  • Patent number: 6560441
Abstract: A solution for providing an improved fading margin environment for in-building wireless coverage. An optical fiber or other available broadband signal distribution network is used to distribute signals between centrally located base transceiver station (BTS) equipment and remotely located transceiver equipment referred to herein as a cable microcell integrator (CMI). The CMIs are deployed in a configuration to provide radio frequency coverage in a desired microcell area such as a building floor. In a preferred embodiment, a leaky coaxial cable is used as a radiating element within the microcell.

  • Patent number: 6556845
Abstract: A multiplication circuit 152 multiplies signals, which are subjected to variable directional transmission, by weighting factors with respect to the respective antennas 101 to 103, and outputs the resultant to combining circuits 155 to 157, respectively. The signals input to the combining circuit 155 are combined and radio modulated by a radio section 104, and transmitted from the antenna 101. Whereby, in a case where variable directional transmission is performed with respect to only some terminal apparatuses, signals, which are subjected to no variable directional transmission, can be transmitted after spreading them from the respective antennas of an array antenna.

  • Patent number: 6556824
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, facilitates service degradation in a radio communication system, such as a cellular communication system. A service degradation profile is created, associated with a particular communication service-type, and includes values of QoS (quality of service) level values. If communication at levels corresponding to the values of the desired QoS level parameters is unavailable, efforts are made to effectuate, or maintain communication at quality levels corresponding to values of at least first QoS level parameters values. Service degradation thereby occurs pursuant to a selected profile, reducing the need for service renegotiations and reducing the possibility that an abrupt termination of a communication session might occur.

  • Patent number: 6556582
Abstract: A first wireless node provides a method of avoiding multiple access collision in a wireless network. The system receives a request to send data from a second wireless node (405) and determines if the system is receiving data from a third node (410). The system transmits a non-authorization message if the system is receiving data from the third node (415). If, however, the system is not receiving data from the third node, the system transmits an authorization message to the first wireless node (420). The system receives data from the second node in response to the authorization message (425) and then transmits an acknowledgment message to the second node acknowledging receipt of the data (435).

  • Patent number: 6556834
Abstract: In idle handover control, the reception quality of a synchronized pilot channel is classified into quality class “1” with which data can be received without any error, quality class “2” with which data can be received within an allowable error range, or quality class “3” with which data is difficult to receive with high quality, and different thresholds, i.e., 6 dB, 4 dB, and 2 dB, are respectively set for these quality classes. It is checked whether the reception quality of another pilot channel as a synchronization establishment candidate is higher than that of the synchronized pilot channel by a threshold corresponding to a quality class into which the synchronized pilot channel is classified or more. If it is determined that the reception quality of the synchronization establishment candidate is higher by the threshold or more, handover processing is performed. Otherwise, synchronization with the synchronized pilot channel is maintained without handover processing.

  • Patent number: 6556839
Abstract: A reversely spreading unit 11 reversely spreads a digitally converted reception signal by using an assigned spreading code. A reception power and interference power measuring unit 14 calculates a reception power from a mobile station and/or an interference power. A total reception power calculator 3 calculates a total reception power that is a sum of reception signals of respective channels received at one reception antenna 6. Also, an SIR calculator 15 uses the total reception power, and the reception power from the mobile station and/or the interference power, and then calculating a signal to interference ratio (SIR) of the reception signal. A transmission power control information calculator 16 calculates a transmission power control information so that SIR of the reception signal approaches a necessary SIR.

  • Patent number: 6553212
Abstract: A method and apparatus for improving loop stability and speed of a power control loop. Adjacent channel interference in the ramp-up and ramp-down (transient) of a TDMA burst is reduced. The present invention is used in a burst when the transient response and loop speed are important in the design of the control loop. The loop bandwidth variation resulting from linear conversion power detector and PIN diode RF attenuators in the loop is reduced by reducing the upper end of the loop bandwidth and increasing the lower end of the loop bandwidth. The upper limit of the loop bandwidth determines the loop stability and the lower limit of the loop bandwidth determines the minimum speed of the loop. A reference signal is sampled and processed to set a gain of a feedback loop in the power control loop.

  • Patent number: 6553234
Abstract: Fixed access wireless networks generally includes a grouping of cells, with each cell comprising a base transceiver station in radio frequency contact with a plurality of terminal stations. Such networks are typically assigned a limited number of frequencies to facilitate data transfer. Various techniques are used to maximize the amount of data which can be transferred including polarization, modulation and frequency reuse. A Local Multi-point Distribution System (LMDS) is a form of fixed wireless network, a notable feature of which are the directional nature of their terminal station antennae. The present invention provides a method of assigning frequencies to an LMDS, by exploiting the directivity of the fixed terminal station antennae. Each cell is divided into an even number of at least four sectors. Given a desired carrier to interference ratio, the cells are grouped into clusters, the cluster size defining the interference boundary for a given cell in the cluster.

  • Patent number: 6549765
Abstract: A method and apparatus for synthesizing high-frequency signals, such as wireless communication signals, includes a phase-locked loop (PLL) frequency synthesizer with a variable capacitance voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) that has a discretely variable capacitance in conjunction with a continuously variable capacitance. The discretely variable capacitance may provide coarse tuning adjustment of the variable capacitance to compensate for capacitor and inductor tolerances and to adjust the output frequency to be near the desired frequency output. The continuously variable capacitance may provide a fine tuning adjustment of the variable capacitance to focus the output frequency to match precisely the desired frequency output. During fine tuning adjustment, the PLL may be controlled by a plurality of analog control signals. The analog control signals may be derived by first generating a plurality of phase shifted signals from a divided version of the VCO output clock.

  • Patent number: 6549767
Abstract: In a telephony terminal apparatus for exchanging a message with the other party through a telephone line, a memory section memorizes sound data representing a sound message composed of either of a voice sound and a music sound. A selector section selects mode information effective to specify a mode of exchanging a message. A transmitter section transmits the memorized sound data to the other party together with the selected mode information, thereby enabling the other party to receive the transmitted sound data and to reproduce therefrom the sound message according to the specified mode. The selector section may select a realtime mode effective to enable the other party to receive the sound data and to process the received sound data in realtime to automatically reproduce the sound message as a ringing sound to notify a call termination.

  • Patent number: 6549768
Abstract: A wireless communications network comprises a server in a central location storing matching profiles for a plurality of users of the network. The matching profile for each user is stored in the server through the user's mobile unit or a secure page on the Internet. Each matching profile is corresponded with a respective mobile unit using the same identification information (ID) of the respective mobile unit utilized for carrying out phone calls. The server has a customizable variable matching algorithm and probes the matching profiles corresponding to the respective mobile units in a cell or group of cells for a match every time a new mobile unit subscribes into the cell or group of cells. When there is a match of matching profiles, the two persons are put in contact or advised of each other through a phone call or other communications method.
