The leading shield includes a leading-edge taper (LET) that conformally abuts a tapered side of the write pole. The leading-edge shield and the leading-edge taper can be independently recessed in a proximal direction away from an air bearing surface (ABS) plane so that one or the other of them is recessed and the other remains coplanar with the ABS, or both are recessed by independent amounts. In another configuration the LS is not planar but has a recessed portion in a center track region and two surrounding regions that are coplanar with the ABS plane.

The wiring member includes a metal layer, a base insulating layer, a conductive layer, and a cover insulating layer stacked in order. The cover insulating layer includes a pad opening through which the first electrode is connected to the conductive layer with a conducive adhesive therebetween. The base insulating layer includes a first region below the first pad opening and a second region below a side surface of the piezoelectric element. A thickness of the base insulating layer in the second region is less than a thickness of the base insulating layer in the first region.

Each of the shields individually comprises a first leg disposed at and parallel to the MFS and a second leg coupled to the first leg, the second leg being recessed from the MFS. When the kind of magnetization initialization needed by the DFL read head is applied to the magnetic recording head during the manufacturing process, the second leg of each of the shields of the magnetic recording device causes the magnetization directions of the shields to individually switch to a stable state.
