  • Patent number: 7124815
Abstract: A tubing injector apparatus for use with variable diameter tubing. The apparatus comprises a pair of carriages which may be moved transversely and pivotally with respect to one another by actuating hydraulic actuator cylinders. A hydraulic control system uses relief valves to maintain a substantially constant pressure in the actuator cylinders when a tapered connector in the tubing passes between the carriages. A gripper chain in each carriage has gripper blocks to grippingly engage the tubing. A linear beam supports the gripper chain and has a plurality of resiliently biased segments therein to help maintain better contact with the tubing when the tapered connector passes through.

  • Patent number: 7124817
Abstract: A method of treating a hydrocarbon-bearing measure such as an oil-bearing rock formation (13). The method comprises: injecting water containing a source of vitamins, phosphates and an electron acceptor such as nitrate into the formation at first location (10) and allowing anaerobic bacteria, which are either already present in the formation (13) or which are introduced simultaneously to multiply using the oil as their main carbon source. This establishes a biomass layer (16) which acts to dissociate the oil from the rock formation (13). The dissociated oil is removed via an outlet (15). The vitamins are supplied by means of a controlled-release medium.

  • Patent number: 7111683
Abstract: A formation consolidation process is described which comprises injecting into an unconsolidated or poorly consolidated subterranean formation penetrated by a wellbore an aqueous pumpable system comprising an insoluble silica source (e.g., colloidal silica, silica fume or fumed silica) and a source of calcium hydroxide (e.g., aqueous solutions of calcium chloride and sodium hydroxide). The aqueous system may contain a nucleation inhibitor. The components of the aqueous system react to produce a calcium silicate hydrate gel (C-S-H gel) having cementitious properties within the pores of the formation. After the C-S-H gel sets and hardens, the consolidated formation has a high compressive strength (e.g., 500 psi (about 3.5 MPa) or more). The technique can be performed as a remedial treatment or in new completions, but it is particularly useful in workover treatments for existing wells.

  • Patent number: 7111693
Abstract: A system for monitoring the position and orientation of a downhole tool assembly having multiple beacons. In a preferred embodiment the first and second beacons are supported by the downhole tool assembly. Both beacons are adapted to transmit signals that are indicative of the orientation and position of the downhole tool assembly. A receiving assembly detects the signals transmitted from the first and second beacons. The receiving assembly transmits the detected signals to a processor that processes the signals to produce a composite of the relative positions and orientations of the receiving assembly and the downhole tool assembly. The composite of the relative positions of the receiving assembly and the downhole tool assembly are communicated to the operator using a display. The orientations of the first and second beacons are also communicated to the operator using the display.

  • Patent number: 7111676
Abstract: The preferred embodiment includes methods and apparatus for locating a member within an aperture. One preferred apparatus generally includes a housing containing at least one rotatably connected ring, and a plurality of tie members spaced evenly about the ring's perimeter. The tie members are connected to the rotating ring and the housing such that rotation of the ring pulls the tie members taut across the inside of the ring. Rotating the ring in the opposite direction returns the tie members to their initial orientation. When the tie members are taut they urge elements passing through an opening towards the center. When the apparatus is installed in a drilling rig floor, it results in a simpler and more effective pipe centering technology than currently exists allowing pipe strings to be centered in the slip bowl or power slips so that the slips are easily and securely installed about the pipe string.
