  • Patent number: 4846950
Abstract: Method and apparatus for cyclic control of both potential and current in electrolysis, called Cyclic, Controlled-potential, controlled current Electrolysis. The method can be used with a two-electrode cell (W and C), or a three-electrode set-up using a reference electrode R to form two half cells. The method involves supplying a controlled current, preferably a constant current, to the W and C electrodes to operate the electrolysis within well-defined upper and lower potential limits. In a first embodiment (called the constant-current, preset-voltage mode), when a predetermined voltage is reached, the current is reversed until a second predetermined voltage is reached. The cycle is then repeated continously. In a second embodiment (called the preset-voltage, preset-time mode) the current is maintained constant until the predetermined voltage is reached. Then the voltage is maintained constant by reducing the current until a predetermined time of operation has elapsed.

  • Patent number: 4842708
Abstract: A magnetic recording medium conventionally utilizes the in-plane magnetization mode, but recently the perpendicular magnetization mode utilizing the perpendicular anisotropy of an hcp cobalt alloy layer, in which the C axis is oriented perpendicular to the layer surface, has been proposed. The known perpendicular magnetic recording medium is produced by means of RF sputtering and comprises a Permalloy layer, as layer of a low coercive-force material, between the nonmagnetic base and the hcp cobalt alloy layer. The perpendicular anisotropy attained by the present invention in very excellent and is superior to that of a perpendicular recording medium having no Permalloy layer because a Co-Ta alloy is used as the layer of a low coercive-force material.

  • Patent number: 4840816
Abstract: A method for fabricating high-quality optical waveguides in optical quality oxide crystals by ion implantation doping and controlled epitaxial recrystallization is provided. Masked LiNbO.sub.3 crystals are implanted with high concentrations of Ti dopant at ion energies of about 350 keV while maintaining the crystal near liquid nitrogen temperature. Ion implantation doping produces an amorphous, Ti-rich nonequilibrium phase in the implanted region. Subsequent thermal annealing in a water-saturated oxygen atmosphere at up to 1000.degree. C. produces solid-phase epitaxial regrowth onto the crystalline substrate. A high-quality single crystalline layer results which incorporates the Ti into the crystal structure at much higher concentrations than is possible by standard diffusion techniques, and this implanted region has excellent optical waveguides properties.
