  • Patent number: 4624223
Abstract: A rocker arm and method of making same are provided. The rocker arm is of the cam-follower type and includes a metal body preferably made from a stamped metal piece and a stamped metal strip. A rounded recess is formed at one end portion of the metal piece and facing away from the metal strip to receive a lifter post having an end on which the rocker arm can pivot. The metal piece also has an additional recess at another end portion to receive an end of a valve stem and the metal strip has an intermediate convex portion facing away from the metal piece. The metal piece has a hole extending therethrough and communicating with the rounded recess, while the strip forms an oil passage communicating with the hole and extending toward the convex portion to supply lubricating fluid between the convex portion and the rounded recess. The convex portion has a shallow recess in which is received a hardened metal insert to be engaged by a cam.

  • Patent number: 4620590
Abstract: A heat exchanger having a flat tube with a plurality of fluid passageways therein, header pipes connected to opposite ends of the flat tube and inlet and outlet tubes connected to the header pipes, respectively. The inlet and outlet tubes are inserted and fitted into the corresponding ones of the header pipes and formed with axial slits in the inserted end portions. The opposite ends of the flat tube extend into header pipes through axial slits in the outer surfaces thereof and are fitted into the axial slits of the inlet and outlet tubes inserted therein. Thus, the inlet tube and the outlet tube are reliably maintained in their desired orientation. The header pipes are made of aluminum brazing sheet and, therefore, are brazed to the aluminum flat tube and the inlet and outlet aluminum tubes.

  • Patent number: 4620510
Abstract: This invention is directed to a novel camshaft for engine timing. The cam positions of the camshaft include secondary lobes in conjunction with normal primary lobes. The secondary lobes are positioned so that they precede their associated primary lobe during camshaft rotation. The secondary lobes cause an associated valve to open slightly and close completely prior to the normally expected valve opening caused by the primary lobe. This slight opening and closing creates a shock wave that aids the atomizing air and fuel mixing in the intake system prior to normal intake valve opening and enhances the scavenging of combustion gases during the exhaust cycle.

  • Patent number: 4620588
Abstract: A three fluid heat exchanger in which first and second fluids are in a normally flowing heat transfer relation, with flow of a third fluid being dependent on a changing condition of one of the first or second fluids. Tubular heat exchanger cores are comprised in a unitary body with one being perpendicular to the other for space conservation and to simplify fluid flow patterns. The described one core is in the path of flow of one of the first or second fluids and provides a flow path for the third fluid. A valve influenced by a changing condition of one of the first and second fluids controls flow of the third fluid.

  • Patent number: 4616606
Abstract: An internal combustion engine has n member of cylinders, a piston in each cylinder connected to a crankshaft (2), each piston being in phase or out of phase with the others by A.degree. or a multiple thereof (A=720/n), cams for actuating inlet and exhaust valves to each cylinder, and a cam drive mechanism (5) which rotates the cams in phased relationship with the crankshaft (2) to open the valves in sequence for a desired angle of rotation of the crankshaft. The cam drive mechanism also includes means for combining the rotational movement of the cams with a phased oscillatory movement of the camshaft (3) and cams of variable amplitude about the axis of rotation at a frequency f times the crankshaft frequency so that over the period which the valves are opened and/or their timings variable, f has the following values:f=2n when the number of cylinders n=1;f=n or n/2 when n=2;and f=n/2 when n=3 or more. The selection of the frequency of the oscillations allows all the cams to be mounted on the same camshaft.

  • Patent number: 4615306
Abstract: An engine valve timing control system using electrohydraulic valve lifters or adjusters operatively connected to a microprocessor based electronic control unit will provide real time charges in engine valve timing. As a result, engine performance will be improved over the mechanically controlled engine valves which at best are compromises between engine operating extremes. Each lifter is "homed" to the base circle of the cam through the use of check valves and high pressure pulses generated in the oil lines supplying the lifters.

  • Patent number: 4609039
Abstract: The disclosed invention relates to a counterflow type heat exchanger composed of plural heat exchange units characterized by unique inlet and outlet headers. Each header has an end face providing an opening to the header interior and a closed end face, both of which extend obliquely from the tube sheet to join at an apex and which are symmetrically arranged with respect to each other. Such a construction enables the flow of fluid passing through each heat exchange unit to be uniform across the width of the heat exchange unit.

  • Patent number: 4607684
Abstract: A plate and fin type heat exchanger in which different flowing fluids are placed in a segregated heat transfer relation and in which provision is made to deny opportunity for a leaked fluid from one flow or circuit to join or mix with fluid of another flow or circuit. A concept of vented buffer zones is used to protect against leakage through plate elements and through defined joints between plate and spacer elements. The concept allows and provides for relatively simple manifolding and for fabrication to conventional configurations using for the most part standard easily manufactured parts.
