  • Patent number: 7513138
Abstract: A single action press for forming a shell used to make a can end includes a first tool and an opposed second tool. The first tool includes a die center insert that performs a forming operation on disc cut from a sheet of end material. The first tool is configured and arranged wherein force is supplied to the die center insert during the downstroke and force is removed from the die center insert at the bottom of the downstroke and at the start of the upstroke, to thereby enable the die center insert to disengage from the shell. One specific embodiment uses a die center piston and compressed air to apply force to the die center insert. Another embodiment uses a cam and cam follower arrangement to remove axial forces at the bottom of the downstroke and either springs or gas pressure to apply force to the die center insert during the downstroke.

  • Patent number: 7506527
Abstract: A method and apparatus for automatically separating blanks from a copper strip (200) and coining heat spreader lids (400) from the blanks. A high speed blanking structure (208) severs single rectangular or square blanks (212) from the copper strip. The blanks are loaded into a cartridge (214), and placed in a blanks hopper (213). The blanks are transferred from the hopper to a rotatable turret (217). The turret rotates to move a blank to a coining die cavity of a coining press (305). The blank is coined to form a lid and returned to the turret to be delivered to an unload station where the lid is dropped onto a conveyor (310). The conveyor transports the lid to a deburr and clean station (610).

  • Patent number: 7503201
Abstract: A hand tool comprising first and second jaw members and first and second handle members, the first handle and both jaw members being cooperatively connected by a force multiplying linkage system. A force applied to the first handle drives the linkage system to close the jaws to crimp or cut a work piece. In one embodiment of the invention, a link in the linkage system has a first end movable between first and second positions relative to its first end pivot pin wherein the first and second jaw members close a first distance when the link first end is in the first position and close a second distance when the link first end is in the second position. Other embodiments comprise other step-wise changes in distance between force-bearing pivot locations in the linkage system to close the jaws progressive distances with successive closures of the first and second handles.

  • Patent number: 7481093
Abstract: A method and assembly for punching a hole in material provided. A magnetostrictive device 14 includes a coil 26, a magnetostrictive member 22, and a punch 28 operatively associated with the magnetostrictive member 22. The magnetostrictive member 22 is constructed and arranged to lengthen, when exposed to a magnetic field created by the coil 26, thereby moving the punch 28. Material 12 to be punched is associated with the punch 28. The coil is energized to create a magnetic field and thus lengthen the magnetostrictive member 22 so that the punch 28 moves through the material 12, creating a hole in the material 12.

  • Patent number: 7475585
Abstract: A security slug punch tool is disclosed. A typical application includes protecting curb box cover assemblies employed on catch basins along thoroughfares. The hand held tool houses a first cylinder extending beyond one end of the tool affixed to a smaller diameter cylinder drive pin. A deformable slug is secured within an elastomeric grommet at one end of the tool. An operator forcibly striking the first cylinder causes the slug to be wedged into a face opening in a bolt head, as, for example, a hexagonal opening in a bolt securing a curb box cover assembly, thereby rendering the bolt tamper proof. The punch tool and slug can be configured for securing a variety of bolts with different face openings.
