Abstract: An apparatus may generate a text entry with a user interface. The apparatus may include a display, a user input device, a memory and a processor. The apparatus may display single character user input controls and multi-character user input controls on the display. Each of the single character user input controls and the multi-character user input controls may be buttons selectable with the user input device. A single character user input control may correspond to a single character and a multi-character user input control may correspond to a group of characters. The apparatus may display one of the multi-character user input controls in a display region and other user input controls outside of the display region. If the multi-character user input control is selected, the apparatus may replace the multi-character user input control with a second set of single character user input controls in an expanded display region.

Abstract: A method for accessing information sources and services on the Web, from a communication device connected via a network to the Internet. The method comprises: one or several steps of displaying a selection page among a plurality of selection pages in a treelike arrangement and stored locally, each selection page comprising a set of icons including one or several icons providing direct access to the information sources and one or several icons for accessing other selection pages; and a step which consists in transmitting, in response to a selection of an icon providing direct access in a selection page being displayed, the address of the information source corresponding to the icon. The invention is particularly useful in communication and office automation equipment, installed in public booths, in enclosed spaces or in private sites or for professional use.

Abstract: A method and system for displaying hierarchical data. An orthogonal table structure, which includes a row structure S1, a column structure S2, and an array structure S3, is displayed. S1 and S2 include hierarchical levels of a first hierarchy E1 and a second hierarchy E2, respectively, of linked non-numeric data items. S3 is an array of cells such that every combination of a linear path through S1 and a linear path through S2 has an intersection disposed in the orthogonal table structure at a unique cell of S3. An assignment icon is depicted at each cell of S3, such that selection of the assignment icon at each cell results in displaying data items of a flat vector E3 of non-numeric data items. One of data items of E3 may be selected for insertion or replacement in each cell.

Abstract: An electronic commerce method can include the step of determining a plurality of e-commerce partners. For each partner, a partner identifier can be presented within a commerce GUI. In the commerce GUI, the partner identifier can be an expandable node. An expansion of at least one of the nodes can be presented within the commerce GUI. For each expansion, a transaction identifier can be presented as a child node of the expanded node. The transaction identifier can represent an electronic commerce transaction between a user of the commerce GUI and the associated e-commerce partner.

Abstract: A novel application and user interface for facilitating group interactions over a network integrates messaging, file sharing, media playing, journaling, profiles, and gaming into a cohesive environment. The groups facilitated by the invention are persistent and mobile in that a user does not have to recollect and reconfigure the group each time he or she wants to interact with the group online and, while online, the group may be taken from one activity to another without having to disband and reconnect at the second activity. The application is modular so as to be extensible to include other activities and functionalities. In an embodiment, the group interaction application utilizes a peer-to-peer network environment to facilitate network communications between group members.

Abstract: A display control apparatus includes an image creating section creating a first image having a predetermined number of drawing areas each onto which a thumbnail image is drawn, and an erasing section erasing at least one drawing area from the first image in response to an instruction from a user to display the first image. The number of drawing areas erased is the same as a number that is determined by subtracting the number of thumbnail images to be drawn in the first image from the predetermined number of drawing areas of the first image. The apparatus also includes a drawing section drawing a thumbnail image in each of the unerased drawing areas remaining in the first image, and a display controlling section controlling display of the first image including the thumbnail image drawn in each drawing area.

Abstract: A method and system are provided for managing application programs with non-responsive user interfaces, possibly due to a bottleneck in handling events/messages. The method and system make an apparently frozen application user interface responsive so as to permit alternative tasks be executed or close the hung application. This is enabled by implementing routines to (a) detect if an application is hung, (b) replace the user interface for the hung application with a ghost interface, implemented by a separate thread, that permits system functionality such as sizing, minimization and closing of the application, and (c) destroying the ghost interface if the hung application becomes responsive again along with restoring the application's user interface along with updated event queues. Furthermore, creation of the ghost user interface is accompanied by placing a high priority special event in the hung application's queue to detect renewed responsiveness without requiring explicit monitoring.

Abstract: A computer implemented method and system enable users to create a social network providing access to other users. By providing access to such networks via a visual presentation, the system renders content available for access by other network members. Access is sometimes provided through propagation of metadata or other uniquely identifying indicia associated with the social network to all or at least certain other network members.

Abstract: Systems and methods for providing an enhanced auditory behavior to a graphical user interface are described. Control elements portrayed by the graphical user interface on a display are associated with at least two states. When transitioning between states, a sound effect specified for that transition can be provided to provide further user or designer customization of the interface appearance. Movement of objects can be accompanied by a repeated sound effect. Characteristics of both sound effects can be easily adjusted in volume, pitch and frequency.

Abstract: Disclosed is an integrated handheld computer and telephony system. Integration of the handheld computer and telephony system is at the physical and operational level. For example, the integrated handheld computer and telephony system physically integrates a handheld computer with a mobile (e.g., cellular) telephone. In addition, the handheld computer is distinct from telephony system in that they are logically separable. However, they are also operationally integrated, for example, the telephony system executes a telephone application on the processor of the handheld computer. Likewise, the handheld computer can execute applications, for example, a phone book, that can be used to launch the telephony application.

Abstract: Integration of navigation both external to and internal to web-based applications is disclosed. A hidden history frame is used for storing the desired navigation URL that is intended for adding to the browser history. The hidden history HTML frame is created on the browser when the client side application framework is loaded. Only the navigation entry from the hidden history HTML frame is pushed out to the browser history.

Abstract: A display for displaying a high-hierarchical menu and a lower-hierarchical menu corresponding to the high hierarchical menu on a display section, the high-hierarchical menu is displayed on the front side of a virtual cubic menu on the display section, and when it is recognized that the cubic menu has been selected by an inputting operation, the cubic menu is turned and the turning process is displayed with preset interpolation images and then the lower-hierarchical menu is displayed on the top side after the cubic menu is turned. The invention includes sourcing input devices and graphical user interfaces for both input commands and referencing macro elements. Abstract: A system and method for graphically indicating patient information. The invention includes a representative image of the patient with icons to indicate or inform a health care worker of the condition of the patient. Each icon in a set of icons represents a condition available for use in describing the condition of a particular patient. Each icon is located at a predetermined position of the image in each implementation of the invention. After a user creates an image with icons selected for a particular patient, a fixed representation of the image is created. The fixed representation of the image (e.g., on a sheet of paper) is placed proximal to the patient (e.g., bedside) for visual conveyance of the patient's condition.
