  • Patent number: 6671494
Abstract: A portable FM stereo RF transmitter having an audio plug extending therefrom directly or via a cable and which mates with the earphone or output jack of an audio source such as a portable battery operated CD or tape player and having no external antenna. The portable RF transmitter modulates audio signals from the audio source onto an FM carrier and transmits them to an FM receiver mounted on a headset worn by a user. The RF transmitter uses its own ground circuit and the ground circuit of the audio source as two elements of a short dipole. The two ground circuits are electrically isolated at RF by an RF choke but connected together at audio frequencies by the low impedance of the choke at audio. The choke's leakage inductance also reduces the capacitive reactance of the dipole antenna for better power dissipation. A transformer coupling the RF output to the dipole transforms the impedance of the dipole to a value closer to the output impedance of the RF transmitter.

  • Patent number: 6658254
Abstract: A multimedia call is completed to a mobile user, who registered to receive a multimedia call at a multimedia terminal using a portable intelligent device. A mobile user record including a physical address of a multimedia terminal and a user address is stored. In response to a multimedia call addressed to the user address, the physical address is determined and call notification information is transmitted to the multimedia terminal at the physical address. The multimedia call is then completed to the multimedia terminal at the physical address.

  • Patent number: 6654608
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for controlling the initial transmit power from a base station to a mobile station at call set-up and call handoff. The initial transmit power from a base station during a call set-up can be reduced from the conventional full power level by a sum of the hysteresis value for the cell which is handing off the mobile station and the hysteresis value for the cell which is receiving the mobile station. When a mobile station initiates or receives a call, the initial transmit power from a base station to the mobile station is reduced from the full power level by the hysteresis value for the hysteresis zone which surrounds the cell in which call set-up is to occur. The reduction in the initial power levels reduces interference caused to surrounding cells at the initiation of a call set-up or call handoff.

  • Patent number: 6639905
Abstract: A transmitter, for controlling at least one receiver by intermittently transmitting groups of messages. The transmitter includes a controller arranged to provide intermittently groups of messages for transmission. Each of said groups includes a plurality of messages in series and separated by time intervals, wherein each of the plurality of messages in a group includes control information such that control of the receiver can be effected by reception of any one of the plurality of messages in the group. The invention increases the efficiency with which control messages can be transmitted without markedly increasing the power consumption of transceivers in a radio frequency network.

  • Patent number: 6622020
Abstract: A location searching service system in the personal handy phone system (or PHS) is capable of searching for the location of each PHS mobile phone (such as the cordless phones used in homes) and providing the information of where the requested user of the mobile phone is located. A service system specifies the current location of the PHS mobile phone within an extremely small area denoted as a lot number in the address format of the administrative system. In the case of the mobile communication service system of the PHS, each calling area (which is about 1-2 square kms) is a gathering of a plurality of location register areas, each corresponding to the radio propagation range of a base station, being a small area having a radius of about 100 m. The location data of each mobile phone can also be registered in a common database through a PHS exchanger and this can be done for every small area having a radius of about 100 m.

  • Patent number: 6594243
Abstract: Soft handoffs in an IS-95 CDMA system or other wireless communication system are controlled using an enhanced set of soft handoff parameters which allow the system to adapt more readily to changing radio frequency (RF) conditions. In an illustrative embodiment, values for particular ones of the soft handoff parameters are selected in accordance with a set of rules, including rules such as, e.g., select the minimum value of add threshold among the members of an active set of pilots for a given mobile station; select the maximum value of drop threshold among the members of the active set; select the minimum value of drop threshold timer among the members of the active set; and select the minimum value of comparison threshold among the members of the active set. A quality measure is then determined for each of the members of the active set, based on one or more of the selected soft handoff parameter values and values of one or more additional parameters, e.g.

  • Patent number: 6591112
Abstract: Method and a system for establishing a communication channel between a first communication device, or alternatively, a communication network operator, and one or more second communication devices. The identity of the one or more second communication devices is not pre-determined by the first communication device (or the communication network operator). Instead, the identity of which one or more of the second communication devices connects to the first communication device (or the network operator) is determined by the operation of one or more filters transmitted by the first communication device (or the network operator) on certain data that are both transmitted by the first communication device (or the network operator) as well as measured locally at each of the second communication devices.

  • Patent number: 6580703
Abstract: A code reader reads code specification information stored in a code list. An interference level measurer measures the interference level of a received signal despread with the code specification information read by the code reader. A threshold selector selects a code specification information corresponding to an interference level smaller than a preset threshold and stores the selected code specification information in a code candidate list. A code determiner determines the code specification information of a base station from the selected code specification information. When a new base station is added, a base station code may be automatically determined without needing a theoretical design for assigning codes to all base stations.

  • Patent number: 6574484
Abstract: There is provided a method for emergency service access using a mobil telephone. When an emergency situation arises and a caller enters an emergency number such as 911 [send] from a locked mobile telephone, the mobile telephone compares the entered value (911) with a list of emergency numbers stored in the memory of the mobile telephone. If the entered number is on the known emergency number list, the mobile telephone immediately places the emergency call even though the telephone is locked. All other key combinations will be compared to a user defined access code previously stored in memory. If the entered value matches the value stored in memory, the mobile phone will be unlocked and ready for normal use. If the values do not match, the mobile phone will remain disabled. In addition, during an emergency call, a mobile provider provides a set of emergency contact records (ECR) to an emergency public service answering point (PSAP).

  • Patent number: 6564056
Abstract: An intelligent device controller (hub 100) for communications-enabled (“intelligent”) devices (120-140) implements a private network (102) of the devices, facilitating communications to and from only those devices that have been registered with the controller. Each device comes with a memory card (220) that stores interface programs for and information-including a unique device ID-about the device. A card reader (202) of the controller reads the memory card to register the device. Communications between the controller and the device are encrypted using the device ID as the encryption key. The private network is either based on standard building wiring or preferably is wireless to enable deployment and relocation of devices easily and, without need for a special infrastructure.

  • Patent number: 6556553
Abstract: Methods for improving communication performance in a wireless communication system where the wireless communication system has at least one mobile wireless communication device and a plurality of transmitter/receiver sites. The transmitter/receiver sites have a geographic area, defined as a cell, within which the mobile wireless communication devices can communicate with at least one of the transmitter/receiver sites. The methods determine when the mobile wireless communication device should rate shift or roam based on connection quality measurement data. In one method, the measurement data is subjected to configurable parameters to create a functional relationship value that is recorded. The recorded functional relationship values are trended and extrapolated to determine whether a rate shift or roam should be performed.

  • Patent number: 6556833
Abstract: A method and system for transmitting a position information from a mobile terminal of a mobile communication network via a network element to a network node, wherein a control information indicating the requirement of a position information of the mobile terminal at the network node is set in the radio interface message. This control information is checked at the network element as to whether a position information has to be forwarded or not. The position information is determined at the network element and may be combined with a higher layer information so as to generate a complete higher layer information to be forwarded to the network node. Thereby, a position information can be supplied to the network node without substantially increasing overhead and processing power required for the radio interface message.
