Patent number: 4036521Abstract: A cover assembly for covering the open bed of a pickup truck, which can be easily installed and which can be compactly and safely stored on the truck when not in use. The assembly includes a pair of flexible sheet cover sections with inner edges that can be zipped together and outer edges held to elongated levers which are hinged on mounts at the sides of the truck, so that when the levers are pivoted down the flexible cover sections are pulled taut. The outer edge of each cover section is wrapped about a long mount rod, and the rod and cover portion wrapped thereabout are held in a recess of the lever to substantially eliminate localized stress concentrations in the tightened cover section. The mount devices for mounting each lever on a truck side includes a block of rubber which fits closely through a stake hole in the truck, a bolt extending through the rubber block, and a nut which can be tightened to squeeze the block so that it expands sidewardly to become trapped in place.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1974Date of Patent: July 19, 1977Inventor: Alain Jean-Marie Clenet

Patent number: 4018475Abstract: A door system for motor vehicles is designed to prevent jamming of the door in the event of a collision. The end of the door that retains the door lock is constructed so that an opening or slit is formed between it and the neighboring door pillar. This opening (in top view) runs diagonally to the plane of the door and ends near the outer surface of the door in an offset in the pillar and a flange in the outer surface of the door. A portion of the flange perpendicular to the outer door plate faces an outer region of the door pillar offset with a clearance. This clearance is always made wider than the diagonal opening in order to prevent jamming of the door during a longitudinal impact on the vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 1975Date of Patent: April 19, 1977Assignee: Volkswagenwerk AktiengesellschaftInventor: Heinrich Richtermeier

Patent number: 4007958Abstract: A motor vehicle has a cab that has forward observation windows in the front wall on opposite sides of the main frame below the windshield, and an access door at one side with cab side windows in the door and on the opposite side. A pivoted, outwardly opening window structure may be used in either location. The window structure has a lock to secure it in any desired position between a sealed closed position and a fully open position. The lock operates by clamping onto a hinge pin, and is readily manually manipulated from inside the cab. As used on a forward observation window, the pivot axis is so located that opening the window does not interfere with a windshield wiper arm and blade for the window that occupies a generally upright parked position near the main frame.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 1975Date of Patent: February 15, 1977Assignee: Caterpillar Tractor Co.Inventors: Gary S. Patent number: 4006931Abstract: This disclosure relates to a device for reducing the wind resistance of a vehicle having a rearward body portion of greater height than a forward body portion such as a tractor-trailer rig. A false roof of generally inverted U-shape is positioned on top of the roof of the forward body portion to form an air-flow channel. An adjustable vane is positioned at the rear of the channel to direct air flowing through the channel upwardly and over the roof of the rearward body portion. The inclination of the vane is adjustable in order to accommodate rear body portions of differing height. An air conditioning unit may be positioned within the air flow channel of the false roof.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 1974Date of Patent: February 8, 1977Assignee: Ford Motor CompanyInventor: Donald W.
