  • Patent number: 5873038
Abstract: The present invention describes a system and a method for distributing channel port loading functionality in a radio base station. The radio base station has a plurality of transceivers and at least one frequency agile combiner. The transceivers have a plurality of channel ports each able to transceive either one of at least two channel functions each having corresponding higher or lower loading averages. The method has steps of averaging loading of each channel port over a predetermined period of time, identifying and seizing the channel port having lower average loading, reconfiguring the identified and seized channel port to the channel function having the higher loading average, letting adjust the frequency agile combiner accordingly and transferring the communication having higher loading average on the reconfigured channel port.

  • Patent number: 5873043
Abstract: A system for communicating multiple page messages or pages via a forward overhead control channel (FOCC) of a cellular network control channel to a cellular-compatible receiving device and combining the data obtained from each received page to form an aggregate message comprising a data sequence. A cellular communications device operating in a normal state responds to a page received via the FOCC by comparing the received page to one or more masks maintained in its memory. If the received page contains a predetermined characteristic and matches a corresponding mask maintained by the receiving device, then it responds by transitioning from a normal state to a receive device identifier state. In the receive device identifier state, the cellular communications device monitors the FOCC for a page having a special identifier assigned to that device. Each received page is compared to a mask corresponding to the special identifier and maintained in memory of the selected device.

  • Patent number: 5872895
Abstract: A method for object based color matching when printing color documents. Objects are anything that can be drawn, and include text, rectangle, oval, region, polygon, and PixMaps. Color matching is performed on each object in a page prior to rendering the object into a pixel map. This is accomplished by setting up multiple concurrent color matching sessions that have different rendering intents. Depending upon the object type, a color matching session with a particular rendering intent is used to perform color matching on the object.

  • Patent number: 5870676
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for monitoring problematic transmission channels in a cellular telephone system are disclosed. In the preferred embodiment, the channel monitoring method or apparatus keeps track of a defined number of calls M. After channel selection, the channel monitoring process determines whether the channel assignment was successful. The number of calls M defines the window in which the process tracks channel failures. The disclosed monitoring process can be used in either an analog embodiment or a time division multiple access (TDMA) digital embodiment having multiple channels for each frequency, such as TDMA-3. After every frequency selection, whether call assignment is successful or unsuccessful, channel information is monitored. If the monitored channel information exceeds placement thresholds, the selected frequency is placed into an alarm subpool. Preferably, the channel monitoring process has at least one alarm subpool.

  • Patent number: 5862481
Abstract: An interworking proxy is coupled to first and second mobile switching systems and translates between first and second management protocols used by the first and second systems, respectively. The first system requests service for a mobile user using the first management protocol. The proxy receives the service request and translates it from the first management protocol to the second management protocol, and then transmits the translated service request to the second system. The second system provides a response to the service request using the second management protocol. The interworking proxy receives the response and translates it from the second management protocol to the first management protocol, and then transmits the translated response to the first system.

  • Patent number: 5854975
Abstract: A cellular telecommunications system having a security feature which allows only pre-authorized users to complete cellular telephone calls. The system and method recognizes a cellular radiotelephone's pre-programmed and pre-selected telephone number and an automated number identification code (ANI). The pre-selected telephone number is reserved to the pre-paid cellular telecommunications system. The cellular radiotelephone transmits the ANI and a dialed number identification system code (DNIS) to a cellular switch, which contacts a host computer for call validation by the pre-paid service provider. This system also allows pre-authorized users to receive and pay for incoming calls as well as purchase additional air time and monthly access fees with convenient pre-paid cards.

  • Patent number: 5835857
Abstract: Methods for operating a wireless communications system provided for reducing the use of the system by unauthorized users by establishing the geographical location of selected user, comparing this location with the known locations of authorized users and denying service to the selected user if the selected user's location does not correspond to the known location of authorized users. Seamless hand-over of a user between nodes of the communication system is effected by periodically recomputing a algorithm which determines a preferred node for communication with the user. When the algorithm indicates that another node is preferred, a call initiation handshake is established between the user and the preferred node, while still maintaining communication with the original node. Communication between the user and the first node is not interrupted until the user establishes a communication "lock" with the second node.

  • Patent number: 5832379
Abstract: A cellular communications system is provided have both satellite nodes and surface nodes for providing mobile cellular communications services for a plurality of mobile user units. The surface and satellite nodes are fully integrated by a network controller for providing service over large areas. In the alternative, each user unit includes link control means permitting the user unit to designate the mode of communications, either satellite node communications or ground node communications. In addition, multiple beam, relatively high gain antennas are disposed in the satellite nodes to establish satellite cells having enough gain in the satellite part of the system such that a user unit need only comprise a small, mobile handset with a non-directional antenna for communications with both ground nodes and satellite nodes.

  • Patent number: 5832378
Abstract: A multiple mode, personal, wireless communications system exists within a radiotelephone network serving general customers and provides additional services to a select group of customers. The system uses handsets (32) which automatically switch between a standard cellular radiotelephone mode of operation (1901) and an enhanced cordless mode (1420) when the handsets (32) are within range of pico cells (26) that are interconnected to the public switched telephone network (20). Each pico cell is controlled via a framework of overlay cells (10b) that operates independently of the radiotelephone network and uses a unique control protocol on a small number of reserved cellular channels. Each pico cell consists of a spectrally dynamic, non-capturing, frequency agile, multi-purpose base station (26) provided at customer-selected locations to cooperate with the overlay cell framework. Each pico cell is capable of supporting multiple handsets (32) and uses low power operation that achieves limited coverage.

  • Patent number: 5826187
Abstract: An integrated cordless telephone and telephone answering device allows a user to selectively replay messages previously recorded on the telephone answering device either through a loudspeaker or through an earpiece, both of which are provided in the cordless handset, as well as locally at the telephone answering device. The loudspeaker is the same loudspeaker that is used when the cordless handset is in a speakerphone mode. When a user wishes to initiate message retrieval through the cordless handset, a PLAY key is pressed which automatically supplies the audio signal to the loudspeaker. If the user then wishes to listen to messages through the earpiece in the cordless handset, a MODE key is pressed which supplies the audio signal to the earpiece.

  • Patent number: 5822691
Abstract: A system to detect the use of stolen mobile identification number (MIN) and electronic serial number (ESN) information to fraudulently place wireless calls by comparing the last phone number connected (LNC) as recorded by the radio telephone network with the last phone number connected as recorded in the mobile radio telephone unit. The mobile radio telephone unit LNC is transmitted to the base station upon initiation of a radio telephone call for comparison with the LNC recorded by the radio telephone network. The network will detect if a MIN/ESN combination is in use by two different mobile units because the LNC of the two mobile units will be different due to the different phone numbers called by each user.
