  • Patent number: 6522871
Abstract: The frequency error of an oscillator is minimized by characterizing the operating environment of the oscillator. An electronic device monitors parameters that are determined to have an effect on the frequency accuracy of the internal frequency source. Temperature is one parameter known to have an effect on the frequency of the internal frequency source and a primary contributor to device temperature is the RF Power Amplifier (PA). The electronic device collects and stores the activity level of the PA. The effective PA duty cycle over a predetermined period of time is calculated. The LO operating environment is stabilized by operating the PA at the calculated duty cycle when the LO is required to operate in a high stability mode.

  • Patent number: 6522889
Abstract: A method and apparatus for obtaining information about an object through interaction between a mobile station (MS) and a computer network such as the Internet, and communicating the information to the MS. A digital camera obtains an image of an object, such as a geographic region proximate the MS, which is then transmitted through the mobile communications system to the computer network. A converter server such as an Optical Character Reader (OCR) server interfaced with the global computer network converts the digital image to a text format which is then compared, along with a general location identifier of the MS to geographic data stored in a location database connected to the global computer network. Based on a comparison of the converted text data and the general location identifier of the MS to the geographic data stored in the location server, a precise location of the MS is determined and transmitted to the MS.

  • Patent number: 6522892
Abstract: In a radio, a signal is transmitted through a control channel or a call channel by use of one transmitting circuit, and the transmission output of the call channel is intentionally changed. At the time of transmission of a signal through the control channel, a closed loop is formed in order to feed back a detection output value of the transmission output of the control channel to a transmission output control section, thereby controlling the transmission output of the control channel. In contrast, at the time of transmission of a signal through the call channel, the closed loop is canceled, thereby controlling the transmission output of the call channel.

  • Patent number: 6519460
Abstract: A method and apparatus are described for applying a narrow band FH link for low-rate and medium-rate communications, and a stationary wide band channel for high-speed (HS) communications. A master and one or more slaves sharing the same FH link may form a piconet. Master and slaves may hop synchronously according to a pseudo-random hop sequence. A master may control traffic on the FH link. An HS link can be established between a master and one or more slaves or between two slaves. An appropriate band of the radio spectrum is selected adaptively based on lowest RSSI measurements both in master and slave to establish the HS link without making use of a hopping scheme. A master shares its time between the HS slave on the HS link and the slaves remaining on the FH link using Time Division multiplexing. If the HS link uses a part of the band over which the piconet hops, the master controls the traffic such that the HS link is never visited by the FH link.

  • Patent number: 6519456
Abstract: A base station architecture splits modem functionality into modulator and demodulator entities, each configured to handle multiple telephone calls. A high-speed digital bus with associated routing elements connects multiple-channel (i.e., multiuser) modulator and demodulator elements. The modulator and demodulator elements may be physically separated, residing on different cards, and even different shelves, within the base station. During softer handoff between forward channels of the base station, multiple modulator elements use the address of a demodulator element in communication with a mobile subscriber unit. A base station controller broadcasts forward-link frames to all modulator elements. The multiple modulator elements simultaneously receive forward-link frames from the base station controller. The multiple modulator elements filter these forward-link frames and accept only those to be transmitted to the particular mobile subscriber unit in communication with the demodulator element.

  • Patent number: 6519465
Abstract: The accuracy of the location estimate of a Wireless Location System is dependent, in part, upon both the transmitted power of the wireless transmitter and the length in time of the transmission from the wireless transmitter. In general, higher power transmissions and transmissions of greater transmission length can be located with better accuracy by the Wireless Location System than lower power and shorter transmissions. Wireless communications systems generally limit the transmit power and transmission length of wireless transmitters in order to minimize interference within the communications system and to maximize the potential capacity of the system. The inventive method disclosed herein meets the conflicting needs of both systems by enabling the wireless communications system to minimize transmit power and length while enabling improved location accuracy for certain types of calls, such as wireless 9-1-1 calls.
