  • Patent number: 10384200
Abstract: The present invention relates to a supported catalyst having a structure in which a metal catalyst is supported on a core-shell structured support. The support includes core particles and shell particles having a smaller particle diameter than the core particles and coated on the core particles to form a shell layer. Due to this structure, the supported catalyst can be used to produce carbon nanostructures that form a novel secondary structure in which ends of the carbon nanostructures are supported on the supported catalyst and form independent branches and the opposite ends grow and are assembled together. The novel structure is expected to find application in various fields, such as energy materials, functional composites, pharmaceuticals, batteries, and semiconductors, because of its characteristic shape.

  • Patent number: 10388191
Abstract: Water-activatable, linerless adhesive articles and related methods are described. The adhesive articles utilize a dry, non-tacky protective layer for protecting the adhesive layer from contamination and therefore do not require a release liner. The protective layer includes at least one of amorphous polyvinyl alcohol and poly(ethylene oxide). The adhesive articles are bonded to a substrate by applying a polar solvent, such as water, to the protective layer, which mix to form a tacky material. The tacky material forms a weak, temporary bond with the substrate and allows the adhesive articles to be repositioned on the substrate. The tacky material gradually pools together at the substrate/adhesive article interface to expose the underlying adhesive layer. The exposed adhesive layer then forms a permanent bond with the substrate.

  • Patent number: 10373920
Abstract: Composite cards formed in accordance with the invention include a security layer comprising a hologram or diffraction grating formed at, or in, the center, or core layer, of the card. The hologram may be formed by embossing a designated area of the core layer with a diffraction pattern and depositing a thin layer of metal on the embossed layer. Additional layers may be selectively and symmetrically attached to the top and bottom surfaces of the core layer. A laser may be used to remove selected portions of the metal formed on the embossed layer, at selected stages of forming the card, to impart a selected pattern or information to the holographic region. The cards may be ‘lasered’ when the cards being processed are attached to, and part of, a large sheet of material, whereby the “lasering” of all the cards on the sheet can be done at the same time and relatively inexpensively.

  • Patent number: 10336028
Abstract: The first objective of this paper is to take an existing design for a shape-shifting surface (SSS) and make it waterproof, making it an effective barrier to fluid flow. The second objective is to minimize internal stresses in the device during operation, by optimizing the kinematic geometry of the SSS. The first objective was achieved by adding a waterproof membrane between the layers of the SSS, where the membrane had an origami fold pattern that enables the membrane to mimic the kinematics of the SSS. The second objective was achieved by creating a two objective optimization routine, which determined the kinematic geometry of the SSS which would minimize the internal stresses due to compression/tension of the flexure portion of the SSS during operation. The resulting SSS is easier to operate due to lower stresses, and has a membrane which prevents transverse fluid flow and mimics its motion.

  • Patent number: 10333155
Abstract: The present invention provides a porous medium with increased hydrophobicity and a method of manufacturing the same, in which a micro-nano dual structure is provided by forming nanoprotrusions with a high aspect ratio by performing plasma etching on the surface of a porous medium with a micrometer-scale surface roughness and a hydrophobic thin film is deposited on the surface of the micro-nano dual structure, thus significantly increasing hydrophobicity. When this highly hydrophobic porous medium is used as a gas diffusion layer of a fuel cell, it is possible to efficiently discharge water produced during electrochemical reaction of the fuel cell, thus preventing flooding in the fuel cell. Moreover, it is possible to sufficiently supply reactant gases such as hydrogen and air (oxygen) to a membrane electrode assembly (MEA), thus improving the performance of the fuel cell.
