    Abstract: The L4 application in the switch is expanded to permit functions previously performed exclusively in the L5 protocol application. Moreover, the L4 application is programmable by the system operator so that the system operator may expand the predefined set of L4 call management operations to accommodate his call processing requirements. Overall supervision of the call-management operations was previously limited to the L5 applications. However, the ability to program the L4 application enables the system operator to decide which call processing operations will be managed by the L5 applications and which operations will be managed by the L4 application. The system operator may thus define, in the L4 application, a proprietary call model that instructs the switching node to manage all incoming calls, or the system operator may specify the call model on a channel by channel basis. The latter arrangement programs the switching node to use different call-processing protocols among the various channels.

As a response to the determination that the called communication device, such as the telephone, is in an unavailable condition, a first notification signal is transmitted from a calling communication device to the unavailable called device. The first notification signal may be an application program that is automatically executed at the called device. Alternatively, the first notification signal may be a special protocol element that triggers execution of a camp-on program stored at the called device. The first notification signal includes the network address of the calling device.

    Abstract: In the method for overload control in a wireless communications network employing On-Demand Multiple Access Fair Queuing, if the downlink/uplink buffer occupancy of the network has exceeded a high threshold, the base station determines if this is caused by a specific remote host or by a group of remote hosts. If caused by a specific remote host, the base station normally sends a flow control signal to the remote host to prevent it from sending more data, but may alternatively elect to disconnect other remotes if the remote experiencing bad performance is of a higher priority. The base station may additionally reduce the bandwidth shares allocated to any remote that have indicated tolerance for a variable allocated bandwidth. If the measured frame error rates for many remote hosts are increasing, then the base station may elect to disconnect those remote hosts that permit service interruption in order that more bandwidth may be allocated to the remaining users.

When an end to end Quality of Service (QoS) path is not performing adequately, the delay and jitter characteristics are measured for individual network subsystems. An audio signal is converted into a stream of audio packets and sent hop by hop to the different routers in the network having the loopback interface. QoS is determined by looping back the stream of audio packets from the different routers. If necessary, the network is reconfigured according to loopback delay in the individual network subsystems. Reconfiguration can comprise routing telephone calls through different paths in the network or adding additional equipment to increase capacity.

    Abstract: A bi-level framing structure for DSL phone systems uses 4 KHz physical frames and mux data frames. The mux data frames each start with a sync byte and contain user payload bytes. A group of mux data frames are appended with forward-error-correction FEC bytes to make a codeword. The codeword is then partitioned into physical 4-KHz frames. The physical frames are transformed by an inverse fast-Fourier transform (IFFT) outputting symbols at 4 KHz for transmission. For high line rates, each codeword has S mux data frames and S physical frames. There are also at least S FEC bytes if error correction is enabled. However, for lower line rates, there are S physical frames but only S/M mux data frames in each codeword. The efficiency factor M is 1 for high line rates, but 4 for lower line rates. Reducing the number of mux data frames reduces the number of sync bytes in a codeword, decreasing overhead. The FEC bytes are spread among more physical frames, reducing error-correction overhead.

During operation, each RP performs self-checks to determine whether sufficient resources exist within the RP for providing Internet communication. An example of such a resource is an Internet protocol (IP) address pool. Each RP may have several IP address pools that are associated with individual Internet service providers (ISPs). If, for example, an individual ISP's IP address pool is depleted within a particular RP, then that RP signals as much to call routing logic. The call routing logic will not route calls for that individual ISP to that particular RP until the call routing logic receives another signal indicating that the depleted resource has been replenished.
