  • Patent number: 7233296
Abstract: A method for improving the efficiency of antennas having transparent thin-film conductive surfaces, and antennas improved by the method are disclosed. For a selected frequency of antenna operation, values for surface current density in areas distributed over the surface of the thin-film are determined. Regions of the surface containing areas having concentrated current flow are identified based upon the determined values of current density. Antenna efficiency is improved by increasing conductivity in areas of the thin-film surface found to have concentrated current flow. The method enables the improvement of the efficiency of antennas having transparent thin-film conducting surfaces, without unnecessarily obstructing the optical view through the thin-film surfaces of the antennas.

  • Patent number: 7230574
Abstract: An oriented PIFA-type apparatus for reducing hearing aid radio frequency (RF) interference including a directional multi-band and/or single band antenna for use with PWDs such as digital cellphones is disclosed. The apparatus greatly reduces or eliminates the audio noise induced in hearing aids by the PWDs and allows operation of a hearing aid during PWD operation. In operation, the apparatus may be provided on the PWD side away from the user's head. The apparatus may be integrated into the PWB during its manufacture or provided as an after market assembly for a PWD that has a port for connection of an external antenna. The apparatus provides for improved front-to-back ratio as compared to antennas currently in use on PWD's, and therefore also reduces SAR (specific absorption rate), the level of RF energy received into the head by a PWD.

  • Patent number: 7230573
Abstract: A dual-band antenna (1) for communication device includes a first radiating element portion (10) operating at a first frequency band, a second radiating element portion (20) operating at a second frequency band, an L-shaped ground portion (40), a conductive connection (50) interconnecting the first and second radiating element portions (10, 20) with the ground portion (40) and a slot (101) served as an impedance transformer and positioned on the ground portion (40). The slot (101) is implemented as a capacitive load that eliminates the inductive part of the input impedance of the antenna, thereby the slot (101) can match the input impedance of the antenna with a feed line.

  • Patent number: 7230384
Abstract: Apparatus and methods provide a robust radio frequency (RF) interface for a helix-type traveling wave tube (TWT). As a vacuum device, the RF input to the TWT and the RF output from the TWT are sealed to maintain the vacuum. The disclosed robust RF interface techniques are advantageously less prone to breakage than conventional sealing techniques. In addition, configurations of the disclosed robust RF interface techniques can further exhibit relatively good impedance matches between a TWT and an associated antenna, which can reduce insertion losses and reflection losses, thereby advantageously increasing system RF output power.

  • Patent number: 7224318
Abstract: A planar antenna has a radiating element and a ground plate. A body of a vehicle has an internal edge that is formed by making a hole in the body. The planar antenna is located in the hole so that an imaginary plane of the internal edge is located between the radiating element and the ground plate. In such a structure, electric lines of force perpendicularly pass through the body beside the planar antenna. As a result, electric fields are maintained in the vertical direction even if the planar antenna is mounted on the vehicle. This maintains a horizontal directivity of the planar antenna.

  • Patent number: 7215287
Abstract: The present invention relates generally to a new family of antennas with a multiband behaviour, so that the frequency bands of the antenna can be tuned simultaneously to the main existing wireless services. In particular, the invention consists of shaping at least one of the gaps between some of the polygons of the multilevel structure in the form of a non-straight curve, shaped in such a way that the whole gap length is increased yet keeping its size and the same overall antenna size. Such a configuration allows an effective tuning of the frequency bands of the antenna, such that with the same overall antenna size, said antenna can be effectively tuned simultaneously to some specific services, such as for instance the five frequency bands that cover the services AMPS, GSM900, GSM1800, PCS1900, UMTS, Bluetooth™, IEEE802.11b, or HyperLAN.
