  • Patent number: 4698136
Abstract: A process for the continuous production of boiler feed water from process waters in the oil extraction industry during which salts and hydrocarbons are removed from the water, without Fe.sup.++ precipitating. The heavy hydrocarbons are mechanically separated, the volatile hydrocarbons are separated from the water, by means of a thermal degassing, and the low boiling and the non-condensable hydrocarbons are separated in a shower evaporation step with downstream vapor compression, wherein the low boiling non-condensable hydrocarbons are evaporated with the waste water within the shower evaporator and the non-condensable hydrocarbons then are drawn off from a downstream separator. A salt-free oxygen-free pure water is removed from a separator.

Abstract: There is disclosed herein a beach trash remover which includes a motorized vehicle having a conventional construction type shovel attached to the front thereof. An opening covered by a screen is provided in the center of shovel to allow the beach sand, containing the trash, to drop back onto the beach thereby leaving the trash within the screened opening portion of the shovel. The screen is held on a frame which is coupled to the shovel through shock absorbers and means are provided to provide a vibrating motion to the screened frame to further aid in returning the sand to the beach. A grader may be attached to the back end of the beach trash remover to cover any tire tracks or otherwise smooth the beach.

  • Patent number: 4696717
Abstract: The invention concerns a process for automatically regenerating copper chloride etch solutions, wherein regeneration is effected by means of hydrogen peroxide and hydrochloric acid in a regeneration unit separated from the etch chamber. The addition of hydrogen peroxide is controlled by a redox electrode, while hydrochloric acid and water are added in computed quantities. Hydrogen peroxide and hydrochloric acid are converted in an oxidation reactor into hypochlorous acid and immediately afterwards are combined with the copper (I) chloride etch solution which contains at least the quantity of hydrochloric acid required for oxidizing the copper (I) ions. In the regeneration unit a salt basket with solid sodium chloride is arranged or adjacent to said unit a salt tank with an overflow to said regeneration unit is provided, both of which permit the sodium chloride concentration of the etch solution being kept constant.

  • Patent number: 4696720
Abstract: The present invention involves a process for removing water from mixtures of alcohols and water by contacting such a mixture with an ion exchange resin of either the cation or anion type. Prior to use for alcohol dehydration, the ion exchange resin itself is dehydrated if necessary or desired by contacting it with methanol, propanol, isopropanol, acetone or other like low molecular weight hydrophilic solvents. After use for alcohol dehydration, the ion exchange resin is regenerated by contacting it with these regenerating agents.

  • Patent number: 4695306
Abstract: An automatic machine for welding optical fibers end-to-end comprises a first plate (1) for supporting a first or "reference" fiber (2) and a second plate (5) for supporting a second or "moving" fiber (6). The second plate can be translated along Ox and Oy axes in a plane perpendicular to the axes of the fibers. The ends of the fibers are illuminated by light sources (30, 31), optical systems make images thereof, and optical pick-ups (12, 13, 18, 19) located at the image points provide optical signals representative of the positions of the optical fibers relative to each of said Ox and Oy axes. These signals are converted into electrical signals and are compared by electronic comparators (15, 21) which deliver corresponding error signals to control means (17, 23, 24) for moving the second plate until the moving fiber is in alignment with the reference fiber.

  • Patent number: 4693784
Abstract: A method for applying a negative pressure over a sector of an air-pervious mantle of a roll includes providing a suction chamber within the pervious roll mantle which extends over a suction sector of the roll, directing air jets away from the suction chamber at the outermost edge portions of the suction chamber, the air jets causing air currents to be ejected from the suction chamber at the outermost edge zones thereof, the air currents thereby producing air seals at the outermost edge zones of the suction chamber without the use of contact-type sealing elements and at the same time, at least partly, providing a negative pressure in the suction chamber. A suction roll includes blow nozzles for directing air jets away from the suction chamber substantially parallel to the tangent of the roll mantle proximate to the blow nozzles. The inlet sides of the blow nozzles are connected to a pressure chamber situated within the roll mantle, the pressure chamber adapted to be connected to a pressure source.

  • Patent number: 4693783
Abstract: Method of producing metal interconnections in a semiconductor integrated circuit structure of a body of silicon coated with silicon dioxide having openings therein exposing contact regions to underlying silicon. A thick layer of an insulating or dielectric material, for example, polymide, is deposited on the body. Grooves in the pattern of the desired interconnections are etched through the thick insulating layer to the underlying silicon dioxide and contact regions. Metal is deposited to fill the grooves and cover the thick layer of insulating material. Excess metal is removed to form a planar surface exposing the surface of the thick insulating layer with the grooves containing metal to provide electrical connections between contact regions.

  • Patent number: 4692208
Abstract: On a support which supports a light-emitting semiconductor device there is arranged a cap which is hermetically sealed to the support. In the cap there is provided a transparent plate, an inner layer of which facing the semiconductor device consists of a material having a high refractive index (>1.7). On the outer side of the plate there is provided a layer of photosensitive lacquer which is exposed to the light emitted by the semiconductor device. After development of the layer of lacquer, only the exposed part which is situated opposite the semiconductor device remains. This part is heated to the melting point, thus forming a droplet of lacquer, after which the outer layer of the plate and the droplet of lacquer are removed by way of a non-selective etching method, so that a lens which is situated opposite the semiconductor device and a flat window which surrounds the lens are automatically formed at the same time.

  • Patent number: 4689110
Abstract: A composite printed circuit board structure including multiple layers of graphite interleaved with layers of a dielectric material, such as a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and woven glass laminate. Some of the dielectric layers are copper clad, and at least some of the graphite layers are positioned in close proximity to the copper cladding layers, to provide good heat dissipation properties. The PTFE provides a desirably low dielectric constant and the graphite also provides good mechanical strength and a low or negative coefficient of thermal expansion, to permit matching of the coefficient with that of chip carriers used to mount components on the circuit board.

  • Patent number: 4687548
Abstract: Method and apparatus in the head box of a paper machine for controlling the distortion of fibre orientation in the paper web comprise an arrangement wherein by-pass flows of pulp suspension are passed through opposite passages lateral of the turbulence generator preceding the slice portion or discharge channel of the head box. The magnitude and/or the mutual relationship of the by-pass flows is adjusted to control the distortion of the fibre orientation in that the by-pass flows produce a transverse flow in the discharge flow of the pulp suspension from the head box, the speed of which compensates for the distortion of the fibre orientation.
