  • Patent number: 7792500
Abstract: A rate-adaptive method of communicating over a multipath wireless communication system uses multiple links such that each end of a link uses multiple transmit and receive antennas. A number of independent streams that are to be transmitted for each link is determined based on an overall system performance measure. In addition, the system may also jointly determine the best modulation, coding, power control, and frequency assignment for each link, based on an overall system performance measure. In OFDM systems, the number of independent streams, as well as the modulation, coding, and power control, may be determined on a tone-by-tone basis based on an overall system performance measure.

  • Patent number: 7773941
Abstract: A method and system for positioning a relay in a wide area communication network can enable improved operating efficiency of the network. The method includes processing a plurality of requests, received from a plurality of wireless communication devices, for connections to the network, where each device in the plurality of wireless communication devices can operate using a wide area networking standard and can operate using an ad hoc networking standard (step 305). A location in the network of each device in the plurality of wireless communication devices is then determined (step 310). An operating position for the relay is then determined based on an evaluation of the location in the network of each device in the plurality of wireless communication devices (step 315).

  • Patent number: 7761095
Abstract: A reach back secure communications terminal includes a modem to satellite interconnect board that captures DTMF tones, demodulates encrypted modem information, and converts both into an ASCII string for presentation to a data port of a satellite phone, allowing out-of-band control of a non-secure satellite system (e.g., AT command control of a data port) by a user on a secure side of an encryption device, by including the ability to interpret control signals and control the satellite system appropriately. A false dial tone is presented to the encryption device, and the data stream coming from the encryption device is monitored for the presence of dual-tone, multi-frequency (DTMF) tones representing control signals, the DTMF tones are converted to ASCII characters, which are in turn received as control signals by the satellite phone, allowing control of the functions of the satellite system directly from the secure side of the encryption device.

  • Patent number: 7761048
Abstract: A wireless Local Area Network provides data service through a data LAN and also provides video broadcast service through a video LAN. A wireless LAN subscriber accesses the video LAN through one of a plurality of Video Access Points (VAPs) that broadcast multiple video programs on a channel having a frequency different than the frequency over which the subscriber accesses the data LAN. Each VAP maintains the video channel in a one-way broadcast-only mode to prevent a wireless LAN subscriber from seeking to uplink information on that channel. In this way, the wireless LAN can employ a common protocol for both data and video transmission, and deliver the video streams at the maximum permissible downlink transmission rate.

  • Patent number: 7738907
Abstract: A communication system optimizes cell edge performance and spectral efficiency by determining an adaptive power control parameter based on system performance metrics measured by a serving Node B and further measured by, and reported to the serving Node B by, neighboring Node B's. The adaptive power control parameter is then used to determine an uplink transmit power of a user equipment (UE) served by the serving Node B. The uplink transmit power may be determined by the Node B and then conveyed to the UE, or the Node B may broadcast the adaptive power control parameter to the UE and the UE may self-determine the uplink transmit power. In addition, as a frequency reuse factor of one has been proposed for such communication systems, interference levels may be even further improved by employment of an intra-site interference cancellation scheme in the sectors serviced by the Node B.

  • Patent number: 7729690
Abstract: A mobile telephone includes an application processor, internal memory, an external memory card, a backup software module and a restore software module. User data is stored in the internal memory. The backup software module detects changes in the user data, resulting in modified user data. The modified user data is stored onto the external memory card. When the user data is erased from the internal drive or the wireless device needs to be reset the restore software module reads the modified user data from the external memory card and writes the modified user data back onto the internal memory. In this fashion, any modified user data is not lost when the wireless device is reset.

  • Patent number: 7729669
Abstract: A system and method for amplifying cellular signals and reducing interference introduced into a cellular network by the network amplifiers. The network amplifier includes an antenna configured to receive a downlink signal from a base station and a variable gain module for amplifying an uplink signal received from a handset. The variable gain module applies an amplification factor to the uplink signal to generate an adjusted uplink signal to be transmitted to the base station via the antenna. A processor is used for determining a value of the amplification factor, where the value of the amplification factor is a function of a level of the downlink signal. The amplification factor may be selected so that interference introduced into a cellular network by the transmission of the adjusted uplink signal is substantially eliminated.
