  • Patent number: 6549790
Abstract: The portable telecommunications apparatus has an audio input for receiving sound, an audio output for generating sound, a controller for controlling the audio input and the audio output, and an audio accessory interface for operatively connecting an external audio accessory. The accessory is capable of receiving external sound and forwarding it as audio signals to the apparatus and/or capable of generating external sound in response to audio signals supplied from the apparatus. The controller is arranged to receive a request for an audio service from any of at least two audio accessories operatively connected to the apparatus. The controller also has a logical state machine, the individual states of which represent possible operational conditions for the telecommunication apparatus and the audio accessories. The state machine defines how the request for audio service is to be handled each of the operational conditions.

  • Patent number: 6549758
Abstract: The invention relates to a radio system including one or more network elements, a base station controller and a network management system that are operatively interconnected by means of telecommunication connections, and to a method of testing telecommunication connections of a network element to be install in the radio system. Information between the network elements is transmitted in frames that are divided into time slots, and the base station controller controls one or more network elements being physically connected to the system by means of the telecommunication connections. To enable reliable and fast installation of the network elements, the network element transmits to the base station controller a message including information that the network element is ready to be tested. The base station controller initiates a testing procedure after receiving the message. The testing includes all channels between the base station controller and the network element.

  • Patent number: 6542519
Abstract: A beam having the best performance for the present downlink transmits the signal carrying information. In another beam transmitted, in a corresponding manner having the best performance in regard to the next mobile station to be communicated in a next time slot, a signal is created which has a low cross correlation relative to the present signal carrying information. The average power in the direction to the next mobile station to be communicated in the next TDMA time slot will be given by the sum of the average power of the two signals after amplification by the respective antenna pattern. This takes place because the cross correlation between the signals is low due to which fact the summed signal will show a power addition but not a coherent addition. This is feasible as the summed signal is not be decoded by the next mobile station, but used entirely as a measurement of power.

  • Patent number: 6542487
Abstract: In a code division multiple access mobile communication system, a communication signal is modulated and multiplexed with different diffusion codes and is used in data communication between a base station (30) and each of mobile units (40, 41, 42). The communication signal is a time division multiplex signal with a repeated frame having a plurality of time slots (TS0, TS1, TS2) assigned to different radio channels, respectively. A slot synchronous signal is produced in accordance with a reference clock signal of a global positioning system. The time slots are synchronized between the base station and each of the mobile units in accordance with the slot synchronous signal.

  • Patent number: 6535717
Abstract: The present system comprises a transmitting apparatus for digital broadcast which includes an original signal generating section, delaying section, information amount reducing section, and transmitting section. A receiving and reproducing apparatus for digital broadcast includes a signal reception front stage unit for receiving a high quality signal and a low quality signal, mode determining section and reproducing section composed of a delaying section and selecting section for selectively reproducing the high quality signal and the low quality signal. By employing time diversity, the transmitting apparatus sends the low quality signal having a smaller bandwidth and the high quality signal so that the low quality signal has a preceding time lag relative to the high quality signal, and the receiving apparatus reproduces broadcasting programs. Utilizing the frequency band for broadcast effectively, many broadcasting programs can be increased, and the investment for providing a gap filler can be minimized.

  • Patent number: 6529711
Abstract: When a request for reception of radio signals is delivered by wireless communication section 3, subordinate processing portion 12 fetches programs necessary for reception of radio data from external memory 2 and stores them into command cache memory 13. At this instant, to prevent data stored in command cache memory 13 from being altered by other interrupt requests, the system instructs interrupt controller 16 to mask all interrupt requests except urgent ones. Through this arrangement it is possible to reduce noise during execution of a specific processing, particularly during reception of data.

  • Patent number: 6529741
Abstract: The invention provides a system and method for controlling transmission power of a mobile unit in a wireless communication system which minimizes transmission power overshoot caused by counteracting the effects of deep fading. Sets of power control bits are transmitted from the base station to the mobile unit using &pgr;/4 DQPSK modulation. A first set of the bits indicates to the mobile unit a request to increase the mobile units transmission power by a predetermined amount. A second set of the bits indicates to the mobile unit that the mobile unit should increase its transmission power by an amount which is greater than the predetermined amount. A third set of the bits indicates to the mobile unit a request to decrease the mobile units transmission power by the predetermined amount. A fourth set of the bits indicates to the mobile unit that the mobile unit should decrease its transmission power by the amount which is greater than the predetermined amount.

  • Patent number: 6529484
Abstract: An access network for mobile terminals has a switching circuit (VCX) connected to at least one other external network and to a local access network (RLA) which has a number of radio terminals (BR) for providing communication with mobile terminals (MT). Set-up and release protocols provide for signaling channels and user channels between switching circuit (VCX) and a mobile terminal (MT). Security protocol (SSCOP) provides for the channels implemented by exchanging signaling messages at the level of switching circuit (VCX) and mobile terminals (MT). An adaptation server (ARX) intercepts the messages sent by the signaling protocols and implements the intercepted messages. Management protocols of the local access network (RLA) oversee set up and release of the signaling channels and the user channels and reserves corresponding radio resources for the signaling channels.

  • Patent number: 6522864
Abstract: A mobile terminal (6) communicates via a satellite (8), which projects a number of overlapping spot beams (10), with a fixed earth station (2). To determine which spot beam (10) is to be used for communication, the mobile terminal signals in a common signalling channel which is simultaneously received by all, or a subgroup of, the spot beams (10). The satellite (8) retransmits to the fixed earth station (2) in separate channels the signal as received by each of the spot beams (10) which are able to receive the common signalling channel. The relative strengths of the signal as received in the different spot beams (10) are compared at the fixed earth station and a communications channel is assigned to the mobile terminal in one of the spot beams (10), selected according to the comparison of signal strengths.
