  • Patent number: 5951432
Abstract: A planetary gearing arrangement has a compound planetary gear set and a simple planetary gear set. The planetary gear sets are continuously interconnected at the sun gear members and are interconnectable through the selective engagement of two proportioning clutches which change the interaction of the gear sets. A single member, a ring gear, is continuously connected to an output shaft. The arrangement also includes two input clutches and two brakes which in combination with the proportioning clutches permit the establishment of five forward ratios and one reverse ratio. Two of the forward ratios are underdrives and two of the ratios are overdrives. All of the forward ratio interchanges, the neutral to forward ratio change and the neutral to reverse ratio change are of the single transition type.

  • Patent number: 5951428
Abstract: A rotation transmission device mounted on a 4WD car can stop the front drive train during 2WD mode, and also permits smooth changeover from 2WD to 4WD even while the vehicle is moving. The rotation transmission device is mounted in a transfer which transmits the output of the engine transmission to the rear propeller shaft through an input shaft and to the front propeller shaft through a silent chain. The rotation transmission device includes a two-way clutch through which the rotation of the input shaft is selectively transmitted to a chain sprocket, an electromagnetic clutch for selectively locking and unlocking the two-way clutch, and a multiple disk clutch provided between the two-way clutch and the electromagnetic clutch to function as a synchronizer that permits smooth mode change from 2WD to 4WD even while the vehicle is moving.

  • Patent number: 5950490
Abstract: A multi-clutched transmission system which may be implemented in an automobile or other motor vehicle. A common drive shaft is generally coupled to a number of clutches comprising a number of inner drive portions and a number of outer portions. A number of gears may be provided that are in contact with a selected one of the clutches. A pressurized hydraulic input chamber may move within the system to engage one of the clutches with a particular gear. When a particular one of the clutches is engaged, a specific torque is generated at the output drive shaft.

  • Patent number: 5950783
Abstract: A self-adjusting wrap spring clutch has a spring overlying driving and driven arbors and in engagement with each. One end of the spring is loosely connected to a control collar, which surrounds the spring and at least a portion of each of the arbors, while its other end is connected to the driven arbor. The control collar is held against rotation by a spring biased pawl engaging one of a plurality of preferably equiangularly spaced teeth on its circumference. When a solenoid is energized, the pawl is withdrawn from the tooth on the control collar and the spring tightens on the driving arbor to transmit torque to the driven arbor from the driving arbor. The pawl rides on a cam surface on a gear hub, which rotates whenever the driven arbor rotates, until the pawl falls into an opening or low dwell in the cam surface so that the pawl can engage one of the teeth on the control collar.

  • Patent number: 5947250
Abstract: A threading clutch apparatus (10) for a multiple spindle machine which allows for selective engagement of connected gears with a rotating shaft (12) which is connected to the threading clutch apparatus. The threading clutch apparatus includes a hub (14) which is positively connected with and rotates with the shaft (12), and a housing (18) which is supported from the hub via bearings (28 and 30). The threading clutch apparatus further includes a pair of pistons (48 and 66) which are positioned to communicate with a compressed fluid source. The threading clutch apparatus further includes a first and second plurality of friction disks (92 and 122) which are operably connected with the gears of the multiple spindle machine. When compressed fluid is communicated to a piston, the piston compresses the associated plurality of the friction disks which results in the positive engagement of the associated gear and rotation of the gear with the shaft.

  • Patent number: 5928107
Abstract: For testing the operation of the braking system of vehicles, in particular heavy trucks having an automatic multi-ratio mechanical transmission, an estimate for the total weight of the vehicle is formed on the basis of the vehicle's own parameters and driving parameters. If account is taken for the braking force or the acceleration in this calculation, in case of considerable deviations of the calculated vehicle weight from a threshold value, it can be concluded that a defect exists in the braking system of the vehicle. In this case, an alarm signal is given to the driver of the vehicle and/or directly geared to the operation of the mechanical transmission.
