is attached to the first member and a seal plate which is hinged to the support bracket. One end of the seal plate is in slideable contact with the second member. The means also includes a flexible membrane which is fixedly attached to the support bracket of the seal plate to prevent leakage of gas through the hinge.
Abstract: A sealing assembly for a device having a rotatable shaft. The sealing assembly includes a stationary seal in association with the device having an opening generally conforming to the rotatable shaft together with a rotatable seal adapted to engage and cooperate with the stationary seal for effecting a seal therebetween. The rotatable seal is adapted to be mounted on the rotatable shaft for rotational movement therewith and includes a collar having an opening generally conforming to the rotatable shaft. The opening in the collar is defined by a normally undersized shaft-confronting surface and the collar is split through the opening along a diameter to include a pair of substantially identical portions. The sealing assembly also includes a spacer formed of a flowable material adapted to be disposed between the substantially identical portions of the collar for sealingly conforming the collar to the rotatable shaft within a normal tolerance range for rotatable shafts.
Abstract: A piston for a reciprocating internal combustion engine includes at least one pressure ring installed in an outer surface of the piston main body adjacent to the piston head. The pressure ring has a double-angle butt end construction comprising an outer circumferential surface slidably contacting the inner circumferential wall of the cylinder, a radially extending first butt flat end face, and a side wall facing the combustion chamber side, namely the high-pressure side, of the engine piston chamber. Only a corner portion formed on the combustion chamber side of the pressure ring by the outer circumferential surface, flat end face and side wall is partially cut away to form a notch which is contiguous to the outer circumferential surface, end face and side wall.
Abstract: A sealing apparatus disposed between a housing and a shaft received in the housing. The sealing apparatus has, at least, a fitting portion which is fitted to either one of the housing and the shaft, and a seal lip of an elastic material which extends axially obliquely from the fitting portion and is provided at its distal end with a seal portion. The sealing apparatus is provided with a bend preventing portion which is formed at the distal end of the seal lip such as to extend axially outwardly of the seal portion.
Abstract: A bubble level has at least two position sensing devices, such as mercury switches, disposed at right angles to each other and connected in a circuit having a three-position switch and an audio indicator, such as a buzzer. When the level is to be used to determine horizontal alignment, these switches move to a first position causing a horizontally disposed one of the position sensors to be cut into the circuit, while simultaneously cutting out the other position sensor. When the level is horizontally aligned, which may be in a position not in full view of the user, the position sensor completes the circuit and causes the audio indicator to sound. When the level is to be used to determine vertical alignment, the switch is moved to a second position, which cuts out the horizontal position sensor and cuts in the vertical position sensor and the same procedure can be undertaken. The switch has a central off position.

Abstract: A sectional gasket assembly and method of making same from at least two elongated gasket sections. Each gasket section has a first connecting element at one end and a second connecting element at the second end. The first end has a first button and a first opening of a given configuration and serving as the first connecting element. The second end has a second button and a second opening of the same configuration serving as the second connecting element. The first end is adapted to be juxtaposed and sealingly mated with an end of a second elongated gasket section to provide a sealed joint thereat. Each juxtaposed opening and button is press-fit to enhance the seal. When the buttons and openings at each end of the gasket section are formed on the same surface of the gasket section, pairs of first openings and buttons may be juxtaposed in complementary fashion, and when the gasket sections are curved or L-shaped, plural pairs of joined gasket sections may be assembled to form an annular gasket assembly.
Abstract: A low friction dynamic seal assembly in which a seal body is selectively bonded to certain portions of a seal case fixable to a rotatable member. The selected bonding creates a hinge with the seal case of controllable resistance to the initial deflection of the seal body caused when the seal case is fixed rotatable member. The seal body is selectively bonded substantially only to that portion of the seal case toward which the seal body is deflected. Therefore, reduced frictional loads are provided at low speed of rotation. Additionally, the hinge provided by the selected bonding allows further deflection of the seal body at higher speeds of rotation to further reduce seal friction.
