The torque is transmitted by the intermediary of an oil cushion in a coupling between a driving and a driven element providing for a torque-dependent oil pressure in an oil circuit. The oil circuit delivers pressure on surfaces of different size of axially movable discs for primary and secondary cone pairs between which a transmission belt is running.The oil circuit leads from the primary to the secondary cone pair through a pressure reduction device which is under speed-ratio progressive control.

    Abstract: A continuously variable speed converter is provided wherein a plurality of balls are interposed between a pair of friction discs for transmitting rotation of an input shaft to an output shaft connected with a fluid pump. A speed change mechanism is arranged to tilt the rotational axis of each of the balls in each plane, including the axis of the input shaft, to thereby change the output/input speed ratio. Disposed within a main housing carrying the input and output shafts is the fluid pump, which also serves as a pressuring means responsive to fluid delivered by itself so as to apply to the output shaft a thrust force corresponding to the pressure of the fluid, so that efficient power transmission without slippage may be provided between the friction discs and the balls.

    Abstract: The disclosed friction disc transmission includes a conventional drive disc rotatable about a vertical shaft and a vertical friction disc engaging the top horizontal face of the drive disc to be driven about a horizontal axis. The friction disc is rotatably supported on a pivot frame having a sprocket drive connected to a sprocket on the wheel axle. The vertical drive disc shaft is mounted on a transversely swingable support for movement of the drive disc relative to the driven friction disc and control of the rotational speed and direction of the driven disc. The support includes a control plate having camming surfaces which lift the driven disc over the center neutral axis of the drive disc, reducing wear of the driven disc when the transmission is in neutral. The control also includes a clutch-brake mechanism independent of the control plate including a lever connected to a rotatable link means.

    Abstract: The disclosed friction disc transmission includes a conventional drive disc rotatable about a vertical axis and a vertical friction disc engaging the top horizontal face of the drive disc to be driven about a horizontal axis. The friction disc is rotatably supported on a pivot frame having a sprocket drive connected to a sprocket on the wheel axle. The wheel axle sprocket in the self-energizing transmission is located vertically below the drive sprocket and the drive sprocket is located between the frame pivot axis and the friction disc. The tension in the drive chain thereby compresses the friction disc into engagement with the drive disc in proportion to the torsion in the wheel axle and eliminates the requirement of a spring. Other improvements include the novel chain drive including a driven sprocket on the pivot frame.

    Abstract: An endless power transmission belt, method of making same, and drive system using same are provided wherein such belt has a portion which has a plurality of spaced belt elements defined by alternating projections and recesses and a triaxial fabric bonded against the elements which defines an abrasion-resistant exposed surface of the elements with the triaxial fabric also minimizing shearing stresses in each element due to the isotropic character of such fabric which provides improved load distribution therethrough as well as improved tear resistance thereof. The belt may have elements in the form of load-transmitting teeth with the triaxial fabric having three sets of yarn courses in which one of the three sets is substantially protected by the two other yarn sets and the one yarn set provides reinforcement of the teeth after substantial wear of the two other yarn sets resulting in an increased service life for the belt.

    Abstract: A drive unit for varying the transmission ratio between two parallel rotatable shafts is provided with a disk mounted on each shaft for rotation therewith, the disks being formed with a plurality of radial grooves in which respective bearings are provided. Each bearing is provided with a wheel, at least one of which on each disk is engaged by an endless chain, the bearing being radially displaceable in the grooves by a nut provided in each bearing which is limitedly radially displaceable relative thereto and is in engagement with a rotatable radial screw provided in each groove for displacing the nut. Between the nut and the bearing there are provided respectively a compression spring and cam means for enabling the nut to be displaced by the rotating screw when the respective wheel of the respective bearing is engaged by the chain without the bearing being displaced, the bearing being displaced upon disengagement from the chain.

    Abstract: A demountable rear-wheel axle of a bicycle, carrying a set of sprockets of progressively decreasing diameters, is detachably held in a forked frame member next to a generally crescent-shaped stationary supporting element secured to that frame member, the supporting element having an arcuate edge generally paralleling about half the periphery of the adjoining smallest diameter sprocket. A guide bracket movable generally parallel to the wheel axle, engaging the driving chain of the bicycle, can be aligned not only with the several sprockets but also with the stationary supporting element to let the chain embrace that element when it is desired to remove the rear wheel; the movement of the guide bracket is controlled by a hand lever which normally is blocked by a releasable latch from aligning that bracket with the supporting element.

    Abstract: A burner for liquid fuel in which a pressure atomizer jet is located concentrically in an air supply pipe. A potlike body is located between the discharge opening of the air supply pipe and the discharge opening of the burner jet. The body or member is opened towards the combustion chamber, and has a shell having radial openings and extending to the discharge opening of the air supply type for closing it. The potlike member has a bottom constructed as a baffle plate with a center opening and radial slots emanating from it. Upstream of this baffle plate, there is located another potlike member which encloses a space containing the atomizer jet and the ignition electrodes. The bottom of the other potlike member is penetrated by a pipe whose discharge opening is downstream of the ignition electrodes between them. The diameter of the rim of the other potlike member is smaller than the diameter measured by the outer ends of the radial slots and is larger than the diameter of the center opening of the baffle plate.

    Abstract: In a friction type transmission two substantially rigid members are in frictional engagement at respective contact portions to provide a longitudinally extending contact zone therebetween. In some such transmissions the relative velocities of the members at a first end of the contact zone are different than at a second end thereof. This creates slippage problems. To solve these problems a plurality of generally parallel plates are aligned in a pack and are arranged whereby an edge of the aligned plates forms the aforementioned contact portion of at least one of the inelastic members. Slippage is thereby prevented.
