  • Patent number: 5127786
Abstract: A method of making a reinforced book or binder cover of polymer or paper covered panels includes feeding a planar panel such as a paperboard panel into a plurality of cutters, then cutting parallel cuts through the panel with pairs of adjacent parallel cutters and stripping the panel portions between the parallel cuts with a stripping member to form a plurality of spaced panels. A polymer hinge strip is fed onto the planar panels over each stripped away portion and is adhered thereto during the stripping step to thereby hold the separated panels in a spaced relationship to each other to form a hinge between panel sections. A polymer covering is adhered over the paperboard and over the polymer hinge strip on one side thereof to form a cover having a flexible hinge between the spaced panel sections.

  • Patent number: 5125689
Abstract: Packages for sets of promotional or other articles (such as lottery tickets or coupons) which conceal information included on the articles, and methods of forming the packages, are disclosed. Embodiments of the package include even (or odd) numbers of integrated panels of equal size, pairs of which panels are separated by fold lines. A four-panel package may be folded along the first and third fold lines so that the inner face of each panel contacts the inner face of an adjacent panel. The package then may be folded along the second fold line so that the exposed outer faces of the remotest panels contact, thereby forming a package having the length and width of a single panel. Sets of tickets or articles equal to the number of panels (or multiples thereof) may then be formed simultaneously by creating areas in the folded package completely defined by lines of weakness.

  • Patent number: 5104149
Abstract: An identity card, e.g. a check card or credit card, usually has a field in which the card user writes has signature when the card is handed over. A weakness that manipulators of the cards could exploit up to now was that the signature field could be detached and replaced by an imitated signature field. To make such manipulation easily recognizable and thus impede forgery, the invention proposes making the security print (guilloche print), that covers the surroundings of the signature field anyway, extend without interruption across the signature field as well. Whereas it is already extremely difficult to imitate a signature field provided with such a security print, it is virtually impossible to dispose the security print in such a way that is passes continuously from the signature field into the surroundings of the signature field (FIG. 1).

  • Patent number: 5098130
Abstract: This invention enables the faster processing and sorting of mail pieces and packages while also detecting pieces with insufficient postage. A postal stamp is introduced which has provisions for entering, by the stamp user, both the destination and origination identifier codes which are detectable by a scanning device. In addition, distinct markings are printed for alerting a scanning device to the location and orientation of the entered identifier codes. Furthermore, special marking code printed thereon is provided to identify the monetary value of the stamp. Two other different stamp structures are also introduced to help facilitate the stated objectives. These two other structures involve stamps of two layers with peel-off pieces. A mail sorting process and apparatus is provided which utilizes the capabilities of the introduced stamp. Finally, a spostal metering device is improved and introduced as a compatible part of this invention.

  • Patent number: 5076612
Abstract: A thin, flexible, elongate sheet is marked on one side, preferably with sets of intersection lines and has through apertures formed at selected intersections of these lines, the other side of the sheet being provided with a thin coating of a pressure responsive, readily releasable, adhesive at least immediately around the apertures. An edge portion of the sheet is defined by a line of closely spaced fine perforations along and spaced from an edge portion of the sheet, to thereby define an elongate narrow portion having the plurality of evenly spaced-apart apertures. The edge portion can be torn off at the perforations to provide an elongate ribbon-like segment of the sheet. In both aspects, the elongate ribbon-like material is lightly pressed to a wall surface to provide an easily movable and removable reference for placing a nail, screw or other object-supporting means on the wall. An extended length of the sheet is placed on a substantially horizontal work surface with the adhesive side lowermost.

  • Patent number: 5056606
Abstract: A fluid-powered hammer drill has a bore in which a tool shaft is normally coaxially engaged. A piston displaceable in the bore defines a front return chamber of small effective piston surface area and a rear drive chamber of larger effective surface area. A passage permanently connects the front chamber with the high-pressure side of a pressure source. A reversible control valve is connected between both sides of the source and the rear chamber for alternately pressurizing and depressurizing same and thereby alternately displacing the piston axial forward to strike the rear end of the tool shaft and axially backward. A recoil-damping sleeve surrounds the piston axially ahead of the front chamber and has a front end axially forwardly engageable with the tool shaft in a frontmost position and a rear end defining with the bore a recoil chamber separate from the front return chamber. The housing is formed with a vent passage connected to the low-pressure side of the source and opening into the recoil chamber.

  • Patent number: 4872517
Abstract: A non-rotating fluid conductor for use with well apparatuses. A top drive with such a conductor and methods of using such a conductor and such a top drive. The conductor in one embodiment has a tripartite gland with outer, central, and inner gland members. The central gland member is movable in response to externally applied fluid pressure to bring into communication one or more passages through the conductor which includes passages through the outer member and inner member which are brought into communication when a passage on the central member aligns with the passages of the inner and outer members. Appropriate configuration of and biasing of the central gland member provides non-contacting of the central and inner members unless the conductor is in an energized mode.
