    Abstract: Disclosed herein are embodiments of a heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) device comprising a waveguide and a near-field transducer (NFT) coupled to the waveguide. The NFT comprises a core layer comprising an insulator, a first metal layer adjacent to the core layer, and a second layer adjacent to the first metal layer, wherein the second layer comprises a material that is substantially mechanically and thermally stable and thereby functions as a hard jacket to mitigate deformation of the NFT. The first metal layer may comprise a plasmonic metal, such as gold. The second layer may comprise tungsten, chromium, or a dielectric material.

A slider includes a vertical structure and a segmented structure disposed adjacent to the base of the vertical structure. The segmented structure comprises a plurality of particle-trapping segments and at least one gap, where each pair of two consecutive particle-trapping segments is separated by a gap. When the slider ABS faces upward, each gap is at a level that is higher than the floors of the particle-trapping segments on either side of the gap. In some embodiments, the segmented structure includes at least three particle-trapping segments and at least two gaps. In some embodiments, the lengths of the particle trapping segments account for at least eighty percent of the overall length of the segmented structure.

The MTJ structure includes, in a bottom-up direction away from the substrate, a free layer, a tunnel barrier layer and a reference layer. The method additionally includes forming a pinning layer over the MTJ structure, wherein the pinning layer pins a magnetization direction of the reference layer. The method additionally includes forming capping layer comprising chromium (Cr) over the pinning layer. The method further includes annealing the capping layer under a condition sufficient to cause diffusion of Cr from the capping layer into at least the pinning layer. According to another aspect, a magnetoresistive device is formed according to the method.
