  • Patent number: 5076775
Abstract: An apparatus for production of a continuous plastic sheet (2) includes structure for the forming of at least one layer cast in the liquid state of this plastic material, or a reaction mixture of reactive components, on a mobile support of glass plates (1) placed edge to edge and carried by a conveyor, followed by the setting of the layer formed on the surface of the glass plates and pulling off the set sheet. Strips (3) of flexible material are inserted between the adjacent glass plates. The adjacent edges of the glass plates are covered, before the casting is performed, by a ribbon (4) of a material nonadherent to the glass, which overlaps the section of the inserted strip or strips. After having been positioned on the glass plates, the ribbon is made temporarily adherent to the latter upstream from the casting in the liquid state by electrostatically charging with opposite charges the glass plates and the ribbon.

  • Patent number: 5071339
Abstract: A compression molding apparatus includes a rotatable supporting member and circumferentially spaced molds mounted on the rotatable supporting member. The molds are conveyed successively through a plastic material feed zone, a compression molding zone and a discharge zone by the rotation of the rotatable supporting member. A plastic material in a heat softened state is fed into the molds which are disposed within the plastic material feed zone. Each of the molds include a first mold portion and a second mold portion which defines a mold cavity. The mold is opened and closed by moving the mold portions relative to each other in a predetermined direction. A conduit hole extending from the mold cavity is formed in the second mold portion. Each mold includes a compression rod which slides in the conduit hole. The conduit hole has a plastic receiving portion opened frontwardly in the rotating direction of the rotatable supporting member.

  • Patent number: 5055022
Abstract: An extrusion device for producing an article of a heterogeneous blend of incompatible polymers, one polymer forming a matrix and the other being in a discontinuous phase within the matrix. The device is used with either side-fed or center-fed multiple parison die heads. The desired heterogeneous resin structure is formed and maintained by a unique extrusion screw and adapter configuration that avoids division of the melt stream to feed the multiple parison die head after formation of the desired resin structure. This is accomplished by a plurality of arcuate flow passages in the terminal portion of the extrustion screw directly feeding each die. The arcuate flow passages are formed by ribs that extend radially inwardly from the extruder barrel toward a flightless terminal portion of the screw shaft and tip. Circulatory resin flow in the arcuate flow passages driven by the screw rotation forms the desired laminar resin structure.

  • Patent number: 5055023
Abstract: An apparatus for manufacturing large-volume hollow bodies of plastics material with multiple-layer walls. The apparatus defines an accumulation chamber and has a nozzle outlet. A plurality of material layers are joined into a multiple-layer plastic material melt within a tubular plunger which is movable in axial direction of the apparatus. The multiple-layer plastics material melt is conducted in a flow duct which widens in the shape of a funnel toward the accumulation chamber. The tubular plunger is forced by the melt to move in axial direction away from the nozzle outlet. The material melt is ejected as a multiple-layer extruded material by moving the tubular plunger in axial direction toward the nozzle outlet.

  • Patent number: 5035509
Abstract: A plasticating apparatus having a barrel and a screw rotatably disposed therein. The screw has a mixing section including a helical conveying flight to form a helical passage for transporting resinous material along the screw. The mixing section further includes a helical, zig-zag barrier flight spaced from the conveying flight to divide the helical passage into channels of varying cyclic depth in the helical direction of the channels. The portions of minimum depth of the channels define wave crests which are helically displaced from each other. The barrier flight has a first section converging toward one side of the conveying flight, and a second segment diverging away from the same side of the conveying flight. • Patent number: 5024559
Abstract: An apparatus for forming a pellet is disclosed that includes at least one punch that is reciprocably movable through an opening in a die for compressing a granular material, such as uranium dioxide, into a pellet such as the fuel pellets used in the fuel assemblies that generate power in nuclear reactors. The punch is advantageously formed from an alloy consisting essentially of tungsten carbide having a grain size of less than one micron which is embedded in a matrix of cobalt which constitutes between 16.5 and 17.5% by weight of the alloy. The alloy is preferably hot isostatically pressed to achieve zero porosity and a density of approximately 14.0 gm/cc.sup.3. Additionally, essentially pure ingredients are preferably used to avoid interfaces in the resulting alloy which could provide situs for chipping. The resulting alloy has a Rockwell scale A hardness of 89.

  • Patent number: 5018954
Abstract: The preferred embodiment of the shielded counter-rotating spinner assembly for microparticalization of liquid consists of two opposed, coaxial, counter-rotating, conical, sharp-edged spinners whose edges are in close proximity and whose outer surfaces are in close proximity with non-rotating shields which extend to the edges of the spinners. The purpose of the shields is to greatly reduce the spinner induced air drafts so that, when liquids are applied to the inside surfaces of the spinners through the axes of the driving motors, the droplets produced on the edges of the spinners are injected into very low velocity air.
