  • Patent number: 5797452
Abstract: This invention provides the structure and operation of a double-acting, deep-well fluid extraction pump assembly which includes a power piston housed on top of a pumping piston along with a power control system. The pumping piston has a dynamic, reciprocating, bi-directionally self-cleaning, suction filter and houses poppet-type, uni-directional, fluid flow control valves that control the inflow and outflow of extracted fluid through the pumping piston. Gland membranes and a number of double-acting, lineal, fluid motor pistons divide the power piston into pressure chambers and into fluid conduits, with the divisions conjointly providing a path for inflow of hydraulic power fluid and a path for outflow of extracted fluid. The power control system includes a four-way, directional, flow-control valve for controlling cycling frequency, a timer and a flow switch for controlling recovery periods, an unloading relief valve for controlling fluid pressure and a flow-control valve for controlling pumping speed.

Abstract: A hydraulic tensioner with an internal reservoir. The tensioner includes a housing having a sleeve, and a hollow piston slidably received about the sleeve and biased in a protruding direction by a spring. A fluid chamber is defined by the sleeve and the hollow piston. Fluid from an external source flows through a passageway into a reservoir which is located inside the tensioner housing above the fluid chamber. The reservoir is connected to the fluid chamber such that fluid flows from the reservoir through a check valve assembly into the fluid chamber such that the fluid chamber remains filled with fluid.

  • Patent number: 5797816
Abstract: A variable ratio drive pulley of the type employed in snowmobiles to transmit a drive from the snowmobile engine to a variable ratio belt drive transmission has a fixed flange and an opposed movable flange which cooperate to drive the belt. The drive pulley is coupled to rotate with the engine crankshaft and the movable flange incorporates a centrifugal means that operates to advance it towards the fixed flange, with a force that increases with speed of rotation, to grip the transmission belt between the flanges and apply a driving torque thereto, this torque being applied by both the flanges. To reduce the effects of engine induced vibrations on the centrifugal means and on the movable flange, a damping structure is incorporated in the torque path between the engine crankshaft and the centrifugal means and movable flange.

  • Patent number: 5782709
Abstract: A belt tensioning device is provided for a pulley drive mechanism including a motor with a drive shaft, a drive pulley mounted on a drive shaft, an idler pulley rotatably mounted in a pulley support, and a drive belt trained around the pulleys. The belt tensioning device includes a scissor jack connected between the motor and the idler pulley support. The jack is extendible so as to increase the spacing between the pulleys and thereby increase the belt tension, and retractable so as to decrease the spacing between the pulleys and thereby decrease the belt tension. The extension and retraction of the scissor arms of the jack is controlled by a draw bolt, or alternatively, by a spring which automatically provides tension on the belt. In the method of adjusting the belt tension, the jack is installed between the drive pulley and the idler pulley, and the jack is then actuated so as to adjust the spacing between the pulleys and thereby adjust the tension of the drive belt.

  • Patent number: 5782303
Abstract: An apparatus which includes an external housing (10) and a slotted internal sleeve (26) machined from cylindrical lengths of hollow metal pipe stock, and one or more partially-hollowed-out plug screws (16). This apparatus uses no seals or O-rings. The apparatus is attached between a tubing string of a well and a big bore pump. When activated, the apparatus permits fluids to drain from well tubing. The apparatus has only one moving part and is activated by pulling upward on sucker rods of a well, an action which causes the top of a big bore pump plunger to make contact with the sleeve and move the sleeve upward within the housing. The sleeve is secured inside the housing by one or more partially-hollowed-out plug screws which are sheared when the contact is made, exposing at least one opening. The opening in the sleeve aligns with the hole in the partially-hollowed-out plug screw caused by the shearing.

  • Patent number: 5782304
Abstract: A retainer valve provides increased safety in wellsite operations. In a preferred embodiment, operation of the retainer valve may be responsive to control line pressure or to tubing pressure. The retainer valve response is controlled by several factors, among which are relative tubing and balance line pressures, and axial positions of a number of pistons relative to a tubular J-slot member. If the control and balance lines are disconnected, or otherwise unavailable for operation of the valve, it may still be operated by manipulation of the tubing pressure at the earth's surface. Thus, the valve may be opened in emergency situations in which the control and balance lines are unavailable, but operation of the valve is still needed in order to safely relieve trapped pressure in the tubing string and/or to kill the well, unlatch a subsea test tree, etc. The retainer valve is also useful as a lubricator valve.
