  • Patent number: 4555930
Abstract: A digital gas sensing system comprises a plurality of satellite subassembly units each including a central processing unit (CPU) and a plurality of "intelligent" sensors connected to the satellite subassembly units by a single pair of leads. The satellite subassembly units communicate to the sensors in a code having a predetermined number of digital bits. Each sensor has internal "intelligence" and recognizes its own unique address and responds to the satellite subassembly unit in a predetermined code that varies from the satellite subassembly unit code by one parity bit. This arrangement makes it possible for other sensors to distinguish between transmissions from the satellite subassembly unit and transmissions from other sensors. The net result is that the system is able to operate very reliably using only two leads to connect all of the sensors to the satellite sub subassembly unit thereby greatly reducing the wiring and installation costs of the system.

  • Patent number: 4550596
Abstract: An apparatus for instructing an operator to place a gearshift of a manual transmission in an optimum position in accordance with various operating parameters. An upshift zone is formulated and stored in a memory means and when operating conditions of the vehicle fall within the upshift zone, a plurality of timers begin counting for a predetermined amount of time and if operating conditions still fall within predetermined parameters, an upshift signal is issued. The apparatus recognizes if the engine is acting as a brake and if the engine is under a heavy load when accelerating and does not issue an upshift signal.

  • Patent number: 4550591
Abstract: An apparatus for monitoring particulate matter in the fluid comprises a filter means (28) through which fluid is arranged to flow. A pressure sensing means (46) senses the fluid pressure difference across the filter means and produces a pressure signal indicative of the magnitude of the pressure difference. A processing means (49) receives the pressure signal and evaluates therefrom the rate of change of the magnitude of the pressure difference in order to give an indication of particulate matter levels in the fluid. In this way on line monitoring of the debris generation in, for example an oil system, can be effected so that abnormal increases in debris can be detected and long term trends in the build-up of debris can be observed. A particular form of filter medium is also disclosed wherein the filter mean can be transported so that a filter record can be maintained and systematic X-ray analysis of the filter record can be effected.

  • Patent number: 4550597
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for sensing relative movement between a pair of members includes a pair of parts which cooperate to provide an electrical signal upon relative movement between the members. One of these parts may be a Hall effect device and the other part may be a pair of magnets. In order to accurately position the Hall effect device and the magnets relative to each, they are mounted on a substrate or base. The portion of the substrate upon which the magnets are disposed is connected with one of the members. The Hall effect device is disposed on a portion of the substrate which is connected with the other member. Once the substrate has been connected with the two members, it is separated to enable the members to be easily moved relative to each other.

  • Patent number: 4550607
Abstract: A phased array acoustic imaging system including an array of electromechanical transducers, a dedicated signal processing channel for each transducer and electronic control and delay circuits for them, transmits to and receives ultrasonic energy from a body in a controlled, steered and focused fashion. The electronic delay circuits use a unique cyclically symmetrical arrangement of identical delay cells, each with an electronically variable delay element and each dedicated to a receive signal derived from at least one transducer, to form a summing delay line. The individual delay cells are switched under microprocessor control for efficient combined linear-sector scanning or linear or sector scanning alone. The system includes means to achieve dynamic focusing and dynamic apodization in conjunction with the delay cell architecture.

  • Patent number: 4546640
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus for continually monitoring for the presence of suspended or dissolved gas within a viscous material, such as in the material accumulated in the mud reservoir of a mud system used in an oil or gas drilling operation. Pressurized air is injected into the liquid to agitate and dislodge the gas. The dislodged gas is captured within a sealed chamber upon emerging from the liquid. A sample of the gas is continuously vented from the chamber through an outlet tube under the influence of the pressurized air. A gas sensor is mounted with the outlet tube so as to continually and accurately detect the presence of the gas within the liquid.

  • Patent number: 4545250
Abstract: This invention relates to an apparatus for measuring of imaging the characteristic structure of a medium utilizing the power spectrum profile of received signal waves, which are derived from an incident beam pulse of ultrasonic waves or other waves that are incident on the object to be measured and which travel through the object by transmission and reflection. They are affected by various acoustic characteristic structures of the object, and information about the structure can be attained by the procession of the signals received with a transducer. The processing is performed by taking their cepstrum, and filtering the slowly varying cepstra including that of the target Gaussian shaped pulse signal from the fast varying cepstra. The filtered cepstrum is processed further by the inverse transformations to the power spectrum derived from said filtered cepstrum.

  • Patent number: 4545253
Abstract: A data gathering system comprising a single optical fiber having one or more modulators formed thereon, means for launching into the fiber an interrogating light pulse which propagates in a first direction, means for generating at each modulator an optical return signal which propagates in the fiber in a second direction opposite the first direction and which has an intensity which is variable in response to variations in an external signal incident at the modulator, and means for detecting and processing each such return signal. The return signal comprises a portion of the interrogating light pulse which is coupled into the fiber in the second direction via evanescent coupling. The return signal from each modulator (or array of modulators) is identified via time division multiplexing. A signal processing means may be coupled to the fiber for generating a unique return signal from each of one or more modulator arrays, each array comprising a selected subset of the modulators.
