  • Patent number: 5603865
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a pigment dispersant composition for use with inorganic pigments in coating compositions. The dispersant composition includes a vinyl or acrylic copolymer and a transition metal or rare earth metal salt. The metal salt in combination with the copolymer is useful with inorganic pigment as it lowers the viscosity of the pigment dispersions, thus allowing a higher concentration of pigment in the dispersion and consequently providing dispersions with higher non-volatile content and higher pigment to binder ratios. The presence of the metal salts in the dispersant composition when used with surface coated metal flake pigment provides excellent corrosion reduction of the metal pigment, indicated by the reduction or elimination of hydrogen gassing by the pigment in a coating composition.

  • Patent number: 5602258
Abstract: The present invention relates to a group of organic chelators whose affinity for calcium ion in solution is decreased by electromagnetic radiation. Specifically, the chelators are related to fura-2 and utilize the addition of an azide group to the 3-position of the benzofuron ring of a fura-2 type structure. Photolysis of the azide group causes the calcium ion affinity to decrease 100 to 1000 fold. These chelators when incorporated into rat fibroblasts either by microinjection or by incubation as the membrane-permeable, enzymatically-labile esters and flash-photolyzed cause large increases in intracellular free calcium ion. These chelators are used to generate controlled fast elevation of intracellular free calcium ion concentration to mimic or modulate a number of important cellular responses, especially in nerve or muscle.

  • Patent number: 5599849
Abstract: A process for producing liquid and, optionally, gaseous products from gaseous reactants comprises feeding gaseous reactants into a slurry bed of solid particles suspended in a liquid; allowing the reactants to react as they pass upwardly through the slurry bed, thereby to form liquid and, optionally, gaseous products; and separating liquid product from the solid particles by passing, in a filtration zone within the slurry bed, liquid product through a filtration medium in a first direction, so that a cake of the solid particles forms on the filtration medium. The passage of liquid product through the filtering medium is interrupted. The filtering medium is then backflushed by passing a flushing fluid through the filtering medium in a second direction, opposite to the first direction, for at least portions of the periods that the liquid product passage is interrupted, thereby to dislodge the cake from the filtering medium.

  • Patent number: 5595688
Abstract: There is disclosed a class of inhibitors for mono- and diammonium phosphates which are water soluble and effective at small concentrations rendering the phosphates acceptable in most utilities without separation of the inhibitor. The class of inhibitors are water soluble alkali metal phosphate salts selected from sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium potassium tripolyphosphate, sodium acid pyrophosphate, sodium pyrophosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, trisodium phosphate, disodium phosphate and monosodium phosphate. Effective amounts of these salts range from about 0.025 percent to about 0.3 percent by weight in the ammonium phosphates. It is particularly advantageous that these salts are useful in both types of ammonium phosphates.
