  • Patent number: 5819173
Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for communicating on a wireless network which offers a selected service. In accordance with the method, a wireless communicator is tuned to a first signaling control channel broadcast by a wireless network. The first channel identifies one or more services provided over that network. This procedure is repeated for successive signaling control channels until a wireless network providing the selected service is identified. Once this has been identified, communication is conducted between the wireless communicator and the network.

  • Patent number: 5806000
Abstract: A system and method for providing short message service point-to-point extension phone service within a radio telecommunications network. The system includes a gateway mobile switching center (G-MSC), a home location register (HLR), a plurality of mobile switching centers (MSCs), and a plurality of intelligent terminals. The intelligent terminals are assigned to a single common pilot directory number (PDN) in addition to their individual directory numbers. When a call directed to the PDN is received in the G-MSC, the G-MSC sends a routing request message to the HLR. The HLR sends a short message service (SMS) data transmission to each of the plurality of intelligent terminals assigned to the PDN notifying associated mobile subscribers of an incoming extension phone call. Mobile subscribers desiring to accept the call utilize their intelligent terminals to send a responding SMS message back to the HLR.

  • Patent number: 5805991
Abstract: A system and method for processing telephone calls to a personal telephone number, such calls being of the type in which a call to a called party's personal telephone number results in a page to a pager of a called party and the caller's call is held in the network to be bridged to a return telephone call of the called party, employs type-ahead for faster perceived system response while not permitting free paging. In particular, although type-ahead is permitted, the page is not immediately initiated upon receipt of the last character of a valid command string prior to the end of the announcement that is played to the caller upon his call reaching a bridging and signaling unit. Instead, the bridging and signaling unit is arranged to respond so that it appears to have accepted and executed the command, and moves into the next phase of operation, e.g., music on hold.

  • Patent number: 5802471
Abstract: This invention provides a mobile communication system in which a call-incoming side can switch a communication line to an appropriate one which corresponds to a communication type requested by a transmitter's terminal. One example of its construction is as follows.A mobile station has a plurality of terminal units corresponding to plural types of communication and a call number is preliminarily assigned to each of them. A terminal unit in a telephone network uses a call number corresponding to a desired communication type when a datum is transmitted to the mobile station. The mobile station informs this call number to all of the terminal units which are connected to the mobile station. The respective terminal units inform the communication type to the mobile station only when the communication type corresponding to the call number can be handled. The mobile station informs this communication type contained in a reception call receiving signal to a mobile communication exchange.

  • Patent number: 5797100
Abstract: In a method for setting up a call connection for a group call to a group of mobile radio subscribers in a mobile radio network, a subscriber calling a group of mobile radio subscribers dials a subscriber call number having numerals for the identification of the call as a group call, which number is received by a mobile switching center in the mobile radio network. The numerals of the subscriber call number are evaluated with reference to area information for the identification of a local service area and with reference to group information. After the evaluation of the numerals of the subscriber call number dialed for the group call, the area information and the group information are transmitted directly to the target mobile switching center responsible for the called group in the service area, by which the further connection set-up for the group call is initiated using the received area information and group information.

  • Patent number: 5778313
Abstract: A pre-pay service unit uses pseudo-numbers to identify subscribers and substitutes actual numbers to complete a call after verification of authenticity and verification of a positive balance in a subscriber's account. The service unit and the cellular telephone exchange data in the process of authentication. For outgoing calls, a cellular telephone first transmits an "800" number and an ANI. The "800" number is the telephone number of the pre-pay service unit, which then requests number actually dialed. The cellular telephone responds with dialed digits, a security code, and status data. If the information is correct, the dialed digits are then passed to a local exchange carrier to complete the call. For incoming calls, a pseudo-number directs the call to the pre-pay service unit, which converts the pseudo-number to the actual telephone number of a subscriber's cellular telephone.

  • Patent number: 5768482
Abstract: Method and apparatus prepare an image for printing--and in some cases include an output stage, performing the actual printing--when the overall number of pixels is being scaled up or down from an original image or portion. Image-sharpening procedures are controlled automatically by a function of the number of pixels in the original image and the number in the output device. Any of a great variety of such functions may be used, but we prefer a step-function of a ratio of the two pixel counts--particularly a two-valued step-function in which one value is zero and the other serves as a sharpening factor in a sharpening algorithm. When the function yields its zero value, for efficiency the sharpening computations are preferably turned off. The nonzero value is automatically selected when the number of output pixels is more than twice the number of input pixels. The sharpening-factor value, ideally two, is multiplied by the deviation of each image element, e. g.

  • Patent number: 5765107
Abstract: In a cellular telephone system, a method for detecting and identifying a fraudulent user who cloned the cellular subscriber's electronic serial number and mobile identification number to gain unauthorized access to the cellular system. Cell sites transmit a paging signal on a control channel immediately after the cellular user establishes a voice communication. If an acknowledgement to the paging signal is received, then the cellular user currently engaged in the voice communication is fraudulent. A location of the fraudulent user can then be precisely identified by comparing a receiver signal strength indicator from several adjacent cell sites.

  • Patent number: 5758292
Abstract: A cordless telephone includes at least one child unit and a mother unit. The mother unit transmits and receives a radio signal to and from the child unit. The mother unit includes first and second receiver circuits, a transmitter circuit, and a muting circuit. The first receiver circuit receives an UP-channel signal from the child unit and transmits the received signal to a telephone line. The transmitter circuit receives the signal transmitted via the telephone line from the counter party, and converts the signal received from the counter party into a DOWN-channel signal which will then be transmitted to the child unit. The second receiver circuit receives a broadcasting radio signal. The muting circuit mutes the output signal from the second receiver circuit. The muting circuit mutes the output signal derived from the second receiver circuit when either the UP-channel signal, or the DOWN-channel signal may give spurious interference to the second receiver circuit.

  • Patent number: 5749045
Abstract: A method for handling alarm conditions from paging stations in a paging system is disclosed. The paging system includes a paging terminal, a plurality of paging stations, and a network manager. When a paging station has an alarm condition, the paging station forwards the alarm to the network manager, which in turn, compares the alarm with an alarm record for that paging station and determines whether or not that alarm is a higher priority than the previous alarms received from the paging station. If so, the network manager transmits a signal to the paging terminal to page the technician responsible for servicing that particular paging station. The technician is paged and dispatched to the paging station for service.
