  • Patent number: 6515984
Abstract: A data multiplexing network is described which multiplexes a plurality of asynchronous data channels with an asynchronous data stream representing compressed voice signals and/or facsimile signals onto a single synchronous data packet stream. The single synchronous data packet stream is then transmitted by a high speed statistical multiplexer over a composite link to a second site using a modified high-level synchronous data link control protocol with an overlay of a priority statistical multiplexing algorithm. The asynchronous data channels and the compressed voice channel and/or facsimile signals are demultiplexed and reconstructed for sending to other asynchronous computer terminals and to a standard telephone or facsimile analog port at the second site, respectively. PBX trunk interfaces are also provided to allow PBX's to share the composite link between sites. Communication between the first site by voice or facsimile and the second site is transparent to the users.

  • Patent number: 6515999
Abstract: A router is usable to transfer a packet from a first node belonging to one logical network to a second node belonging to another logical network. The router receives a first message for resource reservation from the second node, and stores a correspondence relationship between a first virtual connection available for receiving a packet of a specified flow from the first node and a second virtual connection available for transmitting the packet of the specified flow to the second node, when the first and second virtual connections exist. The router transmits a second message for resource reservation based on the first message to the first node, when the correspondence relationship can be stored. Alternatively, the router, after transmitting the second message to the first node irrespective of the correspondence relationship, transmits a cancellation message to the first node for canceling the second message depending upon whether the correspondence relationship can be stored.

  • Patent number: 6512742
Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for balanced transmitting of data across a link aggregation of k links in a network, where k is not a power of 2, where data is specified by frames each having a source address and a destination address. N bits of the source address and N bits of the destination address are determined to be XORed together where N is greater than 2. An index table with 2N entry positions is created where each of the entry positions is assigned an index number between 0 and 2N−1. The entry positions of the index table are filled with one link of the k links in each entry position by repetitively entering each of the k links until all of the entry positions are filled. The frames of data with identical source address and destination addresses as other frames of data are grouped into a flow. N bits of the source address are XORed together with N bits of the destination address for each flow to obtain an N bit index number for each flow.

  • Patent number: 6507566
Abstract: In a mobile communication system, the PAD of the data-processing-terminal-interface has a packet assembling/disassembling function for the protocol for data-link layer A and the protocol for data-link layer B. The protocol for data-link layer A of the data processing terminal prescribes that a frame, in which data transferred from the upper layer is inserted between flag sequences with a prescribed bit pattern, be transmitted usually, and that flag sequences without data transmission be transmitted when there is no data requiring transmission during communication. If flag sequences are transferred from the data processing terminal, the PAD deletes a part or all of the flag sequences and does not transfer them to the wireless communication unit. Consequently, a part or all of the flag sequences are not transmitted to the wireless communication channel. Therefore, power consumption by a wireless mobile station device or the like may be reduced, and the wireless channel may effectively used.

  • Patent number: 6504827
Abstract: The present invention is a method for efficiently utilizing spectrum resources belonging to a wireless communications system in the presence of data channels through a discontinuous data transmission technique. The discontinuous data transmission technique involves the transmission of a flag over a control channel (or some other communication channel) in frame f, wherein the flag would indicate to an intended recipient that a transmitter has a data frame to transmit to the recipient in some future frame f+q. In an embodiment, the transmitter would subsequently transmit the data frame over a data channel (or some other communication channel) in frame f+q if the flag indicated that the data frame was ready to be transmitted. In another embodiment, the transmitter would not transmit the data frame unless the recipient has indicated (via another flag) that the recipient is ready to receive the frame of data from the transmitter.

  • Patent number: 6501746
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for assigning an IP address to a mobile node during registration are disclosed. According to one aspect, a registration request is sent by a mobile node. A mobile node ID associated with the mobile node is obtained. A registration request packet is then composed. The registration request packet stores at least a portion of the mobile node ID in the registration request packet. The registration request packet is sent to a Home Agent associated with the mobile node. According to another aspect, a registration request packet is processed by a Home Agent. The Home Agent receives the registration request packet and ascertains whether the mobile node designated by the registration request packet needs an IP address. An IP address is assigned to the mobile node if it is ascertained that the mobile node needs an IP address. A registration reply specifying the IP address assigned to the mobile node is then composed.

  • Patent number: 6496491
Abstract: Apparatus for transferring packet data incorporates a “hand-off” feature that allows the transfer of an existing PPP connection from one packet server to another packet server. Such a hand-off control message or call continue transaction can be initiated by any of the servers involved in the transactions. For instance, assume an initial arrangement where a point-to-point call is set up and in progress between a user and a private network via a first packet server (e.g., a first Serving LAC) and a second packet server (e.g., an Anchor LAC). If, for example, the user moves out of the region served by the first packet server into a region served by a third packet server (e.g., a second Serving LAC), then a hand-off control message transaction, according to the invention, is initiated. Either the second Serving LAC or the Anchor LAC may initiate the call continue transaction.

  • Patent number: 6493317
Abstract: A technique is provided for routing traffic in an integrated services network which supports a plurality of different service classes including a relative low priority class (e.g. best-effort) and a relative high priority class (e.g. guaranteed sessions). The technique of the present invention improves inter-class resource sharing efficiency and achieves high network throughput of each class of service in the network. The technique discourages guaranteed (high priority) traffic from using links that are already loaded with best-effort (low priority) traffic. This is achieved by using, in the link cost for high priority traffic, a concept of “virtual residual bandwidth”, derived from the link residual bandwidth by taking into account of the congestion condition of low priority traffic. The proposed mechanism is simple in the sense that no changes are needed to the path selection algorithms employed for individual service classes the only change is in the link cost.

  • Patent number: 6490252
Abstract: A data traffic network 200 in which excess cells, or cells whose transfer is expected to cause the user to exceed the QoS traffic contract bandwidth limit, are transferred to a destination node 300b via an alternate or secondary network 212. More particularly, traffic received at a first ATM node 300a (for example, an end user node) is or has been classified according to traffic type, such as voice, data, or video (with their corresponding characteristics). Prior to packetizing the data streams into the ATM fixed length packets, the ATM node 300a, 600a determines whether the QoS traffic contract bandwidth limit has been exceeded or is likely to be exceeded. If so, then the corresponding traffic is transmitted to the destination node 300b via an appropriate alternate network 212. For example, voice traffic is transferred to a PBX and, ultimately, to the public switched telephone network (PSTN).
