Abstract: A determination whether to establish a new connection that will supply new variable bit rate data packets to be transmitted in a shared system for transmitting variable bit rate data packets is made by determining, for the new connection, a value of a moment generating function defined based on the number of possible data packet sizes for the new connection, (Ri, Pi) pairs representing possible new connection data packet sizes, Ri, with corresponding assigned probabilities, Pi, and &thgr; is an arbitrary positive real number. A determination is then made whether any value of &thgr; exists that satisfies the Chernoff bound for all established connections and the new connection, given a length of a buffer for storing data packets supplied to the shared system for transmitting variable bit rate data packets, and a predefined packet loss rate that can be tolerated in the shared system for transmitting variable bit rate data packets.
Abstract: A system and method to detect a call trigger during a call without requiring a service platform to remain connected to the call. A first communication device transmits a call having call signaling and user communications. A signaling processor receives the call signaling from the first communication device and selects a connection to a second communication device. An interworking unit receives the user communications from the first communication device and converts the user communications from a time division multiplex format to asynchronous transfer mode cells that identify a selected connection to the second communication device and transports the user communications to the second communication device. The interworking unit detects a call trigger in the user communications. The interworking unit transmits call trigger data to the signaling processor.

Abstract: Unicast endpoint clients (110, 111, 115) on an IP Unicast network (107, 108) are provided access to Multicast sessions on an IP Multicast network (101) through a Multicast-Unicast gateway server (120, 121). The server obtains information about sessions on the Multicast network and makes such information available to a Unicast client on the Unicast network upon request by the client. Upon being presented with a list describing the subject matter of each session, the user at the Unicast client selects the session to which he or she wants to join, which causes the Multicast-Unicast server to join the appropriate session on behalf of the requesting client for each media type in which the joining client wants to be a participant. The server then sets a bidirectional Unicast User Datagram Protocol (UDP) stream between itself and the client. All packets then received by the server from the Unicast client are address-translated to the appropriate Multicast session address.
Abstract: A multi-service integrated hardware circuit (20) transmits cells between an external interface (62) and plural on-board service devices (701, 702, 72, and 74) handling differing telecommunication services. The on-board service devices include one or more ATMF transceivers (701, 702), a Utopia 2 level device (74), and a circuit emulator (72) which interfaces with one of a PCM interface (301, 302) and an E1 or TI interface (32). The multi-service circuit comprises a multiplexer/demultiplexer core (60) which connects to the external interface (62) and which connects via an internal interface (64) to the plural service devices. In the illustrated embodiments, the external interface (62) and internal interlace (64) are Utopia level 2 interfaces.
Abstract: A system is provided for determining a plurality of minimally-overlapping paths between a source node and a destination node in a network. The system determines a first path between the source node and the destination node. Additionally, a second path between the source node and the destination node is determined. If the first path and the second path overlap, the system modifies at least one path to minimize the overlap of the paths. Both the first path and the second path contain a plurality of path elements in which the path elements including nodes and links between nodes such that a cost is assigned to both nodes and links. After the paths are identified, a first circuit is established between the source and destination nodes along the first path and a second circuit is established between the source and destination nodes along the second path.
Abstract: A communication control apparatus according to the present invention has receive means and own terminal identifier setting means. The receive means receives terminal ID information having information of one or more terminal identifiers transmitted from one or more terminals with which communication is being held. The own terminal identifier setting means sets a terminal identifier among a plurality of terminal identifiers which are other than the terminals of the other terminals obtained from all terminal ID information items received from the receive means, which have been previously set and which can be used for the communication.
Abstract: When establishing a virtual connection, a pair of identifiers VPI-VCI of Lp+Lc bits is adopted, and data (Id_Cx) relating to said virtual connection is stored in a table in relation to its identifier pair. At the arrival of each ATM cell whose header includes the identifier pair of one of the virtual connections, the data relating to said virtual connection is read from the table. The table includes p.2m storage areas organized as 2m rows and p columns. The data relating to a virtual connection are stored in an area of the table whose row is labelled by an m-bit index calculated by applying a systematic cyclic code, having a generating polynomial of degree m, to a binary word extracted from a sequence of Lp+Lc bits which consists of the bits of one of the identifiers arranged in order of decreasing significance, followed by the bits of the other identifier arranged in order of increasing significance.
