Abstract: Display location calculation means and methods for calculating a display location are disclosed. It has become common for users to indicate a point on a display in order to communicate with a machine. It is therefore necessary to be able to calculate the location on the display that is being indicated by the user. A display generator (123) is arranged in operation to generate a display in response to display data generated by a machine (111). A camera operable to generate image data representing at least part of the scene within the field of view of the camera (which part, includes at least a portion of the display) is carried in a pointer device (103). Computation means (111, 113, 115) are arranged in operation to receive the image data and the display data and to calculate from these data sets the position and/or orientation of the pointer device (103) relative to the display. A display location can then be calculated from the calculated position and/or orientation.

  • Patent number: 7158119
Abstract: Relating to a track ball device for manipulating a cursor moving on a display screen of an electronic apparatus, a track ball device being manipulated precisely while generating a click feel when a ball is rotated, having a small play angle and small size is presented. Beneath the center of the ball, the ball is rotatably supported by four rollers. The section of a contacting portion of the rollers contacting with the ball is a circular sawtooth profile, and the directions of the sawtooth serrations of opposite rollers are reverse to each other. Rollers 2 to 5 have switches as rotation amount detecting units. Further, X roller and Y roller contacting with the outer circumference in the orthogonal direction as seen from above the ball, and third roller hold the ball rotatably. Plural undulations are formed on the outer circumference of large-diameter contacting portions of the X roller and Y roller 3 of circular shaft shape. Rotary encoders are coupled to individual rollers.

  • Patent number: 7158121
Abstract: An enhanced touch-screen display system is disclosed for generating pixel coordinate estimates corresponding to a location on a display screen touched by a user. The system is an analog resistive touch-screen display system having a processor and associated software algorithms to allow for the calibration and validation of pixel coordinate estimates as an integral part of the real-time generation of the pixel coordinate estimates. Multiple calibrated pixel coordinate estimates are generated and processed at a pre-defined sampling rate to determine a valid pixel position to minimize sampling delays due to settling times. The x-axis position is also validated before the system attempts to generate a y-axis position to avoid the wasted time for generating y-axis estimates when x-axis estimates are corrupted. Noisy estimates are inherently reduced in the touch-screen display system by providing shunts across certain drivers in the system that also allow for detection of a “no touch” state.

  • Patent number: 7129932
Abstract: A QWERTY-based cluster keyboard is disclosed. In the preferred embodiment, the keyboard comprises fourteen alphabet keys arranged such that all the letters in the alphabet are distributed in three rows of keys and in the standard QWERTY positions. Stochastic language models are used to reduce the error rate for typing on the keyboards. The language models consist of probability estimates of occurrences of n-grams (sequences of n consecutive words), wherein n is preferably 1, 2 or 3. A delay parameter d, which is related to the period of time the system displays the predicted intended word upon entry of a word boundary, is preferably zero to immediately display the primary word choice at a word boundary and provide the user the option to select the secondary candidate if necessary. Two disambiguation keys enable the user to identify which letter is intended as a secondary option to the language model predictions.
