  • Patent number: 4691677
Abstract: A throttle valve control system comprises an accelerator position sensor for detecting the amount of operation of the accelerator, a throttle valve opening degree determining circuit which receives the output of the accelerator position sensor and determines the opening degree of the throttle valve, and a throttle valve driving device which drives the throttle valve to the position corresponding to the opening degree determined by the throttle valve opening degree determining circuit. The throttle valve opening degree determining circuit is arranged to determine the opening degree of the throttle valve with respect to the amount of operation of the accelerator so that the change in the opening degree of the throttle valve for a given change in the amount of operation of the accelerator is relatively small when the amount of operation of the accelerator is in an intermediate range and is relatively large when the amount of operation of the accelerator is above or below the intermediate range.

  • Patent number: 4691676
Abstract: An apparatus responsive to a change in the position of an accelerator pedal for controlling movement of a throttle valve situated within an engine induction passage. The apparatus includes a control circuit for determining a demand value corresponding to a setting of the position of the throttle valve in response to an electrical signal indicative of the position of the accelerator pedal. • Patent number: 4690103
Abstract: A viscous fan coupling unit is controlled by a bimetallic strip. The bimetallic strip is subdivided by an elongate slot into two partial strips. The partial strips are interconnected by end portions of the bimetallic strip and by a cross-piece. The cross-piece acts on a control pin of the viscous fan coupling. This bimetallic stream reacts immediately on temperature changes of the air strip passing around the bimetallic strip. By the slot internal stresses are avoided such that the bimetallic strip can provide larger deflection paths and larger control forces in response to temperature changes.

  • Patent number: 4690105
Abstract: An internal combustion engine of an automotive vehicle has a cylinder block formed with a cylinder bore, and a piston is fitted in the bore and reciprocates in it. A cylinder head is affixed to the cylinder block and defines a combustion chamber in cooperation with the piston and the cylinder bore. This cylinder head is formed with a portion which in cooperation with a portion of the piston defines a squish area of the combustion chamber, and with a coolant passage which substantially follows through the cylinder head adjacent to the squish area so as directly to cool the squish area. The coolant passage is of substantially the same cross sectional area along its extent. Thereby, the flow of coolant through the coolant passage is kept substantially uniform and at uniform speed throughout its extent, and cooling of the squish area is enhanced.

  • Patent number: 4690104
Abstract: A cylinder head for an automotive vehicle has an inner wall serving to define the roofs of combustion chambers, and an outer wall spaced outward therefrom. A coolant flow plenum is defined between the inner wall and the outer wall, and a coolant flow path is defined through the coolant flow plenum. A hole through a portion of the outer wall of the cylinder head opens to a portion of the coolant flow path which has a relatively large cross sectional area, and serves for extracting an inner casting sand core used to create the coolant flow plenum during casting of the cylinder head. A cup plug is fitted into the casting sand extraction hole so as to block it, and this cup plug projects inwards into the coolant flow plenum so as to constrict the large cross section portion of the coolant flow path and to deflect flow of coolant toward other portions of the cylinder head that require high cooling.

  • Patent number: 4677942
Abstract: In an internal combustion engine cooling system wherein the coolant is boiled and the vapor produced condensed in a radiator in a manner that the rate of condensation under light engine load is maintained at a level sufficiently low to raise the pressure within the system and thus raise the boiling point of the coolant while under heavy load increased to the point of lowering the pressure in the system and thus lower the coolant boiling point, an arrangement is provided to reduce the heat exchange capacity of the radiator when the rate of condensation therein due to uncontrollable external influences becomes excessive. When the engine is stopped, coolant is admitted to fill the system. To purge any air or like non-condensible which finds its way into the system, liquid coolant is pumped in to overfill the system and flush same out during engine warm-up.