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for communicating audio information over a computer network. A standard telephone connected to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) may be used to communicate with any other PSTN-connected telephone, where a computer network, such as the Internet, is the transmission facility instead of conventional telephone transmission facilities, such as the interexchange or intralata facilities. In addition to telephone-telephone communication, telephone-computer and computer-telephone communication is also possible. The originator of a conversation (calling party) dials the number of an access port for the computer network. The call is routed to a central office switching system which is connected to the PSTN and then to the access port which is a specialized computer system (ITS node).
Abstract: In a packet data transmission digital network, a data receiver node dispatches to an adjacent data sender node packets of credits containing information about its capacity to receive data packets; the sender dispatches the data packets which it needs to transmit so long as it has sufficient credits; when its credits are exhausted, it continues to dispatch, in advance, the waiting data packets and preserves each data packet sent in advance until reception thereof is confirmed by the arrival of specific packets originating from the receiver; the receiver dispatches to the sender information indicating the lost data packets; the sender retransmits the data packets whose loss has been signalled by the receiver and destroys the data packets which were sent in advance and preceding the lost data packets.
Abstract: An ATM switching node (20) which implements PNNI protocol has a table (known as the consolidated table) which stores plural records, each record associating a connection request input field with corresponding routing information. The node has table maintenance logic (78) which updates the table to consolidate therein both records initiated by operator input and records developed from PNNI updating information. The PNNI updating information is generated by a PNNI protocol unit (56) which consults a topology database of the node. Provision of the consolidate table obviates consultation of multiple tables.
Abstract: CDMA communication over multiple channels by phase shifting at baseband and then RF modulating without a phase shift. Total number of baseband filters is reduced by summing channel components prior to baseband filtering.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for spatial multiplexing and demultiplexing of radio signals. A multichannel transmitter and receiver is integrated in a base station and coupled to an antenna array. Using digital radio signals containing previously known or non-Gaussian sequences and arranged in frames, the spatial information about each mobile unit is estimated on the basis of the signal received by the receiver for the reception and transmission frequencies. This is done by known sequences or by blind source separation methods. The respective paths of each mobile unit with the power above a predetermined threshold is isolated by spatial filtering in the presence of multiple channel paths in order to provide spatial demultiplexing.
Abstract: AAL2 mini packets are integrated directly onto the physical layer to provide serial data transmission using statistical multiplexing. This can be achieved by generating a plurality of frames of a predetermined size. A plurality of AAL2 variable length mini packets are then statistically multiplexed onto the plurality of frames. A pointer field is then inserted into each of the frames. The pointer field includes a pointer that delineates the starting place of the next full packet in the frame that includes the pointer field, a framing bit that forms a pattern with other framing bits, and a parity bit. The frames are then transmitted over a serial transmission line.
Abstract: The present invention provides a wireless telecommunications system comprising an interface mechanism for establishing a wireless link between a central terminal and a subscriber terminal within said wireless telecommunications system. The interface mechanism comprises a radio port manager within the central terminal for configuring the central terminal to receive an acquisition request message from a subscriber terminal on a radio slot associated with the radio port manager, and a radio port slave within the subscriber terminal for receiving an invitation message inviting the subscriber terminal to acquire the wireless link on said radio slot, and for issuing the acquisition request message to said radio port manager. The radio port manager is responsive to receiving the acquisition request message to grant the subscriber terminal access to the radio slot.

Abstract: Method and system for tracking transient errors and controlling data traffic in a high speed packet switching network node. The traffic exits each node through a transmit queue per connection between end users.
The queue is monitored at both queue level through a threshold based mechanism (53) and a control of time activity mechanism (55). If trouble is detected by any one of these mechanisms, the queue packet admission is momentarily barred. To that end, a Line Resources Manager (LRM) provides queue threshold and time-out references and keeps monitoring the node global buffering memory available. If required, the LRM may also report to Network Management facilities for possible rerouting of the traffic.
