Abstract: A method to remotely determine a location of a mobile unit without intervention by a user of the mobile unit is provided. The mobile unit may receive a location query, download location data from a GPS, and transmit the location data via a wireless telecommunications network. For example, a call center may initiate a location query using a voice channel call to the mobile unit. In addition, the mobile unit may select a mode of communication from a number of alternative modes of digital wireless communication based upon a determined characteristic of the transmission mode. By way of example, the determined characteristic could be a transmission speed, cost of transmission, or signal strength of the selected communication mode. Furthermore, the unit may be a battery pack or other accessory device attachable to a wireless telephone handset, or integrated within a mobile unit.

Abstract: Techniques are described for providing location-based information and functionality to people and computing devices in various ways. In at least some situations, the techniques include enabling multiple people in a common geographic area to interact in various ways, such as via devices capable of communications (e.g., cellular telephones, computing devices with wired and/or wireless communications capabilities, etc.). In addition, the techniques include enabling the creation and maintenance of location-based virtual groups of users (also referred to as “clouds”), such as for users of mobile and/or fixed-location devices. Such clouds may enable various types of interactions between group members, and may be temporary and/or mobile.
Abstract: The task of configuring a thin client device for networking functionality and connectivity is simplified using a portable computer-readable media device to transfer and automatically load RF interference data into a provisioning device. A wireless radio frequency channel that is usable for the wireless protocol to be employed by the device and which is not currently experiencing prohibitive RF interference is selected by the provisioning device based on the interference data. The portable media device includes, in an embodiment of the invention, a spectrum chip and its support electronics such as a radio receiver and receive-chain processor, to analyze ongoing local RF emissions/transmissions to identify a channel having the least interference.
Abstract: A virtualized Open Wireless Architecture (OWA) layer is designed between the physical transmission layer and the user application and operating system (OS) layers to provide a converged open radio transmission platform, and provide a solution to make the application and OS layers to be totally independent to the wireless transmission layer. The OWA virtualization layer defines the portable wireless air-interface modules corresponding to the physical radio transmission technologies (RTTs) to enable the flexible change of different RTTs by an external memory card, and facilitates the visitor OS operable upon the host OS of the mobile terminal device to support seamless handover and switch between different OS platforms.
Abstract: A broadcast playback system comprises a computer and a broadcast playback apparatus being connected to each other via a serial bus module. The computer loads predetermined control codes stored in the broadcast playback apparatus, performs the predetermined control codes to display a control menu. The broadcast playback apparatus plays a broadcasted program when receiving a play command generated by the computer according to a play input on the control menu. The broadcast playback apparatus stores the broadcasted program thereby generating a broadcast file when receiving a store command generated by the computer if a store input on the control menu. The broadcast playback apparatus replays a selected broadcast file when receiving a replay command generated by the computer according to a selection input of the selected broadcast file on the control menu. Moreover, a related broadcast playback method is further provided.

Abstract: A method and system for wirelessly providing venue-based data to one or more hand held devices. Venue-based data can be acquired from one or more venues. The venue-based data can be authenticated and wirelessly transmitted to one or more hand held devices through one or more wireless telecommunications networks, in response to authenticating the venue-based data and/or the hand held device(s) and/or a user of the hand held device(s), in order to permit the venue-based data to be accessible via one or more hand held devices at locations remote from the venue(s).
Abstract: The present invention discloses a system of group communication and a method of group call processing based on CDMA2000 high-rate packet data network. The group communication system based on CDMA2000 high-rate packet data network includes: base station, packet control function module, packet data service node and AAA (authentication, authorization, accounting) server. The system further includes: multiple accessing terminals for making or responding the service request of group talk; group dispatching server for providing centralized control of group talk service, implementing the entire group talk service procedure from group user authentication to transmission of voice service package; group dispatch user side, which is an accessing gateway of group communication system, for providing signaling and service link between the base station and the group dispatching server.
Abstract: A secondary satellite radio or broadcast channel is used to broadcast advertisement clips (e.g., audio clips) to a receiver for subsequent decoding and playback. The receiver is configured for different tiers of service, e.g., one that delivers substantially advertising-free content and another that delivers content that includes more significant amounts of advertising. The content delivered to both is the same content; however, for the service tier that includes more advertising, the advertisements broadcast on the secondary channel are interleaved into the content, preferably in such a way that the continuity of the content being delivered is not compromised.

Abstract: A method and system for determining synchronization status in a wide band CDMA (WCDMA) network may comprise calculating a signal to noise ratio (SNR) of a downlink dedicated physical channel (DPCH) based on a plurality of transmit power control (TPC) bits received via the downlink dedicated physical channel (DPCH), wherein the value of at least one of the plurality of TPC bits is not known when at least one of the plurality of TPC bits is received. The transmit circuitry may be controlled based on the calculated signal to noise ratio. The transmit circuitry may be disabled if the calculated SNR of the plurality of TPC bits is below a first channel threshold. The transmit circuitry may be enabled if the calculated SNR of the plurality of TPC bits is above a second channel threshold.

Abstract: A transmission power control system can establish synchronization by matching adjustment start timings while repeating adjustment periods even when start timings of transmission power balance adjustment are different due to fluctuation of transmission delay of control message from the control station to base station, and can increase circuit capacity by establishing balance of transmission powers between the base stations. In the transmission power control system the base station comprises control means for controlling initiation of a balance adjustment period for performing the balance adjustment from a frame number determined on the basis of frame number of the balance adjustment period.
