  • Patent number: 6286570
Abstract: The anti-splitting device of the present invention has a central-web portion and a pair of end web portions, which are joined adjacent to their midpoints to opposite ends of the central web portion to provide the device with generally I-shaped cross-sectional configurations. The web portions have first side edges tapered to define a cutting edge and second side edges serving to define a planar driven surface disposed parallel to the cutting edge. And on the central web portion are at least two projections to upstand from driven surface. The projections are adapted to removably attach the device to a driver employed to insert the device into a log. The driver of the present invention is preferably in the form of a manually operational hammer having a planar driver surface of circular plan form configuration and a circular groove that has an outer diameter equidistant and an inner diameter equidistant from a given fixed point, the center of the planar driving surface.

  • Patent number: 6279629
Abstract: The subject basic method and its modifications are used to provide logs reconstituted from smaller diameter trees up to 12 inches diameter at their bases. The basic method is practiced using the following steps: 1. Cutting felled trees at cutting points into a plurality of segments which, naturally, are tapered, each segment having a length, a larger diameter end and a smaller diameter end, the length being in a range of random lengths such that the larger end diameter is in a range of 0.2 to 2.0 inches larger than the smaller end diameter, with 0.2 inch preferred; 2. selecting from the plurality of segments cut from one or more trees, a plurality of groups of segments which have smaller end diameters no more than ½ inch different; 3. joining segments from each group end-to-end to form reconstituted logs of optimum lengths for processing into wooden structural units. In one modification of the basic method, flawed portions are removed from the logs prior to cutting them into segments.

  • Patent number: 6279445
Abstract: A self-aligning multi-tool for use in a punch press having a ram. The multi-tool includes a housing carrying a striker and a magazine bearing a plurality of circumferentially spaced tools and rotatable with respect to the housing so as to bring a single desired tool into alignment with the striker. The housing has a striking surface adapted to be engaged by the ram of a punch press and configured to rotationally lock to the ram when correctly rotationally aligned therewith to prevent the housing from rotating as the magazine is rotated. The housing is provided with at least one alignment pin having a tapered cam surface and positioned such that the ram will contact and cam against the tapered cam surface of the pin as the ram approaches the striking surface if the machine ram and the striking surface are rotationally mis-aligned so as to urge the housing to rotate into correct alignment with the ram to enable rotational locking therebetween.

  • Patent number: 6269719
Abstract: A machine for cutting damaged ends off of rolls of wound sheet material includes a saw that moves in a circular motion about the circumference of one end of the roll of material. The circular motion of the saw is coupled with a movement of the saw radially inward toward the center of the axis of the circular movement. The roll is thereby cut in ever increasing depths about its circumference. The machine is mounted on a portable hydraulic lift and controlled by a remote controller positioned a safe distance away from the saw. The machine and the roll of material can be more easily aligned through the use of an alignment track.

  • Patent number: 6267164
Abstract: A chip and method for producing wood pulp. First, second and third pairs of substantially parallel sides are formed by cleaving, cutting and cutting, respectively. The sides of the second pair of sides are cut by a first knife so as to be spaced between about 2 to 8 mm. The sides of the third pair of sides are cut by a second knife so as to be spaced a greater distance apart than the first pair. The sides of the first pair of sides are cleaved substantially along the grain direction so as to be spaced also a greater distance apart than the sides of the first pair. The sides of the third pair of sides are cut so as to be substantially perpendicular to the sides of the first pair of sides.

  • Patent number: 6267162
Abstract: A mortising tool designed to remove a specific quantity of material from a wooden object, such as a door or door jamb, to allow flush mounting of door hinge plates. The tool is comprised of a mortise forming member, a cutting device attached to the lower surface of the mortise forming member, and a longitudinal slot formed through the mortise forming member. The cutting edge of the cutting device and the slot are in alignment. Upon placing the cutting device of the mortising tool to one side of the surface of an object from which a mortise is to be formed, material removal is effected by striking the rear portion of the mortising tool and directing it across the object. Material is removed by the cutting device as the mortising tool is directed across the object, and the slot facilitates waste material removal. The mortising tool is also provided with a shoulder which extends from the lower surface of the mortise forming member for controlling the distance the mortising tool travels when forming a mortise.

  • Patent number: 6263773
Abstract: The invention is a method and apparatus for processing an Engine Wood Product member. The member is moved to a home position in a driving unit and the length of the EWP member is automatically measured by moving the EWP member from the home position while engaging the EWP member with a measuring assembly including a measuring wheel having a smooth hard facing, the facing contacting the EWP member. The member is moved to a first cutting position and cut to a predetermined length. Activating one or more position sensor devices, at least one of the position sensor devices positioned such that the EWP member engages the position sensor device while the member is in the home position, the length of the member is determined as it is moved from the home position.

  • Patent number: 6263930
Abstract: A stump grinder including a frame, a drive shaft, a gearbox, a rotatable shaft, a grinding drum, and a shroud cover. The frame extends longitudinally and supports at its free end a transversely mounted rotatable shaft upon which is mounted a grinding drum. One end of the rotatable shaft is rotatably mounted in the frame, and the other end of the rotatable shaft is rotatably connected to a gearbox. The gearbox is driven by the drive shaft which is configured for coupling to the power take off shaft of a conventional tractor. The opposite end of the frame includes a plurality of fastening means for securely fastening the frame to the tractor. The grinding drum is designed so that its upper circumference rotates away from the tractor and thus away from the operator so that any loose debris is thrust outwardly from the operator. Grinding drum power is achieved through the tractor itself. The shroud covering covers the upper portion of the grinding drum in the interests of operator safety.
