Abstract: Vanillin is difficult to separate from second organic chemicals produced therewith such as parahydroxybenzaldehyde by conventional distillation or rectification because of the proximity of their boiling points. Vanillin can now be readily separated from such second organic chemicals by azeotropic distillation using as an effective azeotropic distillation agent, dibenzyl ether.

Abstract: The present invention provides corrosion inhibited well acidizing compositions and methods of using the compositions to acidize wells. The compositions basically comprise an aqueous acid solution, a corrosion inhibitor comprising at least one quaternary ammonium compound and a corrosion inhibitor intensifier comprised of aliphatic carboxylic acids, crude tall oil, tall oil fatty acids, rosin acids and mixtures thereof.
Abstract: A halogen scavenger contains as an effective ingredient an aromatic compound which has a resonance-effect-relying electron donating group as a substituent. The aromatic compound is constituted, for example, by an aromatic ring such as a substituted or unsubstituted benzene, naphthalene, anthracene and pyridine ring, and at least one group (a resonance-effect-relying electron donating group) which contains a lone-pair-containing hetero atom, such as an oxygen, sulfur or nitrogen atom, adjacent to the aromatic ring.
Abstract: A substantially inert composition has mechanical properties simulating corresponding properties of an energetic composition which may include a nitrate ester and may include a particulate organic energetic filler. A nitrate ester is replaced by a mixture of inert materials having densities less than and more than the density of the ester and present in proportions such that the mixture has substantially the density of the ester. A particulate energetic organic filler is replaced by a particulate inert organic chlorine derivative having substantially the same density. When the ester is 1,2,4-butanetriol trinitrate, which may function as a plasticizer in an elastomeric energetic composition, the less dense material is a non-volatile ester, such as dimethyl phthalate, and the more dense material includes a bromoaromatic derivative as in a mixture of pentabromodiphenyl ether and an aryl phosphate.

Abstract: An alkylbenzotriazole, in combination with mercaptobenzotriazole, tolyltriazole, benzotriazole and/or 1-phenyl-5-mercaptotetrazole, is used to inhibit the corrosion of metallic surfaces, particularly copper surfaces, in contact with an aqueous system. Systems and compositions are also claimed.
Abstract: The invention relates to imidazolidinone derivatives formed from the reaction of (1) a substituted-ethyl imidazolidinone; (2) substituted ethyl/propyl propylene urea or (3) a cyclic propylene urea with: (a) a C.sub.1 -C.sub.24 alkyl or a C.sub.3 -C.sub.24 alkenyl substituted anhydride or, (b) a C.sub.3 -C.sub.24 carboxylic acid or corresponding ester; their compositions and use as corrosion inhibitors and/or surfactants.
Abstract: A water soluble metal anticorrosive comprising a tetrazole compound or a water soluble salt thereof represented by the following formula (1): ##STR1## wherein R and R' each indicate hydrogen, an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group, a phenyl group, an alkylphenyl group, an amino group, a mercapto group or an alkylmercapto group).
Abstract: A method for controlling the formation of gas hydrate crystals in a fluid mixture by admixing with said fluid mixture a polyoxyalkylenediamine in an amount effective to prevent and/or inhibit crystal growth.
Abstract: A non-liquid scatter standard for use in nephelometry and turbidimetry systems which comprises a clear silicon rubber gel in which an effective light scattering amount of inorganic particles are suspended. The particles have an index of refraction greater than that of the silicon rubber gel.
Abstract: This invention aims to provide a gas generating composition of a gas generator for an air bag, which composition produces less combustion residues and is easily adsorbed. This composition comprises azide of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal, metallic silicide, and perchlorate or nitrate of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal. The combustion residues of the azide are changed to be glass silicate by the metallic silicide and caught by a filter of the gas generator, so that they do not pass through the filter of the gas generator nor make holes in the air bag unlike a conventional gas generator. And, the addition of silicon dioxide further improves the catching of the combustion residues of the azide.
Abstract: An improved technique is provided that is capable of accomplishing the expeditious dissolution of gluten (e.g., vital wheat gluten or corn gluten) in water that normally is capable of absorbing water without dissolution. An effective solubilizing concentration of a polysaccharide that contains uronic acid residues is dissolved in the aqueous solvent when contacted with agitation with the gluten component at an elevated temperature. The formation of a substantially homogeneous aqueous solution of the gluten is accomplished with ease without the necessity to resort to the introduction of acids, bases, enzymes, or other solvents as practiced in the prior art. The resulting aqueous solution of gluten is completely edible and is suitable for the controlled uniform introduction of such gluten into association with a variety of food products where it can serve a binding, adhesive, microencapsulation, film-forming, and/or coating function.

Abstract: The invention provides brine based well drilling and servicing fluids which exhibit relatively thermally stable rheological and filtration characteristics. The fluids comprise a brine, an amorphous silica viscosifier, a biopolymer viscosifier, a fluid loss control additive, and a bridging agent. By utilizing both a silica viscosifier and a biopolymer viscosifier to provide the desired rheological characteristics, the fluids have enhanced thermal stability thus maintaining their suspension and hole cleaning properties over an extended temperature range.
Abstract: A process for the preparation of dialkyl tetrahalophthalates. A tetrahalophthalic anhydride or acid is dissolved in excess C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkanols. Residual sulfuric acid is removed by treatment with magnesium acetate or multiple water washes. The mass is esterified with a tetraalkyl titanate, and residual acidic components are removed by treatment with magnesium silicate. These treatments improve processability, production cycle time, product color, clarity and purity.
