  • Patent number: 6993359
Abstract: A communication system formed by a private wireless network that can be used with public wireless networks using a public wireless protocol, such as GSM, and typically includes public networks, such as PSTN, ISDN and the Internet, using a wired-packet protocol, such as IP. The private network also typically includes a local area network (LAN) and the private network typically connects to the public networks using the wired-packet protocol, such as IP. The public and private wireless networks operate with the same public wireless protocol, such as GSM, and the private wireless network additionally operates with the wired-packet protocol, such as IP. In this environment, multiple wireless cells are present and inter-cell handovers employ multiple protocols including the wired-packet protocol.

  • Patent number: 6983166
Abstract: Techniques to more efficiently control the transmit power for a data transmission that uses a number of formats (e.g., rates, transport formats). Different formats for a given data channel (e.g., transport channel) may require different target SNIRs to achieved a particular BLER. In one aspect, individual target BLER may be specified for each format of each data channel. In another aspect, various power control schemes are provided to achieve different target SNIRs for different formats. In a first power control scheme, multiple individual outer loops are maintained for multiple formats. For each format, its associated outer loop attempts to set the target SNIR such that the target BLER specified for that format is achieved. In a second power control scheme, multiple individual outer loops are maintained and the base station further applies different adjustments to the transmit power levels for different formats.

  • Patent number: 6980817
Abstract: A method for providing a local cordless-type service comprises the steps of receiving subscriber neighborhood zone selection input so that a mobile telephone equipped subscriber may place or receive calls for a fixed rate, for example, per month without having to pay radio frequency air time charges any time they are located within their selected subscribed-to zones. If the subscribed-to zones are adjacent to one another and the mobile subscriber roams from one zone to another, the subscriber may continue their free call uninterrupted and without paying air time charges. However, when the subscriber roams outside their subscribed-to zones they may be switched from the present local cordless-type services to conventional personal communications services and pay air time charges. However for an active call, no air-time charges are incurred as the user transitions between the cellular/DPCS environment and the local cordless service environment.

  • Patent number: 6980823
Abstract: Various techniques for improving a wireless communication device are described. The techniques may include reducing power in a wireless communication device for a first sleep period and then increasing power in the wireless communication device for an intermediate wake period after the first sleep period to estimate an error of the sleep clock. The method may further include reducing power in the wireless communication device for a second sleep period after the intermediate wake period. The intermediate wake mode implemented during the intermediate period can be used to estimate the error of the sleep clock without performing one or more tasks associated with an awake mode, such as demodulation. The techniques may facilitate the effective use of low frequency low power clocks for sleep mode, even when relatively large slot cycles are defined within a slotted paging system.

  • Patent number: 6961571
Abstract: In a radio access network, a SRNC relocation procedure (100, 100?) is performed for relocating a role of a serving radio network controller (SRNC) for a telecommunications service involving a user equipment unit (UE) from a first radio network controller (261) to a second radio network controller (262). In accordance various modes of the SRNC relocation procedure, the first radio network controller signals to the second radio network controller information for linking transport channels utilized for the service with a radio access bearer (RAB) for the service. In a first mode of the invention, the signaling links a dedicated transport channel (DCH) utilized for the service with a radio access bearer (RAB) for the service. In second through fourth modes of the invention, during the SRNC relocation procedure the signaling links uplink and downlink transport channel (TrCH) IDs with the radio access bearer (RAB) identifier.

  • Patent number: 6954619
Abstract: Described is a method and system for increasing the spectrum efficiency in a radio transmission system. Advantageously, the interference phenomenon is used for transmitting two different signals, by utilizing for each of them carriers at the same frequency, thus obtaining in this way a doubling of the spectrum efficiency. Practically, the same signal is transmitted by two different antennas in order to have two coherent signal sources. On the receiving front, there are points of maximum and minimum of this signal. If the original signal is properly phase shifted with an antenna vis-à-vis the other one, the effect will be to arrange the maxima and minima on the receiving front in a corresponding way. The present invention allows for the use of dual polarization antennas (H and V or any other type of orthogonal polarization) to obtain a still higher spectrum efficiency.

  • Patent number: 6934538
Abstract: A portable telephone radio unit is disclosed which allows a user to recognize an incomplete state of data communication which occurs with a terminal equipment because of deterioration of the communication state by radio wave interference upon channel changing over in the course of a standby channel selection operation or during communication. A signal processing section performs information analysis of a signal selected by a control circuit section from among reception signals of an antenna whose levels are measured by a radio circuit section upon channel changing over in the course of a standby channel selection operation or during communication. The control circuit section detects loss of frame synchronization, deterioration in bit error rate, unfavorable reception of broadcast information or interruption of radio waves which is a condition of radio wave interference.
