  • Patent number: 6079958
Abstract: A dry-pit submersible pump using a totally enclosed fan-cooled (TEFC) electric motor to power the pump. A release mechanism prevents the fan from creating excessive drag when submerged in water. The fan cools the motor when the water level is below the motor, and the surrounding water combines with the fan to cool the motor when the water level rises to at least partially surround the motor. When the fan is at least partially submerged, the release mechanism substantially prevents the fan from imposing a load on the motor due to the surrounding water. The release mechanism can take the form of a shear key, a torque-release clutch or flexible fan blades.

  • Patent number: 6059539
Abstract: A pressure compensator for a sub-sea pumping system for pumping an effluent from a deep-sea wellhead comprising a topside module, a sub-sea module, and an umbilical connection between the topside and sub-sea modules. Hydraulic fluid is circulated through the sub-sea module for cooling and lubricating the motor and the pump. The hydraulic cooling and lubricating fluid is preferably a single hydraulic fluid that is compatible with the effluent being pumped. The hydraulic fluid is circulated through a submerged pressure compensator which may include a bellows assembly. The pressure compensator is responsive to the pressure of the effluent being pumped and pressurizes the hydraulic cooling and lubricating fluid to a pressure above the pressure of the effluent. The pressure compensator also responds when the volume of hydraulic cooling and lubricating fluid in the system is reduced or increased, such as by leakage or thermal expansion, in order to maintain the pressure of the hydraulic fluid.

  • Patent number: 6056516
Abstract: An installation for the production of pressure has three operating states corresponding to a delivery operation, an idle operation, and a partial delivery operation. The installation contains at least two compression chambers in at least one compressor, each chamber being assigned at least one switchable inlet valve. In the delivery operation, the switchable inlet valves act as check-valves that allow pressure medium to flow into their respective compression chambers. Each compression chamber also contains at least one outlet check valve through which compressed pressure medium flows out to a pressure consuming system in the delivery operation. Each switchable inlet valve also has an idling position that allows pressure medium to flow into the applicable compression chamber and back out again without being substantially compressed. In the idle operation of the installation, each switchable inlet valve switches to its idling position.
