    Abstract: A technique for managing session setup for video on demand sessions involves caching information related to session setup for a session manager and then utilizing the cached information to setup a video on demand session for a client in response to a session setup request that is received from the client. Because information related to session setup is cached for the session manager, the session manager can utilize the information to establish a session without having to exchange messages with other video on demand elements, in particular other servers in the video on demand network. Reducing or eliminating the number of messages exchanged between video on demand elements enables video on demand sessions to be quickly and efficiently setup.

The EEN sleep interval time limit may be determined based on a number of hops between endpoint devices. Packets may be inspected to determine a packet data type and/or end-to-end sleep interval limitation information. The time limit may be determined based on latency requirements of data streams. A time limit for a port may be determined based on sleep time limits for data streams communicated via the port. The time limits may be statically and/or dynamically configured. The network device may be configured via a network management interface.

Each network manager maintains a heartbeat table with counters to track each path to each destination interconnect chip. When a first network manager of a first interconnect chip detects a change from at least one valid path to no working paths for a second interconnect chip of the interconnect chips, the quarantine mode is established for a programmable quarantine time interval and all paths are prevented from advertising good heartbeats during the quarantine time interval.

If so, the node processes the parameters in the specification request and modifies its own behavior based on the values in the parameters of the specification request. The gateway node iteratively modifies the parameters disseminated in subsequent specification requests based on a divergence between a computed quality of information value and a desired quality of information value.
