  • Patent number: 9667957
Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer programs for improved quality video compression. Image quality from MPEG-style video coding may be improved by preserving a higher number of bits during intermediate encoding and decoding processing steps. Problems of inverse discrete cosine transform (IDCT) mismatch can be eliminated by exactly matching the IDCT function numerical algorithm of the decoder to the IDCT function numerical algorithm used for the decoding portion of the encoder. Also included is an application of high precision compression to wide dynamic range images by extending the range of the “quantization parameter” or “QP”. The extension of QP may be accomplished either by increasing the range of QP directly, or indirectly through a non-linear transformation. Also included is an application of extended intermediate processing precision and an extended QP range to reduced contrast regions of an image to extend the precision with which the low-contrast portions are compression coded.

  • Patent number: 9667999
Abstract: Described herein is a method and system for encoding video data. The design comprises a two pass encoding system with bi-direction control to and from a classification engine. In the first pass coder, a future picture is encoded to produce a set of parameters that characterize the future picture. In the second pass coder a current picture is encoded to produce a video output. The classification engine is the center of perceptual enhancement. The classification engine interprets the set of parameters from the first pass coder and classifies the current picture.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for decoding an image, for decoding a bitstream including a plurality of layers. The image decoding method may comprise: a step of receiving and identifying dependency information indicating whether an upper layer is coded by the same coding method as a lower layer; and a step of recovering the image of the upper layer based on the identified dependency information. Thus, information indicating whether the information of the reference layer which the current layer refers to is encoded data or recovered value can be identified.

  • Patent number: 9648334
Abstract: This disclosure describes a bi-predictive merge mode in which a bi-predictive video block inherits motion information from two different neighboring blocks, wherein the two different neighboring blocks were each encoded in a uni-predictive mode. Bi-predictive coding may improve the ability to achieve compression in video coding. The described bi-predictive merge mode may increase the number of bi-predictive candidates that can be used in the context of merge mode coding by allowing two separate uni-predicted neighbors to be used to define bi-predictive motion information for a video block.

  • Patent number: 9641835
Abstract: A system is provided for determining a binary codeword for a symbol representing a transform coefficient within transform units (TUs) that divide up coding units (CUs) in a High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) system. The system determines a truncated rice prefix and, when a parameter variable is greater than zero, determines a truncated rice suffix for the symbol. The system determines a main prefix either from the truncated rice prefix alone, or from a combination of the truncated rice prefix and the truncated rice suffix. When the main prefix is the same as a comparison string, the system also determines a main suffix. The system determines the final binary codeword for the symbol either from the main prefix alone, or from a combination of the main prefix and the main suffix.

  • Patent number: 9641858
Abstract: A method and apparatus for decoding and displaying a bitstream, such as, for example, Motorola/GI HITS bitstream, is provided. The method avoids displaying artifacts caused by displaying incompletely decoded pictures after channel acquisition. After the channel acquisition, an entry picture, a P-picture with the refreshed I-slices at the top of the picture, is first displayed with all pixels below the refreshed I-slices zeroed (blacked) out. Then the subsequent P-pictures are displayed with all pixels below their respective refreshed I-slices zeroed out. Once a P-picture has been completely decoded, normal decoding process is started.

  • Patent number: 9633263
Abstract: An approach for re-identifying an object in a first test image is presented. Brightness transfer functions (BTFs) between respective pairs of training images are determined. Respective similarity measures are determined between the first test image and each of the training images captured by the first camera (first training images). A weighted brightness transfer function (WBTF) is determined by combining the BTFs weighted by weights of the first training images. The weights are based on the similarity measures. The first test image is transformed by the WBTF to better match one of the training images captured by the second camera. Another test image, captured by the second camera, is identified because it is closer in appearance to the transformed test image than other test images captured by the second camera. An object in the identified test image is a re-identification of the object in the first test image.

  • Patent number: 9621869
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for minimizing re-projection artifacts. From a re-projection method, a distortion map determines areas of excessive stretching or compressing of pixels, which are then rendered. The re-projection and render are composited to create a new stereo image. Systems and methods are also provided for a “depth layout” process, whereby a new offset view of a 2D plate is created, allowing a stereo pair of images. Custom geometry that approximates the scene is created and 2D rotoscoping is employed to cut out shapes from the geometry. A depth map is created, from which an offset image may be re-projected, resulting in a stereo pair. Systems and methods are also provided for a fast re-projection technique, which creates a novel view from an existing image. The process generates a disparity map and then a distortion map, which is then used to create the new view.
