  • Patent number: 4616392
Abstract: A bladder mandrel utilizing a sleeve of Pellethane.RTM. to effect tube expansions is disclosed herein. The sleeve which forms the bladder of the mandrel terminates in sealing beads which include fluid-capturing recesses. When the beads of the sleeve are secured within grooves provided in the mandrel body, pressurized fluid flowing through the fluid port of the mandrel enters the fluid-capturing recesses of the beads and sealingly engages these beads within their respective grooves. The sleeve consequently fills with the pressurized fluid, and effects the desired tube expansion. The walls of the sleeve are thinnest at their center portion, and become progressively thicker toward the sealing beads. The use of a Pellethane.RTM. sleeve having a centrally disposed thin-walled section results in a bladder mandrel having a relatively small outer diameter, which in turn allows it to be inserted within a tube without the need for lubricants.

  • Patent number: 4613000
Abstract: A powered fastening tool described herein is useful to align and secure structural members to each other, the structural members having misaligned securing apertures. To accomodate this misalignment two eccentric bushings are nested and swaged together to be inserted into one of the misaligned apertures to be turned therein by the powered tool until an alignment is reached. The tool holds a fastener while concurrently rotating each eccentric bushing at an independent rate until hole alignment is achieved. At this point, the tool inserts the fastener through the hole in the lower structure and is then used to rotate the fastener into threaded engagement.

  • Patent number: 4603462
Abstract: A joining jig for use in joining automotive vehicle body outer panels is composed of first and second contact members whose contact surfaces are contactable respectively with inside and outside faces of a joint section of the body panels. Both the contact members are so biased that their contact surfaces contact with the corresponding faces of the joint section under the action of a relatively high biasing force, when a brazing operation is carried out. An additional biasing device is provided for lightly biasing the first and second contact members so that their contact surfaces contact with the corresponding faces of the joint section under the action of a relatively low biasing force, prior to the biasing under the action of the relatively high biasing force, thereby enabling a precise location of the joining jig contact surfaces relative to the joint section.

  • Patent number: 4582297
Abstract: A cable is pulled in a duct or along an overhead support line according to a method and through the use of a tape comprised of warp and weft threads. Indicia printed on the web is used to indicate the length of the course of travel for the cable along which the web extends. The width of the web is sufficient to affix indicia on the surface thereof. The web has an elongation of 10% or less at a break strength which is in excess of 750 pounds of pull force. The pull strength of the woven web is about 2900-3000 pounds. The web is comprised of strands of parallel filaments of yarn consisting of aromatic polyamide fibers. Insulated conductors are incorporated in the tape as two of many warp threads according to a second tape embodiment for conducting a tension signal along the tape. After a length of the course of travel is measured with the tape, one end of the tape is connected to the leading end of a cable while the remaining end of the tape is connected to a winch.

  • Patent number: 4576362
Abstract: A fiber optic cable pulling method includes a series of large-diameter capstan winches placed at intermediate access points along the conduit through which the fiber optic cable is to be pulled. Each capstan winch pulls a portion of the cable through a segment of the conduit at a substantially uniform velocity. The capstan wheel of each winch is sized frictionally to engage the cable without exceeding its minimum bending radius. The winches are independently controlled by controllers which limit the rate of hydraulic fluid and its pressure flowing to the hydraulically powered winch, and thereby maintain pulling tension on each portion of the cable below a predetermined tension, if exceeded, which could damage the fiber optics in the cable. The capstan winches are spaced sufficiently close together so that the pulling tension necessary to pull a portion of cable through each conduit segment is ordinarily less than the tension provided by the capstan winches.
