  • Patent number: 4618154
Abstract: An annular lip type sealing ring includes an annular body with a generally U-shaped cross-section having a curved heel or base portion in the preferred embodiment and two spaced apart lip portions that define a groove therebetween. The groove terminates at a closed inner end portion near the heel or base and at its opposite end adjacent an open end portion. At least one of the lip portions has respective inwardly and outwardly extending lateral projections. The outwardly extending lateral projection seals against for example a valve shaft, pump plunger or the like. The lip portion has an outer free end with an outer arcuate curved surface. The inwardly extending laterally projecting portion includes an inner curved surface. An elastomer pre-loads the lips with a load that biases the lips to spread apart. The inwardly extending lateral projections conform to and confine the elastomer.

  • Patent number: 4616836
Abstract: A seal having an exterior seal casing which includes a mounting surface and a seal lip body bonded to a portion of the casing, with the seal lip body comprising annular surfaces defining the air and oil side portions of a primary lip which meet along a generally cylindrical locus of measurable axial extent to provide a primary seal band with a plurality of spaced apart hydrodynamic pumping elements located on this seal band. An auxiliary lip is defined by a pair of frusto-conical surfaces meeting along a generally circular locus to provide an auxiliary or excluder lip portion. Said primary and secondary lips are spaced apart by an annular region of generally V-shaped cross-section, and the primary lip dimension or the pumping elements serve to maintain the primary lip seal band spaced just apart from an associated shaft, at least in the regions of the elements. Said auxiliary lip is of reduced diameter in relation to said seal band dimension in the relaxed condition of the seal.

  • Patent number: 4615530
Abstract: A siren comprises a compressed air supply which is deflected by stationary deflectors to exit radially through stator ports. A rotor with spaced ports rotates between the stator and deflector thereby opening and closing the stator ports. Stationary vanes are disposed at circumferentially spaced locations, and constitute together with the deflector plate and stator and rotor housing, plenums. There are fewer rotor ports than stator ports, which generates an out-of-phase acoustical pattern which creates an acoustic combination from the stator ports of an acoustic output at a distance from the siren which is more uniform spatially. The thermoplastic seal between the stator and the rotor has minimal clearance under operating conditions havign been run-in and plastically deformed at a temperature higher than for normal operation.

  • Patent number: 4614348
Abstract: An annular fluid seal for pressurized fluid systems particularly for use with a coupling having interconnectable self-sealing male and female parts. The two-part seal is mounted within an annular gland recess within the male part and includes a relatively rigid primary annular body of synthetic plastic material having an interference fit with the male coupling part poppet valve. The outer diameter of the seal body includes an annular recess receiving an elastomeric O-ring, and the mass of the primary seal body provides maximum strength within the confines of the gland recess to resist deformation due to pressurized fluid to prevent blowout of the seal from its recess.

  • Patent number: 4613142
Abstract: A slide-ring seal for sealing a shaft rotating with respect to a wall. The slide-ring sealing comprises a frame portion provided with connections for a sealing liquid and seal rings (4) provided with slide rings (5), which seal rings are so positioned with respect to each other that the sealing slide surfaces of the slide rings (5) are pressed against each other and rotate with respect to each other. Each slide ring (5) is thereby fastened on the seal ring (4) thereof by means of a shrinkage fit in such a manner that a radial press force (F.sub.K) of the shrinkage fit is wholly directed to act on the center of mass (K) of the cross-sectional area of the slide ring (5). In order to prevent distortion of the slide surface of the slide ring (5), an axial force (F.sub.L) created by deformations of the seal ring is wholly directed to act on the center of mass (K) of the cross-section of the slide ring (5).

  • Patent number: 4610452
Abstract: Sealed bearing rotary cone rock bits that utilize a standard belleville seal oftentimes require that the static side of the seal be secured to a junction formed between a shirttail portion and a journal of a leg of the rock bit. A metal ring on the static side of the belleville seal is secured to the junction between the journal and the shirttail portion of the leg and imposes a load on the inner diameter of an encapsulated belleville spring. By preloading the inner diameter of the belleville spring, the load on the spring continues to increase as the spring is deflected during use. The present invention utilizes an isolated encapsulated belleville spring such that the inner diameter of the belleville spring is not trapped between the metallic ring on the static side of the seal. The result is that as the deflection of the spring is increased under operating conditions, the load reaches a peak value and then begins to decrease.
