  • Patent number: 7150329
Abstract: A system includes a drill string made up of a plurality of connectable pipe sections. An assembly is provided for use with each pipe section including contact arrangement for forming an isolated electrical connection between attached pipe sections at each end of each pipe section. An electrically conductive arrangement is located in the innermost passage of each pipe section and is in electrical communication with the contact arrangement to extend therebetween in a way which provides an electrically conductive path that is arranged against the inner wall of the innermost passage of each pipe section in cooperation with the contact arrangement to form an overall electrically isolated conductive path through the drill string. The electrically conductive arrangement resiliently biases the electrically conductive path against the inner wall, which path may take the form of a helix.

  • Patent number: 7143849
Abstract: A gripping apparatus for supporting a tubular includes a longitudinal opening extending therethrough. A bowl is formed on an inner wall of the housing to provide an incline surface for one or more gripping members. As the gripping members are move down along the incline, the incline causes the gripping members to move radially toward the tubular and contact the tubular. In one embodiment, the housing comprises two body portions coupled together using one or mores hinges. In one aspect, the bowl is formed as a recess in the inner wall of the housing. The hinges of the housing are progressively curved to accommodate the recess bowl, thereby increasing the tubular size handling capacity of the gripping apparatus. In another embodiment, the apparatus may include guide keys that mate with guide slots formed on an outer surface of the gripping members to minimize the rotational movement of the gripping members relative to the housing.

  • Patent number: 7128170
Abstract: A stabiliser (10) has a body (12) having a through-bore (16). A mandrel (14), also having a through-bore (20), is axially slidable in the body bore to actuate and de-actuate the tool. A step (64) in the body defines annular chambers (102, 104) between the mandrel and body on either side of the step. A control piston (18) in the mandrel alternately directs drilling mud pumped under pressure along said body bore and mandrel bore to the chambers to drive the mandrel hydraulically to actuate and de-actuate the tool. The control piston has a through-bore (46) and is slidable in the mandrel bore against the force of a return spring (40) by drilling mud pressure from a low-pressure position to a pressure position. The pressure position is alternately one of an actuate position (a) and a de-actuate position (b), axially spaced along the mandrel bore from said actuate position.
