Abstract: Techniques to assign nodes in a network to groups of nodes are described. The techniques include representing hosts in the network by property vectors that encode information about the hosts, identifying properties of the property vector by integers in the property vector for the host and determining proximity of hosts according to the property vectors and grouping the hosts according to the determined proximity.
Abstract: A communications network comprises two or more cell sites for communication with wireless terminals. At least one of the cell sites has multiple receive antennas. A central site has one or more interface controllers and a switch system through which the controllers are connected to the cell sites. For each controller in communication with a wireless terminal, a cell site is selected for reception of signals from the terminal, and for each selected cell site having more than one receive antenna, an antenna within the site is selected for reception from the terminal.

Abstract: A method for transmitting a character message from a mobile communication terminal with a function of transmitting the character message. Using the method, the character message can be transmitted promptly and conveniently upon failure of an originating call due to no reply of a receiver. The method comprises the steps of checking whether a preset “Send Message After Call Ending menu item” is chosen or not, as a user attempts to make a call to another mobile communication terminal, automatic ending the originating call, as the “Send Message After Call Ending menu item” is chosen, and converting the menu item into a screen for inputting a character message after ending the originating call, and performing origination of the character message according to the user's input.
Abstract: A grooming technique for managing text message traffic in mobile telephone networks, such as SMS text messages, involves directing certain text messages to a first delivery means (30) which attempts text message delivery one or more times to a destination mobile switching centre (22) or to a host (24) without passing through a store and forward function. Other text messages are directed to a second delivery means, involving a short message service centre (14), which provides a store and forward function for repeated attempted delivery of the text messages.
Abstract: In one embodiment, a content filtering system includes a feature list and a learning model. The feature list may be a subset of a dictionary that was used to train the content filtering system to identify classification (e.g., spam, phishing, porn, legitimate text messages, etc.) of text messages during a training stage. The learning model may include representative vectors, each of which represents a particular class of text messages. The learning model and the feature list may be generated in a server computer during the training stage and then subsequently provided to the mobile phone. An incoming text message in the mobile phone may be parsed for occurrences of feature words included in the feature list and then converted to an input vector. The input vector may be compared to the learning model to determine the classification of the incoming text message.
Abstract: A radio communication terminal, being used in a radio communication systems in which the transmission rate varies depending on radio wave conditions and communication statuses of other users, comprises a reception module which receives packets transmitted by a base station in an idle state of the radio communication terminal, a signal processing module which estimates a transmission rate available in communication based on the packets received by the reception module, and a display module which displays information indicating the transmission rate estimated by the signal processing module.

Abstract: An in-vehicle emergency report device starts an operation for an emergency report to transmit an emergency report signal to a service center. The operation is interrupted when a battery voltage decreases less than a given voltage. The operation is thereafter re-started when the battery voltage returns to the given voltage or more. This allows all procedures of the emergency report operation to be completed.

Furthermore, the mobile terminals each include means for providing data accountings; their contents depending on the broadcast signals received and, for example, on data relating to the signal quality of the received broadcast signals. The data acquisition system comprises a memory connected to the mobile network. The data accountings provided are transmitted from the mobile terminals by means of the mobile radio modules via the mobile network where they are stored in the memory.

Abstract: A response system and method of retrieving user responses from a plurality of users includes providing a plurality of base units and a plurality of response units, each of the response units adapted to receive a user input selection and to communicate that user input selection with at least one base unit utilizing wireless communication. Personality data is provided for the response units. The personality data facilitates communication with a particular base unit. The personality data of a particular one of the response units is changed in order to change which of the base units that response unit communicates. This allows a response unit to become grouped with a particular base unit at a particular time and become grouped with another base unit at another particular time. The personality data may be obtained from a database.

Abstract: The present invention provides a single circuit and a method which can identify the WLAN standard of a packet or the modulation type of a packet. The single circuit includes a shift register, N determinators and decision logic. The shift register is configured to receive several periods of the preamble of the packet. Each of the N determinators is configured to determine whether the WLAN standard, or the modulation type, of the packet matches one of the N WLAN standards, or the N modulation types. Decision logic is configured to decide the WLAN standard, or the modulation type, of the packet.
Abstract: SMS based alert messages are routed to subscribers via a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) such that SMS alert messages can be provided to specific cell sites. Also, SMS alert message can be provided to all subscribers registered in a specific cell site, including roamers. When an MSC receives one alert message, it routes that one message to all subscribers known to the MSC. In an example embodiment, an emergency alert message along with an indication of the alert area is received by an emergency alert server. MSCs capable of facilitating cellular coverage for the alert area are determined. Cell ID (cell sites) associated with the MSC are determined, and the alert message is routed to subscribers currently registered in the cell ID.

Abstract: A deterministic access system and method is provided that may be used for gaining access to a shared communication medium in a mesh or decentralized network. The deterministic access method enables QoS prioritization for periodic data flows such as those used in streaming media or VOIP communications without the direction of a central controller. The method provides a way for network nodes to schedule communications that take into account the hidden node problem, provide priority access to the communication medium for high QoS data flows, and provide shared access to the medium for lower priority data packets during unscheduled times. The method also enables both backward and forward compatibility with network communication methods as well as interoperability between mesh networks and conventional networks.
Abstract: In a mobile communication system, a base station controller has a handoff information management table for storing distance information for each mobile station notified from each of base stations and a detection unit for updating the handoff information management table each time a new handoff information was received from the base stations and detecting any of the mobile stations that is moving out of a service area into an out-of-communication range. The detection unit performs the out-of-range detection by selecting any of the mobile stations currently communicative only with one or more of the border cell base stations as a detection target and comparing the distance information in the handoff information management table with a predetermined threshold value.
Abstract: At least a mobile terminal 10, base station radio apparatuses 20a and 20b that communicate with the mobile terminal 10, and a radio base station control apparatus 30 that controls the transmission powers of the base station radio apparatuses 20a and 20b are at least provided. When a handover function test is performed between cells that are covered by the base station radio apparatuses 20a and 20b, the radio base station control apparatus 30 calculates a difference between the levels of the reception fields of the base station radio apparatuses 20a and 20b that cover the cells for which the handover test of the mobile terminal 10 is to be performed. Then, the radio base station control apparatus 30 controls the transmission powers of the base station radio apparatuses 20a and 20b so that the difference is equal to or smaller than a predetermined threshold value.
Abstract: A system and method for cognitive communication device operation. In accordance with the system and method, a node (102, 106, 107) that communicates in a wireless multihopping communication network (100) uses a receiver (302, 402, 502, 602) to acquire a digital sample of a communication signal, and extracts at least one feature of the digital sample. The node (102, 106, 107) employs a classifier (306, 406, 506) to determine the signal type, and a transmitter (108) to send feature vectors including information representing the signal type to other nodes (102, 106, 107) in the network (100).

Abstract: A method for controlling an idle mode in a broadband wireless access (BWA) communication system. A mobile station (MS) transmits to a base station (BS) a de-registration request (DREG-REQ) indicating a state transition request to the idle mode. The BS transmits to the MS a de-registration command (DREG-CMD) for commanding state transition to the idle mode. The MS transmits to the BS a de-registration acknowledgement (DREG-ACK) in response to the DREG-CMD.
