  • Patent number: 6435521
Abstract: A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver having a housing and a rotatable drive shaft extending therefrom is provided. The chuck includes a generally cylindrical body member having a nose section and a tail section. Each of a plurality of jaws is slidably positioned in one of a plurality of angularly disposed passageways in the body. Each jaw has a jaw face formed on one side thereof and threads formed on the opposite side thereof. A nut is rotatably mounted on the body in engagement with the jaw threads so that rotation of the nut moves the jaws axially within the passageways. A locking member, in a first axial position, is rotatable with respect to the driver housing. In a second axial position, it operatively engages the housing and the nut so that the locking member is rotationally held to the housing and the nut so that the nut is rotationally held to the housing. The locking member is axially reciprocal between the first axial position and the second axial position.

  • Patent number: 6428018
Abstract: A chuck includes a generally cylindrical body having a nose section and a tail section. A plurality of jaws are movably disposed with respect to the body to and away from the chuck's axial bore. A generally cylindrical sleeve is in driving communication with the jaws. The sleeve engages the body or the jaws by a first set of interengaged threads so that relative rotation between the first threads drives the jaws toward or away from the chuck axis. The sleeve engages the body or the jaws by a second set of interengaged threads so that relative rotation between the second threads drives the jaws toward or away from the chuck axis. The first thread set defines a first pitch so that when the jaws close, the first threads rotationally lock in the closing direction. The second thread set defines a second pitch that is higher than the first pitch so that when the jaws close, the second threads are relatively rotatable in the closing direction.

  • Patent number: 6409182
Abstract: A lathe chuck has a chuck body rotatable about an axis and having a plurality of angularly equispaced and axially forwardly open angled guides, a set of first jaws in some of the guides, and a set of second jaws in the other guides alternating with the first jaws. Respective first and second actuating plates coupled to the respective sets of jaws are axially displaceable to radially displace the jaws in the guides. An actuating shaft axially is displaceable in the body. A rocker connects the shaft with the plates for limited relative axial movement of the plates so that the first jaws can engage the workpiece before the second jaws. The actuating shaft has a tubular front end, a core shaft is axially connected to one of the plates and coaxially received in the actuating-shaft end, and a tube shaft is axially connected to the other of the plates and coaxially surrounds the actuating-shaft end. This actuating-shaft end in turn has a radially throughgoing hole through which the rocker extends.

  • Patent number: 6409436
Abstract: A plug ejecting hole saw includes a cylindrical saw cup provided with front cutting teeth, and an end wall having therethrough a non-circular concentric aperture; and an arbor holder removably attachable to a saw cup that includes a collar slidably holding a body including a nose piece, that has a cross-section which fits congruently within the aperture, and a pair of longitudinal grooves, which slidably hold locking tabs biased forward by springs to abut transverse ribs in the nose piece. The longitudinal grooves intersect a pair of transverse grooves blocked by the tabs. Inserting the nose piece into a cup aperture and pushing it forward causes each tab to be pushed rearward in a longitudinal groove, unblocking the transverse grooves and allowing the nose piece to be rotated relative to the saw cup, each tab springing forward to block a transverse groove and thereby lock the arbor holder to the sawcup.

  • Patent number: 6402160
Abstract: A chuck includes a generally cylindrical body, a plurality of jaws and a driving disk. A bearing includes a first race, a second race and a plurality of bearing elements disposed between the first race and the second race. The first race defines a plurality of recesses therein. One of the second race and the bearing elements is disposed in communication with the first race so that, when the jaws close onto a tool and the first race and the second race rotate relative to each other, the one of the second race and the bearing elements engages successive recesses.

  • Patent number: 6398226
Abstract: A chuck includes a generally elongated body having a tail section configured to rotate with the drive shaft and a nose section having an axial bore formed therein. A plurality of jaws are movably disposed with respect to the body to and away from the axial bore. A collar in axially driving engagement with the jaws is axially movably disposed with respect to the body so that movement in a first axial direction drives the jaws toward the axis and movement in the opposite direction moves the jaws away from the axis. The collar is configured to receive at least one of the body and a shaft and defines a first surface that faces a second surface defined by the body or the shaft when the same is received by the collar. The first surface is tapered in the axial direction from a first end to a second end of the fist surface so that a first radial distance between the second surface and the first end is less than a second radial distance between the second surface and the second end.

  • Patent number: 6398466
Abstract: A chuck 30 is formed with a generally cylindrical body 54 formed with a bore 60 at a forward end 58 thereof. A fixed clamp segment 134 and a movable clamp segment 166 are located in radial opposition in the bore 60. A pair of ribs 142 are formed on the fixed segment 134 and extend radially inward. A single rib 172 is formed on the movable segment 166 and extends radially inward. The ribs 142 and 172 cooperate to clamp a shank 42 therebetween in a clamping mode. A sleeve 78 is positioned about the body and is movable axially relative thereto. A camming section 88 formed on an interior wall of the sleeve 78 is captured between a head 124 of a pin 122 and a detent ring 132 to latch the sleeve in an unclamped mode. When the shank 42 is inserted into the bore 60, the forward end of the shank engages the pin 122 to move the head 124 against the camming section 88 which, in turn, moves the section past the detent ring.

  • Patent number: 6390481
Abstract: A chuck includes a generally cylindrical body and a plurality of jaws moveably disposed with respect to the body in communication with the body's axial bore. A generally cylindrical sleeve is rotatably mounted about the body in operative communication with the jaws so rotation of the sleeve in a closing direction moves the jaws towards the axis of the axial bore and rotation of the sleeve in an opening direction moves the jaws away from the axis. A bearing has a first race adjacent the body, a second race adjacent the sleeve and at least one bearing element disposed between the first race and the second race. One of the first race and the second race defines a ratchet. The other of the first race and the second race defines a pawl biased toward the ratchet. The ratchet and the pawl are configured so that when the pawl engages the ratchet, the ratchet and pawl prevent the second race from rotating in the opening direction with respect to the first race.

  • Patent number: 6382884
Abstract: The cutting tool for machining valve seats comprises a driving system, a machining head, a pilot, a depth gauge, and a system controller. The driving system provides rotational movement and vertical movement for the machining head which is controlled by the system controller. The machining head further comprises a pinion feed driving assembly and a universal cutting blade. The pinion feed driving assembly causes the cutting radius of the cutting tool to decrease as the machining head rotates. The pilot is attached to the bottom of the machining head to provide a means for centering the cutting tool. The depth gauge is disposed on the driving system and is electrically connected to the system controller. The depth gauge measures the distance between a valve seat and the cutting blade. The system controller includes memory and programming for controlling the operation of the cutting tool. An operator can input the parameters that define the geometry of the valve seat profile.
